Although this article is old, I really hope there are new candidates to challenge Corrigan. I was really tempted to name this thread: Mayor Derek Corrigan is being cocky but nvm... =P
Mayor Derek Corrigan awaits challengers in BurnabyBy Carlito Pablo
Burnaby mayor Derek Corrigan must be the envy of Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan.
Acclaimed on May 4 by the Burnaby Citizens Association as the centre-left party’s mayoral bet in this year’s civic election, Corrigan is a candidate looking for a challenger.
“I heard rumours that two of the councilors will run, and I hope they will,” a confident Corrigan told the Straight.
The Burnaby mayor was referring to councillors Garth Evans and Lee Rankin, former colleagues in TEAM Burnaby, the centre-right party that saw the desertions this year of Evans and another councillor, Gary Begin.
For his part, Sullivan first has to beat his challenger, Coun. Peter Ladner, for the nomination of the Non-Partisan Association on June 8. If victorious, Sullivan will then proceed to the November 15 election, in which he’ll face the winner of Vision Vancouver’sJune 15 nomination meeting. It remains to be seen whether the Coalition of Progressive Electors will field a candidate, although Coun. David Cadman has said he’s open to being drafted.
Corrigan doesn’t seem to have such determined opponents. Rankin is the only TEAM Burnaby councillor left after Evans and Begin quit the party, and he didn’t want to say whether he’ll run against Corrigan. He told the Straight only that he “hasn’t ruled anything out or in”.
“I will do whatever is best for TEAM,” Rankin said. “There are many new candidates coming forward.”
Evans explained to the Straight that he left TEAM Burnaby in April to sit as an independent because he didn’t agree with the party’s insistence that he always follow the caucus line in voting on matters before council.
“It’s not clear who will run for mayor,” Evans told the Straight. “I’m considering my options, just like anybody else. I haven’t made a decision as to what office I would run for.”
Evans added that he has also heard talk that B.C. Liberal MLA Harry Bloy, of Burquitlam, may run against Corrigan, who is affiliated with the provincial NDP.
Anyone have any updates?
