Our SSP thread... makes things easy when we are surfing the site.

Anybody is welcome to post, but personal attacks aren't cool. Please display evidence for any point you are trying to make.

Pro: Such a massive investment in downtown Halifax could also serve as a catalyst for more development and could give some of the current proposals new life.

Not to sound too obvious but there's the actual core reason I presume they're building it...

Pro: To have the facility space to support and attract larger conventions in and to Halifax (and the spinoff commerce they would drive).

Pros:

Good mixed-use development, will bring people downtown to live, work, visit, shop, convene?

Like an updated version of Scotia Square; one of the biggest criticisms of S2 is its lack of interaction with the street (on pretty much every side) but Nova Centre seems to have a ton of street-level features

I also find it interesting that many of the larger office buildings including Nova Centre, NSP and Internation Place use blue glass, complimenting Purdy's Wharf and 1801 Hollis... Halifax is going to be blue the way that Vancouver is green

Cons:

Makes the WTCC obsolete... what's gonna happen with that?

Potential traffic issues associated with the new pedestrian section of Grafton Street... Granville Mall works because it's at the end of the street, but this is right in the middle of Grafton

Good points.

Does anybody know what will happen to the current WTCC if this development happens?

I heard office space.

That would make the most sense, since it's an office building.

Plans are moving along for the HDC now. We are hoping to get the group online this summer and we could do with some help;

We are still looking for potential memebers to join the coalition. If you are interested in the group private message me (Bedford_DJ) for more information.

We are also looking for ways to raise some captial for the group to get online and start working. If you are interested in either donating or have some ideas of ways to get capital also please contact me (Bedford_DJ) and I will forward the ideas onto the others behind this project.

We have a facebook group now: Halifax Development Coalition (HDC). Please visit us and provide any thoughts or ideas you might have.

:)

Hey Guys,

The HDC is looking for a logo design and this is your chance to get involved!

We are looking for logo that really brands the group and allows us to be visually recognizable.

There is no official prize aside from the recognition you will receive for designing the logo.

Feel free to post below or PM me for e-mail details.

May the best logo win!

Regards,

Worldly

I can make changes or come up with variations if you're interested.

So far this one would be my pick.

One idea I have is instead of a sailboat a drawing of the Town Clock (or another downtown icon) could be incorporated.

Thanks guys! :)

Guess that year of graphic design kinda paid off :notacrook:

If there are any small tweaks to it you'd like to see done, I can do it no problem... I just did this up really quick in Illustrator the other night so I wouldn't forget my idea lol.:haha:

Here are a couple more refined ideas for the logo, I've done a few more little changes for a few other designs, but I think so far I enjoy the one with the text below the logo. But that's just me haha, what does everyone else think?

^I like the one with the text on the top left corner (the last one). :)

It just seems like its made to fit that spot perfectly.

That was my suggestion... lets see what people think, the version with text underneath also looks good.

haha, I like em both a lot, but just remember ~talks like a graphic designer~ you'll have to think how it'll look at all sizes, from on a business card for example, to a billboard (hopefully some day ha)

If that logo has to be shrunk down, the text in the corner might be too small to read... well, I suppose I could come up with a card design if we needed it.. lol..

Anyway, I'm rambling... I'll shut up and let you all decide :haha: :haha:

Yep, I'd come up with a version that has the image scaled down the size of the text. That way the text will be readable if the logo ever has to be shrunk or placed alongside other logos. Right now the graphic elements are taking up about 70-90% of your bounding area depending on the version. Obviously this won't be a text-based logo with minimal graphics, but the idea is for the text to not be overpowered by the graphic.

Of course, it may be useful to have both; a 'stacked' version(above) and a horizontal version (with the image scaled to the text size).

Are you doing this in illustrator? You could add some subtle blues, greys and greens to reflect the colouring of purdy's and the town clock. It would be good to have a colour version too.

Anyway now I'm rambling. Those are just a few thoughts.

Overall I like the concept. Here's my two cents.

I think the thin lines that define the corner of the right hand side building could be removed, they might become muddled or disappear when the image is reduced in size, and I think the buildings are recognizable enough that the image would be understood. I also think it's important to have consistent line weights throughout, that way they aren't "fighting" with eachother. The clock tower looks good, maybe remove the tiny swoosh from the top (below the ball)? Also, the size of the type should relate more closely with the size of the image (or vice versa). Perhaps try laying out the type first, and then look for those places that the image part of the logo would fit well. I find when designing logos that looking at other logos is a great help. Try scoping out www.logodesignlove.com.
I think the concept is great! Keep up the good work!

I'm sure some people have already figured this out but just in case;

Due to some personal matters some people interested in the HDC have pulled out which leaves me and maybe one or two others. Due to school coming up though (and my age doesnt help much) I won't be able to go any further with the HDC for the coming months. I am still hopeful to get the group up and running at some point in the future.

If anybody has the time and dedication to getting the group up and running I will gladly explain what has been done so far and will help out in anyway possible. Just private message or email me if you have any questions or are willing to help ...
