By the way, that rendering is highly unlikely to be real. Someone just photoshoped this building on the left to make it look taller:

at least there is some activity on the plot... better than last year :) If this project goes through, Taipei would actually have the beginnings of a respectable skyline in xinyi.

one of the side benefits to how horribly cross-strait tourism is doing is that Songshan Airport is still not reporting rises in revenue, so we could potentially see the Airport close down. That could lead to openning up the land between Xinyi and Neihu, and we could finally see a fully developed east side of Taipei.

Ma wants more international flights from Songshan

By Ko Shu-Ling
STAFF REPORTER
Tuesday, Sep 23, 2008, Page 3
President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) said yesterday he would like to see Taipei Songshan Airport offer flights to major cities in Northeast Asia. Songshan Airport now operates only domestic flights and flights to China.

Ma said he hoped to see flights connecting Songshan to Tokyo and Seoul, as cutting travel time by avoiding Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport would help the nation’s high-tech industry.

Ma made the remarks while meeting members of the Tsinghua Enterpreneur and Executive Club at the Presidential Office.

Ma said more flights connecting Taipei, Shanghai and Tokyo would benefit the high-tech industries in those cities, adding that part of his election platform was to establish a “golden aviation circle in Northeast Asia [sic].”

Saying that his administration attached great importance to developing the high-tech industry, Ma said he wanted to see more convenient transportation between major Asian cities.

Ma said that many big cities in East Asia had two airports — one domestic and the other international. The domestic airport is often more conveniently located, while the international one is outside of the city limits.

“City airports outside many big cities in Northeast Asia are usually far away from the city and travel time from the airport to the city takes a long time,” he said. “More cities are thinking of making their domestic [centrally located] airports international.”

Tokyo was pushing flights between Haneda airport and Seoul, while Tokyo and Shanghai have begun charter flights between their domestic airports, he said.

of coz, it would be nice having more creative highrises in taipei but what taipei really needs is a central park and removing songshan will give us that! let's not forget about noise reduction and the associated perk of a songshan district renewal/new land release when the airport is removed.

i reckon, if taipei just dont have the economic capacity to accommodate super skyscrapers like the ones in hong kong or shanghai then please give us short but architecturally sound buildings!

I think they know that Shong Shan airport still in touble.

yup. Ma's entire goal for keeping Songsan open was the hope that it would become profitable once direct flights are oppened from that airport. Ironically, China has put so many restrictions on people flying to taiwan, and we've been instructed to not allow Chinese tourists to view any of our 'pro-democracy' monuments. So in the end, our 3-6 flights a day is not cutting the cheese, nor is it offsetting the decreased profits from the hsr. Considering the restricted flight path from developments all around the airport, I give songsan at most 5 years before it closes.

On the upside, if direct flights are established, Taoyuan Airport could potentially become a major transit hub throughout all of asia, which can only be good for our economy.

transit hub? dont want to discourage you but that aint going to happen with hong kong and macau right next to us. yeah sure we can become a major transit hub in the region if we start building a brand new airport and lower our airport taxes to nil. im not being negative here guys. it is just the truth. becoming a major asia-pacific transit hub has been a government slogan for over 20 years and where has it gotten us? - no way and a dilapidated airport.

i just dont understand why ma's still clinging on hopes that having an airport right in the heart of taiwan's biggest city's going to make us competitve? come on man!? i dont see hong kong keeping their kowloon airport just so their city can be competitive.

it just irritates me seeing some irrational decisions being supported by most taipei residents due to some political reasons. i remembered clearly that a few years back a DPP mayor candidate was going to demolish songshan airport for a central park but no we dont really care about your proposals since your political believes are different to mine. everything in taiwan's grossed political.

I just think maybe Taipei city government try to put pressure to Song San airport by introduction building policy.(maybe they never think about that) Many 30 floors building come out because that policy which taipei city government introduce. Recently, a lot of companies take this advantage and try to earn more profit by building higher building. Many of them are around 120m to 150m. Recently, from my understanding, the highest one is 42 floors which about 170m.

If Taipei want to be one of the most competitive cities in the world, then they must think about Taoyuan. I think Taipei need to support Taoyuan to pass that trillions dollars of plan, Taiwan Taoyuan International Air City and Taoyuan International Port.

we were once a major transit hub, and kaohsiung use to be the largest shipping hub in asia. The reason we aren't anymore is because other nations around us have stepped up their effort while we've remained stagnant. However, we do have a geographical advantage over any area you've mentioned, and we can capitalize on it- and the first step is to rennovate and promote Taoyuan Airport. And of course we need direct flights. This is not a political thing, but it is hard not to acknowledge what a big economy china is, and the fact that we are the only nation without direct flights to shanghai isn't helping.

Razqal

well being a transit hubs has it's downside too. airplanes are one of the biggest sources of air pollution and taiwan is already polluted enough. and it also causes alot of noise pollution as well.

A really good information I just got from skyscrapers.tw a few minutes before!
The design is changed!
I think it is why they stop the construction for such a long time.

New building is designed by 大元事務所. It is the same group which design Kelti Group Headquaters and CSC Headquaters. The new building will be glass curtain wall building.

The information from taiwan-city.com, the height may be pass over 220m.
Because, the developer try to get more floor area ratio.

Yes, I said there is conflict occur between senior managers. But I am wrong.
In fact, it is conflict of company establisher's sons which relate company share transaction. I don't happen to the company, but I don't think it will affect this development.

OK Cathay Life think there is too much hotel in Xiyin, they are going to change their tactic to office buidling. Thus, it is going to be glass curtain office tower for foreign bank as headquarter.

Yayyyy !!! Much better than that neo-classical brown crap design !!

And regarding that European Bank headquarter they mentioned, I think it is HSBC Bank
HSBC likes to built their headquarters near Citi Bank, and taller. For Example:
