I'm proposing a sticky here of a ongoing thread of any Calgary pictures. Any good pics you've taken or found just post them here! Much like the Vancouver one, which is great to browse

Basically any Calgary photos except construction updates

I'll start with a couple of my own.

Just bought a new camera, myself (well, have to go pick it up at Bestbuy tomorrow or so)

Any of you experts want to go for a walkabout to show me how to use it? (yeah, I have no idea!)

I bought a Canon Rebel T1i. Do you guys use tripods when you take these?

Vascilli
May 18, 2009, 7:54 AM
Tripods are best used for long exposures, awkward camera placement, when you want to very precisely align your camera, or when you want to keep movement to a minimum (Macro comes to mind). Your lens will probably be a Canon 18-55mm IS, and the Image Stabilization in it will fairly well negate the need for a tripod in some cases.

First thing you should do with your camera is not use it in Auto mode. (The green box)

Yep, it just barely continues past for a block of small industrial/office buildings (nothing different then most of the rest of 10th ave on the east side) then it ends just before the pathway running from up by the Golf course comes down to the river

Time to go and get some sweet Beltline shots and represent! I'm thinking a shot on the south side of 17th avenue, looking northwest with plenty of pedestrians and Montana rising in the background. Really showing how Beltline is the MOST dynamic and exciting community in the city.

With all the growth in the city, I'm wondering if people have "then and now" pictures locations in the city to share. Here's my contribution:

Calgary 2002 from my room with a view

Calgary today (I will try to get better images as the Bow goes up)

My neighbors just chopped down the tree that was obscuring my view of the belt line, so now I can get decent panos again:banana:

More pics of Lilac Fest 2009 by Jimby and myself. Huge crowd and perfect weather--a mix of sun and cloud--not too hot, not too cold.

I have a whole series of then and now pics on my flickr that I did in Calgary with my own 'then' pictures, many of Stampede Park. I could now add a third to those ones! Maybe I'll get around to posting some on here and some other pics that look dated. Next time I'm back in the city I'd like to re-shoot some sites that have seen big changes since I took the pictures in the first place.

I started out in light drizzle and ended up in not half bad sun - not bad for a Saturday where it had snowed 1/2 hour previous to my photo tour.

Jamieson Place
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3332/3601926315_3118f4c389_b.jpg

SLR with a good lens would have had less/no darkening on the right fringe, called vignetting in the top right - probably not as blown out on the left of the building.

A different view, from between the Sheraton hotel towers

From Princess Island, using about 120mm zoom. Grey and boring sky, tried to offset with trees, Eau Claire bright red roof.

Interlude - some various images in the area

What I consider to be three of the ugliest buildings in the downtown core - especially 5th & 5th in the back tallest. Ugh.

Eau Claire reflected in Jamieson. This had a post process for autolevels that totally turned this shot into a winner. It wasn't really that bright or contrasty to start with.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3316/3602733302_afdacb50c7_b.jpg

"Corners" with Jamieson as the new entry... I need a wider wide angle for this shot. But at 28mm (35mm SLR equivalent), I can at least get something with my little camera - compared to a standard 35mm "wide", would've been almost nothing. In digital SLR terms, 28mm > 17mm due to the magnification you get from a digital sensor.

Centennial Place

Reflections off of
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3363/3602732308_21810108cf_b.jpg

Centennial outside elevator. Good example of the limits of a little camera with a little lens. There is all sorts of haloing around the top of the building (light bleed from the very bright to the dark areas, reducing sharpness and contrast)
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2460/3602730310_0a9dda2979_b.jpg

Centennial Crane. Looking for nice color contrasts, patterns, and not too much light differential to minimize haloing
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3651/3601917205_bd27c303e3_b.jpg

Centennial +15. Huge blowout shooting into bright light at the top of the picture. Lesser effect on a better camera lens
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3641/3602728866_0024ebbb3e_b.jpg

 I don't know what it is about that island - I always see "Princess" even though I know better. I blame it on trying to concentrate too hard spelling "Eau Claire" correctly :)

You're not alone on the "Princess Island"; I see realtors do that all the time for some reason...

but also, the condo tower east of Eau Claire is called "Waterfront," not "Eau Claire."

Having said that, thanks for the beautiful post and the notes about photography. We have a lot to learn.
