View Full Version : The Great Metro Vancouver Crane Count

Apr 18, 2008, 5:31 AM
So, due to some Calgary crane-number bragging in the Tower Crane Panoramas thread in the Canada sub-forum, I thought it might be fun to try keeping a tally of current cranes up in the city ;) . Perhaps this is a stupid idea as cranes seem to go up and come down practically on a daily basis around here but what the heck. And any administrators can feel free to move this thread to a more appropriate sub-forum... and if there is little popular support for this thread then feel free to delete it!

I think the best way for this to work is for me to maintain/edit the list in this first post and add to it as you all post new info. If you have any recent pictures of the cranes as proof, I suppose that would be ideal. And I'll only add to the list if you're 100% sure there is currently a crane where (at which development) you say there is one.

And these cranes can include developments from condos, bridges, transit lines, etc.

So, to get the ball rolling, I'll start with this great list started by our own SFUVancouver:

There are/were a whole bunch at the Seymour Water Filtration Plant in North Vancouver. I haven't been up there for a while so I'm not sure how many there currently are.

^I don't think they're still around though I could be wrong.

I found a photo of the cranes there on flickr.com but it was uploaded in 2005 so I'm guessing they're down by now: http://www.flickr.com/photos/43517501@N00/33815597/

There is 2 at the bridgeport station park and ride being built. 1 on 41st between Dunbar and East Boulevard ( I think its Elm Street). 1 at the YVR Canada line station. Also 1 each at 41st and Cambie and at 49th and Cambie which were there earlier this month, I assume there still there. Also there is another one at UBC near the engineering area, but forgot the name of the building. There is at least 1 at Wesbrook Place at UBC.

great list raggedy13!

the crane at raffles came down some time ago so that can be removed.

There is another random crane sort of in the Brentwood area, but south of Highway 1 on canada way... I dont think that one was counted.

Expect among the many new ones several cranes at the Evelyn Drive site in West Vancouver... I should walk down the street and snap some pics of that soon, it is starting to come along as they ahve finished most of the grading and foundation work is commencing/ongoing.

Corrections for Richmond

1) River Rock Casino Expansion is the same as Bridgeport Park 'n Ride, and the total for this site is 2 cranes
2) Delete: Mandalay (1-2) & Garden City Living (1) - all of those cranes are no longer there.

Do 'light' cranes count? i.e., those used along Canada Line, or for low-rise developments?
If so, add:

Merry Park Living (SW corner of Buswell & Westminster Hwy) - 1
Meridian Gate (Odlin Rd, just west of Garden City Rd) - 2
Unknown condo development (NE corner of Cooney Rd & Granville Rd.) - 1

There are probably a dozen alone here in West Vancouver building single family homes.

Thanks everybody!

Update:
-Raffles removed
-Mandalay & Garden City Living (Richmond) removed
-River Rock Casino Expansion & Bridgeport Park & Ride error fixed/projects consolidated
-All the above mentioned added
-Potential count added

I guess we'll avoid light cranes... so if any of the previous cranes mentioned are light cranes, let me know and I can either remove them or create a light cranes sub-section to the list.

Update:
-Temorary(?) light cranes sub-section added - with bils mentioned projects

can someone post an image of what a 'light crane' is? i just used that term loosely to describe what i think it looks like. what i'm thinking of is something that looks like a leaner version of a typical crane, not attached to a vehicle or anything.

Assuming you're going by the same definition that we use for the Calgary count, similar to the one in this shot by Surrealplaces:

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/5614/000xu2.jpg

Generally defined as having a non permantent base (usually anchored by several large weights instead of into poured concrete) and a really small frame with no cab on the top. We've counted proper tower cranes with cabs on the tower that aren't into poured cement in Calgary's count, as we've had 2 now (one that was on the roof of an existing building for an expansion, and another thats currently at the Bow site)

Possible double counting here? Also, Citi and Motif were counted twice on that list as well (SFUVancouver said there's 2 cranes total there).

Brentwood south of Highway 1 on canada way(?): 1This is the latest phase of the Discovery Place tech park (http://www.city.burnaby.bc.ca/business/centres/dscvry.html).

My take on it is that those potain cranes should count. In some projects they are taking the place of mobile cranes, which wouldn't count, but in many others they are surely taking the place of fixed tower cranes.

For example this one out at the airport is certainly in lieu of a tower crane:

http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/7385/yvrcanadalinestnapril16mk6.jpg
http://creativecommons.org/images/public/somerights20.png (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.5/ca/) My photo, taken April 16th, 2008.

Also, Crossroads is down to one crane.

Thanks, issues fixed. But I'll need someone to guarantee that Silhouette is the "Building(?) behind Lougheed Mall" before I'm willing to change it. You're probably right but I don't know enough about the area to make a decision on "possible" double counting I'm afraid.

I have a tendency to agree with SFUVancouver as he comes across as pretty brilliant much of the time, so I'm happy to count potain cranes used in lieu of a tower crane, but how do we go about determining which ones are in lieu of mobile vs. fixed tower cranes? Is it generally fairly obvious?

SFUVancouver
Apr 19, 2008, 10:53 PM
^ Aw shucks...

I think that Potain (light) cranes are fixed enough to count as tower cranes since they are regularly called upon for months of service from a fixed location. The fact that they are not embedded in concrete should not be the defining criteria. If so, the tower cranes that laboured on the new Convention Centre wouldn't count either since they were on rails, if I'm not mistaken.

I draw the line at including mobile wheeled cranes and those monsters that erect tower cranes and luff HVAC stuff to roofs.

Interestingly enough the steel-frame Lake City Way office building was built without either a tower or a potain crane. Since it is located above the bus loop they had a nice firm, level concrete pad to work with and the limited six storey height of the building lent itself well to mobile cranes.

I've been working there for the past couple months doing the heating. Pretty amazing how one mobile crane can do so much work, and how essential it is to the project. It's a completely different deal for the crane operator, working from the ground rather than overhead.

And I'm still not exactly sure what to do with the light crane thing. I know some of the ones in the main list are those Potain/light cranes so I'll have to do something about that.

I think I'll keep/move the Potain cranes used in lieu of fixed tower cranes in/to the main list but put an asterisk beside them and then other light cranes can go in a separate list. I don't feel like doing it right now though. :D
