In most European cities they paint the asphalt within the bike lanes red:

I think it really helps delineate the cycling space psychologically. You're less likely to drive into that coloured space I imagine, than with it being unpainted (as it is now).

I've noticed the city has fill painted some parts of the bike lanes (e.g. north end of Burrard, entrance of Stanley Park, etc.)

Why not go all the way? Do the rest I say!!

i love those. I believe Richmond is planning to have painted bike lanes.....and on Blanca and 10th Avenue near UBC, they've done a craptastic job of painting blue/white striped crosswalks (or were they bike lanes? i don't remember). point is, the blue/white paint is already chipping away...a lot of it is gone, and it was only painted recently.

There are a few, but I don't remember where.

There's something like that at Union & Main:

Good idea....

...but those are only for intersections - the new "bike boxes" as City of Van likes to call them. They are very helpful, but would be more usefull if whole lane was painted. But then again, as a lot of our bike lanes are entire streets (union, adanac, 10th) etc, not sure if painting is feasible. Perhaps downtown and on other streets where bike lane isnt the entire road, painting would bea good idea.

In the pic above, I think that's not a painted bike lane - I think it's a different colour asphalt - which is more costly to install.

maybe Canadians are smarter than europeans and don't need them?

paint would never last in rainy weather - it would have to be coloured asphalt as od said

I would love to see them and it makes so much more sense to do so. It increases the visibility and awarness, which is safer for both bikers and drivers.
