GM Place to get new name for 2010

GM Place, the site of many of the ice events during the 2010 Olympics, will undergo a speedy name change before the Games begin.

Chief 2010 organizer John Furlong has told the International Olympic Committee the arena will likely be renamed Canada Hockey Place for the duration of the Winter Games.

The change would reflect an IOC policy that Olympic venues must be free of corporate marks.

Furlong rolled out the possible name -- which still requires Olympic Committee approval -- during an update on Games preparations delivered to committee members in Beijing.

Probably some huge banners or building wraps.

Isn't GM going to declare bankruptcy any day now anyway?

This name-everything-after-Canada thing is giving me deja vu.

funny, the Saddledome in Calgary was known as the Olympic Saddledome until the 1990's when Canadian Airlines owned the naming rights, then i believe it was the Canadian Airlines Olympic Saddledome. now its known as the Pengrowth Saddledome.

so why not call GM Place "GM Olympic Place" or something rather then Canada Hockey Place. that would make more sense.

^ why not just "Olympic Place"? plain and simple.

IOC rules have changed eversince the Calgary 1988 Games.

Saddledome is not a brand name or company name, it is the name of the building. So, they couldn't call it the GM Olympic Place, as GM is a company.

Canada Hockey Place sounds incredibly lame, though. Took them maybe 30 seconds to think of it?

"Hockey Palace" even sounds better than "Hockey Place".

Jacques Rogge Memorial Olympic Ice-Hockey Venue Thingy

Now, we just need to work on the untimely death of Mr. Rogge.

What about something simple like Olympic Arena? It feels like this city is obsessed with calling everything a "Place".

I like ice fortress. it's also fitting considering the military origin of the name canucks (for whenever GM goes under. yeah, i know it'll just be renamed).

Jacques Rogge is one of the better IOC presidents......if Sammaranch was still around, it'd be more like a dictatorship. Rogge manages things almost like a politician, not to mention he's working to downsize the Summer Games as they are far too large.

On the news it was mentioned as "Canada Hockey Place" with Furlong agreeing to the name change.

Imagine the media televising the hockey games: "We will be back at Canada Hockey Place after these messages." Lame.

There won't be any curling at GM/Canada Hockey Place, only hockey.

Why do we call everything in this city "a place"? Canada Place, BC Place, GM Place, Robson Place, Concord Pacific Place and now Canada Hockey Place???
Give it a rest already!!! Will the new art gallery be called Art's Place?
