Capilano University gets new film centre

METRO VANCOUVER — Capilano University will have a new film centre for its School of Motion Picture Arts, with $30.2 million coming from two governments to fund Phase 1, it was announced Thursday.

The 6,400-square-metre centre, jointly funded by the federal and provincial governments, will provide construction employment for up to 192 people, and will cater to 400 students annually.

The film centre project is part of the federal government's Industry Canada Knowledge Infrastructure program, a two-year, $2-billion commitment to expand or renovate educational and research facilities at post-secondary institutions, providing up to 50 per cent of the cost of the expansions. The program has thus far funded 11 projects in the province to the tune of $64.3 million.

It also falls under the province's three-year, $14-billion capital infrastructure program to create jobs and build public infrastructure in all parts of British Columbia.

The university's School of Motion Picture Arts has doubled its program slate over the past three years, outgrowing the wood-structure portable building that has been on campus for more than 30 years.

Greg Lee, president and vice-chancellor of Capilano University, said the centre would contain classrooms, studios, film laboratories and purpose-built rooms, and will eventually house both the motion picture arts and animation departments. The government funds will go toward building Phase 1 of the centre, and Lee hopes private sources will fund a second phase that will allow the film department to expand further.

"Phase 1 will be complete and usable, but we'd like to do even more," said Lee. "The film program has gone from zero to more than 300 students in 10 years, and we still have lots of applicants for spaces."

In a press release announcing the centre, Jane Thornthwaite, MLA for North Vancouver-Seymour, stated, "Capilano University and the film industry are among the central components of the North Shore's economy." North Vancouver is home to North Shore Studios, which has eight sound stages and offices for film companies.

"The film industry is a big player here," said Lee. "A lot of small businesses get a lot of work from the film industry."

Design work and architectural drawings for the centre will begin immediately, and the university hopes the centre will be ready by spring 2011.
