Over the last few days I have graduated and got a promotion to a full time permanent job so as a way to celebrate I took some friends from college that graduated along with me to Québec City to check out the 400th anniversary. Québec City is the oldest city in North America.

I definitely got my fix for beautiful architecture for the year.

So let’s begin in the heart of Québec City - Vieux Québec, the first city started in North America.....

Stunning pictures! Stunning city as well, this only intensifies my interest in visiting the city.

Not all of these pictures are from Vieux Quebec, are they?

It's nice to see the first Catholic church in North America, being a Catholic myself. Are they sure that they know that there are no churches in Mexico that are older, though?

Cool. Quebec strikes me as a really, really nice place.

But this:the first city started in North Americais just not true, no matter how you slice it.

Quebec might be the oldest still-occupied French or English city in the United States or Canada, but every one of those modifiers is necessary.

http://www.traveldir.org/articles/n_america/us/what_are_the_oldest_cities_in_america.html

"Mexico City is probably the oldest city in North America, as a continuation of the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán, founded in about 1325. St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada was settled in 1528, and claims to be the oldest European-settled city in North America. St. John's earned its name when the explorer John Cabot became the first European to sail into its harbor on the Feast of St. John, June 24, 1497. It's also the easternmost city on the North American continent."

Hearing all these history stories over the last few days I'll admit I got confused so here's the proper wording....

"Quebec City is the first to have been founded with the goal of receiving permanent settlement, and not as a commercial outpost, and therefore is considered to be the first European-built city in non-Spanish North America."

Besides most of the original settlers to New Orleans where from Quebec not France so there is a connection there....even the La Moyne Brothers (Iberville/Beinville) were from Quebec.

There's Island of Orleans. I spent a night there at a sugarshack, had too many maple syrup beer that night haha. There was a group from Switzerland there so we spent most of the night singing French songs....I can only do the ding dong ding part lol.

Think I heard there's like 5 or 6 families that own large pieces of the island.

Acadia became Cajun..and New Orleans is not a Cajun city.

Southern Central and Southwestern Louisiana is Cajun country.

I'm extremely well versed in New Orleans history...even most of the first buildings in the French Quarter were primate material modeled after the design of the buildings in Old Quebec and Montreal, but they fell apart in the moist soil and soon found out they did not adapt well to the wet, humid climate...and started to borrow from the French colony at St. Domingue.

^Yes well, Quebec was an established cities with their own distinct culture, and identity. Same goes for New Orleans...but there was a rift during much of the French colonial timeframe from 1718-1763 between the mostly military population who arrived from Quebec along with La Moyne de Bienville and the commissioner general of Louisiana Jaques de la Chaise from France, particularly after the collapse of the Company of the Indies.

Anyhow I'm getting off onto an interesting...but off topic tangent.
