Also, an interesting little side-note: When I was looking at that picture you took of Fanshawe College, the Balloon seems to be VERY high up in the air. When I started thinking about it while looking at the photo, I gave myself vertigo sitting here in my office chair! Quite the experience!

We were about 6500 above sea level, or about 5600 feet above London. We had to climb high because the surface winds were about 5mph, and we wanted to clear the city to land.

Were you in that Libro balloon taking off from near Oxford and Wonderland? I was on Oxford in the early evening and saw it taking off.

That would be the other balloon. I am usually in the BX93/Q97.5 balloon, we took off about 10 minutes earlier. But we usually take off at that location (Fleetway)

been gone for 6 months..yet i can pick out every single shot in a heartbeat..only one that got me for a minute was commissioners road looking east through wharncliffe & wellington.

Next time...can you go over the hunt club neighbourhood/oakridge..towards kilworth and komoka and stuff?

Go Leafs Go -- I could, but in a hot air balloon, you're restricted to directions (that of the wind). Where ever the wind goes, you go. And the fact that I only fly when there is room available. I am a crew member, so most of the time I have to work. But next time we fly north, I will be sure to take pictures of the hunt club.

Also, if you want pictures of your house, I will try to fly over as close as I can. You can PM the location, and I'll try my best to take photos of it. My photos are free, this is just for fun, so send em away!

Those are the best aerial shots I've seen of London's suburbs, ever.

Hopefully you can get some closer shots of Byron on another trip, if the wind blows that way. I know we do get some balloons in this neighbourhood in the summer.

I am also working on a final "thesis" like project- like ILP - for my program at Fanshawe College. I was wondering if you have any more or could take any more pictures of the Oxford and Wonderland intersection particularly between the tracks to the south and beaverbrook to the north.

^I did have a camera (of course) but with no binoculars. But yes, I was in the BX93 balloon. If you see the balloon again this morning, I will be flying again!!

I posted this in The Renaissance Construction thread too. This is not the full update, I still have many more pictures to come. And I tried my best to take pictures of the requested area's. Like I said, much, much more pictures, just because I am going for another flight this morning.

As I was taking pictures of the London Art Museum, it got me to wonder, "Where the heck is The Renaissance?!" As I kept on looking, right out of the corner of my eye, I notice this white object, and then it got me thinking "OH **** THERE IT IS!" Let me tell you, it pretty fun flying over The Renaissance, with only about 50-100 feet to spare. The first picture, I could not get the whole top because we were hauling about 25 mph, and it was a last second take, as it surprised me!

Just as an aside, I really have to comment after seeing this photo.

The Harriston, a building that I had a lot of hopes for, has really turned out to look TERRIBLE. I mean, it looks like a giant concrete pin cushion from all the shots I have seen of it. It just looks... unfinished or something.

In contrast, the Rennaissance, even though it still leaves a lot to be desired, looks like a palace in comparison.

Too bad, really. The ground floors of The Harriston were done very well, but those balconies and the colours are just terrible. Too bad.

How the heck does one land one of these things (hot air balloon) with any precision? Is there a dispatch truck or something that collects the deflated balloon?

The procedure goes like this:

- Meet with passengers at Fleetway.
- Inflate the balloon on its side with cold air (using fans, like the one's Firefighters use to get smoke out of the building).
- Hot air inflation using burners (propane is used as fuel).
- When the hot air is put into the balloon, it replaces the cold air and the hot air rises from the side to the top, making the whole balloon and basket tilt and then it is in its usual position.
- Passengers then enter each of the compartments via foot holes on each side of the balloon.
- After enough hot air is put into the balloon to lift the 1 ton balloon, she begins to rise, and passengers will feel absolutely nothing as they fly over London at a height of around 2000 feet. Your ears pop and you can hear dogs barking from down below.
- After the balloon takes off, us ground crew clean up and get ready to chase the balloon to it's destination.
- Now since the balloon has no steerage (except for side vents that open, to turn the balloon, a vent on the top to make the balloon descend, and of course hot air to make the balloon ascend) the balloon's only momentum is movement by wind.
- As balloon crew we have to follow the balloon across the city to the country-side where the pilot doesn't know until the final 20 minutes of the flight on where he wants to head to and land. Sometimes pilots will make the decision, but mother nature wants to make her own decision, and the pilot won't know where he wants to land until he actually gets there. This could be because of wind change.
- As balloon crew, we follow the balloon to his desired landing spot, and ask for permission with each landowner we come across. We usually land in hay or grass or anywhere it cannot damage or hurt anything.
- Sometimes the wind could be difficult and we would have to land in the city like a soccer field or even someone's back yard, like always we would still ask for permission (excluding City Owned Land).
- Once landed, we would assist on putting the balloon back into the trailer (the envelop [balloon part] can fit into a bag about 7ft by 3ft and the basket and balloon bag into the back of a trailer).
- We then take everyone back to the same field we took off from and from there, they are on their own.


Here are some random stats:

The balloon I usually crew with says BX93 (red, white, and blue) and on the other side it says and EZ Rock Q97.5 (purple, aqua, and white)

The balloon itself with full air is 310, 000 cubic square feet.

The basket can carry 15 passengers and 1 pilot max; but we tend to carry only 12 passengers and 1 pilot to increase the life span of the balloon.

We have 3 crew working on the balloon.

We take off at Fleetway (Oxford and Proudfoot, East of Wonderland)

The season starts on the second week of May and continues on to the last week October.

There are two flights a day (depending on the weather [high winds, no winds, rain, too hot])

We fly at Dawn and Dusk (because of thermals, it permits us to fly in the day [Winter we can fly anytime during the day])

And a friend of mine is doing a graduate thesis on the residential morphology of London, so pics of subdivisions would be good. He's mostly looking for differences in house size, density, and whatnot so a top-down photo would be best rather than on an angle.

All your projects are correct but Hale/Trafalgar. That one's done but I'd love to see some pics from the completed structure! The Wonderland Widening would be cool to see to as I haven't been that way since the route was under construction.

Also I'd love to go up in a balloon sometime this summer. Is it too late to book it? Not sure how these things are done.

And another video of people on their balconies as we fly over. These apartment buildings are the ones behind Loblaws on Southdale and Wonderland. Just passed the second building is a small pond and a shrub field, where we ended up landing.

haljackey - Yeah we flew right over the Westmount area. As you can see we came from Fleetway (where we always take-off from) and headed South, flew directly over Westmount Lions Park and Jesse Davidson Park. And I live right down the street too:notacrook:
