Also, there area a bunch of stories in the papers about the roof - guess they had the news conference planned for well after they knew everything was OK with the first mast.

Terry Fox Memorial (arch) will be taken down and the plaza redeveloped with a new Terry Fox Memorial.

I especially like the 2nd photo in the CKNW gallery showing a worker & the centre hub - the bolt holes that the wire ropes attach to are bigger than his head.

And the 6th photo showing how big the base of the mast is - again with workers for scale to show the massive size of just the base. The top of the mast is another 14 stories higher.

awesome!

okay, let's not go crazy.

but i think the designer focussed too much on making something current (don't forget this was the dreadful 80's) rather than something that was timeless as a memorial should be.

I thought the same thing after hearing about this on the news. I couldn't believe that some of the people interviewed were actually upset to hear this disgrace is being torn down. Rebuilding the Terry Fox Plaza is a great opportunity to honour this local icon with a monument that better represents the accomplishment. The current Terry Fox monument is embarrassing it should be replaced with a landmark that tourist will want to visit.

I'm old enough to remember when the Terry Fox Memorial was put up. Believe me, it wasn't well received. I think people were just as confused about it then as they are now. You can cite 'crappy 80s aesthetic' but even back then I don't think anyone really thought it was attractive in any way.

There was speculation at the time about what could be up on the 2nd floor behind those Asian-styled windows. Makes you wonder, what exactly is up there???

When the arch was built it used to light up, but maintenance hasn't been quite up to par, so it has been left dark for a long while now. If you walk under the arch, the story of Terry Fox is engraved inside.

Here's the link on the City's Public Art Registry which includes who built it, when it was built, and the artist's statement about what it represents.

http://vancouver.ca/publicart_wac/publicart.exe/indiv_artwork?pnRegistry_No=161

Its is meant to be a "postmodern interpretation of the triumphal arches of Rome". It could easily have been designed by Michael Graves; well known at the time for the Portland Building and subsequently many resort hotels.

I still wonder if they're going to do anything to the glass in and around the concourse area? Like...that's some dirty stuff. Makes the building look...half renovated, at least, from the outside. Also, are they going to change up the BC Place logo on the building, when the naming rights are done?

I'm intrigued to see what the new BC Place will look like, from both externally and internally. The renderings look great - but it's just that - renderings. What the final product will look like, that, I'm interested in. I have a gut feeling, that it'll look half-assed renos. Aside from the roof, not much else has changed. I hope I'm wrong, though, but then again, this is Vancouver, where many things are done half-assed.

How much was spent prior to the Olympics? $20m? They did some decent things but nothing awesome.

There is $100m in the current budget for interior upgrades, so that should be pretty significant.

I'd be willing to bet that they scrap the apparent LED lighting features on the new roof. Many of the promotional renderings show beautiful multi-coloured lighting displays on all cables, on the roof itself, and on the new glass panels at the base of the masts. I'm sure that was just used to sell the idea of the room--a "wow" feature, if you will. Anyone wanna bet that the roof remains pitch dark after construction is complete?

Mast 4 is in mid-air about to be attached. They seem to be ramping up to 2+ masts a week. Good thing, I guess, since the whole project is supposed to be done in about 45 more weeks, and that includes adding the roof material. There are what, 49 more masts to go?

It occurs to me that the huge crane will have to be operated very carefully as the number of masts increase. Normally it sticks up above the level of the support cables. Obviously it will need to be lower when moving around the stadium floor - even when it's carrying a new mast into place.

officedweller
Aug 13, 2010, 5:30 PM
36 masts in total - so 32 more to go - at 2 per week that'll be 16 weeks or roughly 4 months before it'll be fully ringed with masts.

Yeah, they're balancing the masts by erecting them in balanced pairs (opposite each other), so it definitely be tricky moving the mega crane around later in the process.

The first of the 130 ton masts is lifted into position at BC Place Stadium.

BRADLEY FEHR
editor

The new roof on BC Place Stadium is taking shape on Vancouver’s skyline. Construction crews recently started erecting the 36 masts that will ring the stadium and keep the new retractable roof in place.
“It’s one of the most complicated projects taken on in this community,” said David Podmore, chairman of BC Pavilion Corporation (PavCo), the Crown corporation that manages the stadium. “It’s a difficult project on a tight schedule.”
PCL Westcoast Constructor Inc. is the general contractor.
Each mast is about 50 meters long and weighs about 130 tons.
A massive crane is being used to put them in place. It can lift more than 1,100 tons, but has a capacity of 600 tons in its current configuration.
“It’s the largest crane I’ve seen,” Podmore said.
Eighty-five semi-trailers were needed to get the crane to jobsite.

Since they want to maintain a balance of masts, it makes sense if the first two pairs are on the N-S alignment, the next two pairs would be on the E-W alignment. With these masts up & the cables running to the hub, it makes it harder for the hub to be pulled off-center as more masts & cables are installed.

I would expect the next masts & cables would be the NW-SE pairs and SW-NE pairs by which time almost half the masts are installed and you've got a more stable eight-way connection between the hub and the masts.

What about Tim Horton's Field, and when the roof is open people can call it the Donut. "...and in other sporting news, The Whitecaps host Toronto FC at The Donut this evening."

I went past the stadium last night in a cab. The traffic lane nearest the stadium is closed-off for construction. But once it's opened-up, you will be driving directly underneath those 200+ tonne supports...I didn't feel too comfortable just being that near them in a zooming cab, let alone stuck in traffic underneath one.

So we won't find you enjoying the Canada Place promenade with those dangerous masts overhead that are holding up the roof of the convention centre?

LOL
I think it's just a silly psychological irrationality. Th way it's designed and just hangs over the street. A bit like standing on the glass viewing floor of the CN Tower. You know it's been designed to bear the weight, but "what if...?" is what our subconscious whispers.

And with BC Place, you wonder "just how old that concrete lip is that is bearing that 200-tonne piledriver which is hanging directly over out car right now...c'mon traffic line, c'mon..."
:D

Here’s how BC Place will look at night. The colours will be able to change throughout the colour spectrum.

A stadium that looks like that would not get built in the US in this day and age.

please elaborate

Just doesn't look like a stadium suited for North American cities. Too European
This type of stadium wouldn't be out of place at all in east Asia, like Japan and China. I think it's great!

However I can see the nimbys coming out of the woodwork when this lighting goes up. The stadium will end up having to turn off the lights at 9pm or something stupid like that.

Anyway, the stadium sort of reminds me of those nubbed hair brushes. I feel like picking it up and running it through my hair.

I doubt these lights will be on "every night", that would be a waste of power.
Most likely only during events and scaled down to about 10% - 30% what is shown at times when nothing is happening.

So, went from marshmallow/mushroom to a crown that can double as a hairbrush.

I wonder how visible these lights will be from the inside. It would be cool if the lights cycled when a goal was scored, or a touchdown for the Lions.

The roof reminds of spider web and the lights are like rain drops.

I think you have to keep in mind that this is a model people are a few feet away from.

Light is rather difficult to scale model. I can put a tiny LED on a model, and it will look crazy bright compared to the size of the building, because our brain doesn't scale it properly. I can then put a light 20 times brighter on a real building, then if you're standing far more than 20 times further away, it will appear rather dim.

What I'm saying is you can put up all the lights represented in the model, to proper scale, and it will come out with the same intensity as a combination of the spot LED lights on Science World and the color flood lights on Canada Place (and does anyone worth listening to complain about Science World or Canada Place).

Just came across this casino/hotel rendering on the BC Place website. I'm not sure if it's been posted here yet.
