It was a beautiful day yesterday so my wife and I headed downtown to look in a few shops (her) and take a few pictures (me). One store we went to was Map World. If you like maps, it is a great place to go.

Eight Avenue Place - it will be 49 storeys. As you can see, it has a long way to go.

A few of the buildings near the new courts building (the green one in the 3rd picture)

Centennial Place - this will comprise a 40 storey and 23 storey building

Jameison - it will be a 38 storey building

Petro Canada Tower. Currently the tallest in Calgary which will change when the Bow is build

A park in downtown Calgary

There was some kind of parade with skateboarders.

A few of the Bow. It will be the new tallest in Calgary at 58 floors. I have heard (can't confirm) that it would have been a lot taller by the shadow nazis but the kyboch to that as it would have cast a shadow on the walkway near the river. Damn shadow nazis :hell:

The view from 5th Ave.

This might be a neat place to go some day.

The view from 7th Ave. looking to 6th Ave. They reconstructed the street and as I understand it would have paid big fines if it would not be ready for the Stampede which starts in early July.

Saw this guy at an LRT station on 7th Ave. Not sure what it was in aid of.

Looking up at Bankers Hall from 7th Ave. The limo was from a wedding.

Bankers Court, which will be 15 storeys and is beside Bankers Hall. The giant tee is obviously a golf promotion.

I really like this building. All 4 sides angle out into the street.

And finally, Bow square and Petro Canada

Calgary looks so cool and there is so much going on. no offence to anyone as I have never been, but I hear a lot of negative stuff about Calgary from people who have lived there. Itz probably bullshit. They're resentful that they moved to Ontario right before Calgary started regenerating.

Like every city, it has it good points and bad points. Personally, I really like Calgary. To me a real bonus to living in Calgary are the foothills and mountains which are so close.

nice tour and good updates...but my god does Calgary need help (along with many cities i should add) at making the downtown feel warm, inviting, friendly, and actually have people out and about.

beltline is coming along in this regard, but the core is hurting

Well, I suppose like anywhere else Calgary's not for everyone...in my case, as a transplanted Ontarian, it took a good year or so for the place to grow on me. This city is constantly evolving, and certainly the Calgary of 10 or even 5 years ago is quite different from the Calgary of today. But to be able to live in a major city, yet so close to unspoiled wilderness is the draw for me.

Calgary's downtown is business driven, all of these photos are taken in areas dense in office buildings. Of course they're not going to have tons of people around on a weekend. They aren't the most inviting environments, but that's not their purpose. Not every street in a city will be a bustling with activity 7 days a week, and that's fine s long as there are places which are.

There are plenty of nice pedestrian friendly areas in Calgary's downtown, these photos just don't highlight that. Stephen Avenue, Eau Claire/Prince's Island Park and Chinatown all would have plenty of people around on this day.

Calgary is such a pleasant city to view in photos with its complete CBD and balanced skyline. I'd love to come visit someday and see it in person.
