Looks like the Hospital district around Summer Street is about to get another new building:

N.S. pledges $32 million to new science centre at Dalhousie

A $32-million commitment to a new BioScience Enterprise Centre at Dalhousie University was announced Tuesday by Premier Rodney MacDonald.

The new bioscience centre will open for business in the Spring of 2011, and will be built beside the new Life Sciences Research Institute slated to open around the same time next to the Sir Charles Tupper medical building on the corner of College and Summer streets.

“Life sciences is one of the fastest-growing sectors in our region’s economy,” the premier said at a hastily assembled announcement ceremony at the university attended by leaders in the region’s academic and research communities.

The premier said the sector continues to offer tremendous potential to create employment and attract investment and also to improve the quality of health care and life of the province.

The premier said the cash commitment will be made through InNOVAcorp over 20 years.

The planned facility will replace the existing centre on Lower Water Street on the Halifax waterfront and eventually open that site up for redevelopment, the premier said.

If I'm not mistaken the BioSciences building on Lower Water is part of the Queen's Landing redevelopment so once this gets completed some more work might go ahead on that project.

Does this mean Queenslanding might actually happen? I've been waiting to hear anything on that development. It was proposed in 2005, yet nothing has happened.

Well, it is great news if it is to be built at College and Summer because it will mean less surface parking lots in that area, epecially with the other building going up next door. Combine this with the Sacred Heart development on SGR and there will be signficant building density in the area. This is great news.

I haven't seen anything about Queen's Landing, but I guess moving the BioScience centre is a prerequisite for it getting off of the ground.

This project on its own is pretty good news. Queen's Landing will be great if it gets off the ground.

I found a picture of a rendering for the block once completed. All the description says is that it shows the LSRC and immediately beside it the BioSciences Building. I believe the taller building in the background would be the Tupper Building

Yeah, the red part looks to be the second half.

Here's a slightly clearer rendering from today's Herald:

It looks like the new building will be added on to the "back" of the Life Science Research Centre

Noticed today that there is now a construction crane up on this site.

Wow so that makes two cranes up in town? I'm now wishing that I didn't choose to go to school out here.

Are you sure this isn't the Coburg Rd. site with the crane? I drove by the Bio Science site tonight and I didn't see a crane, although I would imagine it will be up within the next two months.

Yes thats the one.

I'm confused is there two threads for the same building. There is a thread "Life Sciences Research Centre | ~20 m | 5 fl | U/C". I thought that one was the one next to the Tupper building and this one was the one on Coburg.

Oh I see the Coburg tower Renos is the one I was talking about. I think the name Renos is a bit miss leading. I thought it was referring to an existing tower that was being renovated.

Yeah, I think that thread started when the fate of the Church/Building was still unknown. Either way I'm sure this site will have a crane in the weeks to come. I imagine it will be just one crane, because the site isn't huge, so one crane with a long boom could handle it.
