Ok, so it's been a long time since I posted and I've accumulated a big wash of back inventory that I need to clear out. It'll probably take a few threads so this is the first of X number. For no reason I'm starting with the most current pics.

These photos were all taken this weekend in two locales: Along Sandy Blvd. in NE Portland and in my neighborhood in NW Portland. Since it was 90 degrees yesterday I couldn't resist the temptation to get a sunburn and look for girls. I don't have a map to post but mostly I've tried to call out the locations of various pics.

Sandy Blvd. is an interesting Portland thoroughfare. The rest of the city is laid out in a grid and it is criss-crosses the NE on a diagonal. Parts of it are suburban and other parts, like the Hollywood District, are quite urban. NW Portland, meanwhile, is a turn-of-the-century neighborhood close to Downtown.

OK, so enough of that. On with the pics:

Somewhere out Sandy, around 60th Ave. The start of a stip of blocks containing many Vietnamese businesses.

Tattoo joint around 39th.

In the same block with the tattoo parlor.

View up Sandy from the base of a hill starting about 48th.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97266735.jpg
They looked older before I zoomed in. Apparently they were walking to a church carwash at a gas station.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97267091.jpg
Never been in this joint. Looks to be a Chinese restaurant/nightclub.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97267095.jpg
See, here they are.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97267101.jpg
The Rose Hollywood Chapel. Not sure if it's for weddings or what, but I bet it's got a rich history.

Interlude: a quick jump back to my neighborhood in NW Portland:

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268114.jpg
Converted Fire Station, now residences

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268118.jpg
Two neighboring houses that were probably once twins but have since been renovated in different directions.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268122.jpg
House across the street with a lowered VW Passat with Audi rims.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268127.jpg
A somewhat common type of apartment building from the 1950s, built as infill in many older neighborhoods.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268133.jpg
It's next-door neighbor... barely wider than a 4x4.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268138.jpg
Leafy manse at the base of the West Hills.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268146.jpg
Yeah, rooftops... On that note, back to Sandy Blvd.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268472.jpg
Love this building.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268477.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268481.jpg
Not sure of the name of this neighborhood. Basically it's sort of a fragment right off of Sandy.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268485.jpg
One day I will have a bungalow like that.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268488.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268496.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268499.jpg
Back to the building I love, looking from across Sandy.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268504.jpg
Beautiful girl waiting for the bus.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268508.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268803.jpg
A strange used-car dealership specializing solely in 195os-70s sport utes.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268805.jpg
The other end of it.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268807.jpg
I-84 overpass, looking West towards the Lloyd Center skyline.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268809.jpg
NE 28th Ave.., just north of Sandy.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268811.jpg
And NE 28th Ave. just south of Sandy.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268812.jpg
Because I just can't get enough of it.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268815.jpg
Some neighborhood... too cute for my tastes.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268818.jpg
Elsewhere in the neighborhood. Larger, but a little more modest.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268820.jpg
Church parking lot adjoining a 1920s garden apartment complex.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97268823.jpg
Approaching the Hollywood District from the west. A converted gas station in front and I'm not sure what the yellow building is.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269001.jpg
Overlooking I-84, the Max line, and an overpass on-ramp.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269004.jpg
Giant Budweiser billboard where Sandy crosses I-84.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269008.jpg
Since Sandy crosses the city on a diagonal some of the intersections and building alignments are funky.

Ok, back to NW:

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269012.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269016.jpg
Portland's Vespa dealership on NW 23rd Ave.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269018.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269023.jpg
Lots of ladies yesterday.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269028.jpg
Looking into the Vespa shop, which appears to be only about 8' wide.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269032.jpg
Next door, converted houses turned into multi-floor shops.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269035.jpg
God, look at that blue sky!

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269037.jpg
Infill retail.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269548.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269551.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269556.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269560.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269565.jpg
A very common sight in Portland, although this one is quite tame.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269569.jpg
The side of a popular stuffed animal and pet store at Kearney and 23rd.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269572.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269577.jpg
I see this guy all over the place. He hangs out at the laundromat.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269581.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269584.jpg
I love a yard with cars parked all over it.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269768.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269771.jpg
I love this parking spot too.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269776.jpg
A curious apartment/condo complex that I've always liked. I think it's the scale.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269780.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269783.jpg

And now, just a few more back in Hollywood:

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269786.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269789.jpg
The back of the Bookmark Apartments... which is way more interesting than the front so I didn't photograph it.

http://www.pbase.com/mattgarner/image/97269793.jpg
And on a final note, the awesome Hollywood theatre with an abandoned grass lot next door that everybody likes to walk through.

Thanks for stopping by. More parts will come.

Very nice. I've only driven through Hollywood once, but I want to get back there and do another "neighborhood tour." Thanks for the pics.

I'm really digging this idea-I'll be back for more.

Thanks for opening up PDX to me. What are the hipster parts of the city?

Nice. Looks very laid back and comfy. Some of that commentary was hilarious. Great thread overall.

Great collection.

I imagine in 20 years Sandy Blvd and Hollywood will be completely transformed. Already Hollywood is rapidly developing.

There used to be a building next to the Hollywood Theater that burned down a few years ago. Hence the vacant lot.

I live right off Sandy near the "timberline dodge" car dealerships. For some reason I find the thoroughfare endearing, even if it's a bit trashy/suburban in places. There is a neat skyline vantage point one gets driving southwest somewhere around 56th ave. I think you need to be in the middle of the road to get a good picture though as the wide road provides a good view corridor.
