What did they get, a 9th grade kid to do their graphics designs? those are some of the worst renderings I have ever seen.

This looks like one of those rare cases where the building will turn out better than the renders.

I still find it quite odd that VANOC would put the training venue all the way out in Surrey....and that this is Surrey's excuse for declaring itself an Olympic Venue City.
http://content.ytmnd.com/content/c/5/7/c574a4b6c473230d0beb65777b7ba6f3.jpg

Foreigner: Surrey's an Olympic venue city? What is it hosting???

Local: It's a volunteer training centre.

Foreigner: .......

Nevertheless, it'll be a great legacy for Surrey.

Looks good. My guess is that the wall with the small windows is meant to be added onto in the future.

Why is the Olympic Training Venue all the way out in Surrey?!

cause Surrey is paying for it and its along the skytrain so easy to get to

Looks good. My guess is that the wall with the small windows is meant to be added onto in the future.

What wall you talking about?
cause from what i see it looks like what is going up right now

i.e. expanded in 5 or 10 years.... when the community centre (?) / whatever use needs more space.

I think we were just saying that choosing Surrey is a bit far and
the rendering is not professional enough....

Want me to quote it for you?

I think we were just saying that choosing Surrey is a bit far and
the rendering is not professional enough....

Want me to quote it for you?

Well it's not a sports "training" venue per say. It's where all the Olympic volunteers from South of the Fraser and the Valley will be coached and stationed. Its actual name is the Games Preparation Centre, I believe.

The City payed the full cost to build this place, basically from an off-the-cuff last minute decision by the Mayor. It's already several months behind schedule. Basically just an opportunity for the City to get some limelight while the world has its eye on the region.

The rendering is fine with me. I don't know what expectations you have from a computer model...

Whalleyboy
Mar 26, 2009, 8:14 AM
i'm with you on the rendering looks good

some people just can't settle with a rendering they want and all out perfect realistic one....geeze it could have just been a drawing

metroXpress
Mar 26, 2009, 9:07 PM
^ I wasn't the one complaining about the renderings if you read back a few posts. Perhaps the they just don't want to spend that much money on getting the rendering realistic enough.

Looking good. And I don't have an issue with Surrey using the term Venue City so much. I do agree it can be a bit misleading since people associate the word Venue with a location where actual sports events happen but the realities of Olympics are that it isn't restricted just to that. Let's be real, Olympics are as much about the thousands of volunteers that keep things running as it is about the athletes who compete and couldn't without those volunteers.

Most of the volunteers are giving up free time and in many cases, wages from work, to help make the Olympics as smooth as possible and to give the entire region and the two cities with the names in the title (Vancouver and Whistler) a giant spot light, so don't sell them as being just an after-thought or insignificant to the Olympic machine. What does everyone still talk about from Beijing? The opening and closing ceremonies. Guess who was responsible for 99% of both? Volunteers.

So it is a large part of the overall Olympic experience. I do understand where some people are coming from but if Surrey is putting up all the cash, I don't see why they can't take some credit. A venue is a venue and I doubt people would say the Justice Institute which trains Police is less important than where the Police are stationed when they are done with training. They are both quite important.

The Games Preparation Centre, aka the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre, is coming together slowly. However, the meeting rooms required for VANOC use appear to be open now. The entire building was initially expected to be completed this fall, although it is not known whether that timeline has since changed. Continue on for more photos.

Looking at all the renders and construction shots, I still can't help but feel like the entry seems uninvitingly awkward... like an ice cube, fallen off the edge of a fork. The purpose of the building is great - just don't ask me to like the look of it :(

I say, either get rid of the glass cube walls or give that part a solid, non-glass roof.. but then I'm not the architect/planner ;)

According to an article in the Surrey Now (http://www2.canada.com/surreynow/news/story.html?id=be00f0a4-9d28-4fc6-b2ec-9e4d4f542ece), the Chuck Bailey Rec Centre (aka: the Surrey Games Preparation Centre) is nearly complete construction. It is scheduled to open in November.

Meanwhile, the old Tom Binnie Community Centre next door has been gutted and will be demolished in the coming weeks.

Here’s so more pictures of the Chuck Bailey Rec Centre and it’s signature “glass cube” entrance.

Totally agree. University Drive is one of the nicest roads in the City. There's relatively wide, by Surrey standards, sidewalks with great lush trees up and down. It makes walking behind Central City bearable. I particularly enjoy the section between 105A Ave and 108 Ave.

I would certainly hope so. Or else that's a rather LARGE oversight :haha:

The idea behind the Youth Park came from a proposal for an indoor skate park by some teens a couple years back. The rooftop covered area I believe is the skateboarding section, though I'm not sure why it's fenced in (fugly!)
