The last few films in the great outdoors

The tricky thing about holding outdoor movie screenings in Vancouver is the weather. And toads.
The August 20th LUNAFliks screening at Lost Lake in Whistler had to be cancelled due to the annual migration of Western toads from wetland areas to the lake. I don't think viewers would want to find frog legs in their popcorn.
This week's LUNAFliks event also had to be cancelled due to rain.
However, there is one last LUNA outdoor screening scheduled as a drive-in on Friday, September 5 at Blackcomb's Base 2 that will get everyone into back-to-school mode. It's an '80s extravaganza with Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?
Gates open at 7 p.m. Should it rain, the screening will be cancelled. Check the event hotline is 604-966-4800.
But if you want to stay in the city, there's the Gastown Drive-In series presented by Urban Republic arts society and Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society. As a celebration of B.C. films, there'll be three movies shown on the roof level of the EasyPark parkade in Gastown.
The theme is Vancouver starring as itself (rather than serving as other cities in American productions).
There'll be Hard Core Logo (Sept. 3), Fetching Cody (Sept. 10), and Eve and the Fire Horse (Sept. 17). Cars are $6 each.
To cap off the series, Cineworks is presenting a Thought on Film discussion about how Vancouver is represented on film. It's on Monday, September 30 at 6 p.m. at Cineworks (300–1131 Howe St., back lane entrance). Think of all the movies Vancouver has been in—Juno, Fantastic Four, Things We Lost in the Fire, and so many more. The list is extensive. There'll certainly be a lot to talk about
