GM Place could be behind picket lines

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Hockey fans heading to the Canucks game at GM Place on Friday night might have to cross a picket line as unionized concession workers have issued strike notice.

The 700 workers with Local 40 serve hot dogs, pizza and beer at the arena and can legally go on strike as early as tomorrow.

Canucks Sports and Entertainment has vowed to keep events going even if the concession workers decide to set up pickets for Friday’s game against the LA Kings.

The union is asking for higher wages, better benefits and job security during the 2010 Games. Security and cleaning staff say they will remain on the job in the event of a strike.

This spring, GM Place is scheduled to host eight regular-season hockey games, along with the Juno Awards, the Canucks for Kids telethon and several concerts, including Fleetwood Mac and Beyoncé Knowles.
