Someone in here said that the proposed Stutz would be great if they got rid of the so-called "taser prongs." Are you kidding me? The towers are what make that building unique. It's called creativity. I realize Hoosiers don't much like creatitivity, but keep the "taser prongs"!

I'm glad Indianapolis is finally starting to fill in their city center. Downtown nightlife is definatley there, but alot more could be done, and it looks like they're trying to do it. More pedestrian friendly retail/residential buildings, sidewalk accesable shopping, thats all going in the right direction.

Apr 27, 2009, 9:16 PM
And wow, thats fucked up someone burned down the Cosmopolitan. If I was the architect I'd be investing my time in a personal investigation on who did this, put a bounty on their head and see how the culprit is.

There were three similiar fires in St. Louis. The projects were near completion, but were torched by an arsonist. Maybe St. Louis and Indianapolis authorities could do a joint task force with the ATF or FBI.

The projects in St. Louis were rebuilt.

They really should have kept the RCA Dome... It looked great next to Lucas Oil Std and it would have served just as good a purpose as what their building. Would also liked for them to have done something with Market Square Arena as well.

I would just like to see the city density with more quality infill. I did see some of that already, but I hope more is one the way and it doesn't look as sprawly. Overall it is a very nice city with a great quality of life. I could see myself living there and being happy. The downtown is great and I did venture out to see the new airport and was impressed. The stadium and arena is nice. It's also nice to see the city and metro are growing at a solid pace. Things are in place for the city but densification and more of an identity is needed. I also wish the city had more of a rock/heavy metal scene than just rap and a few other genres.

Why oh why didn't they build the entire building out of concrete!! Penny wise dollar foolish!!!

You wouldn't see this in Mexico, as you can't even get insurance on a house, apartment building or motel built with wood down there! But then, if it was all built out of concrete, why would you need insurance anyway?

City to get first look at $70M second phase of Pulliam Square (http://www.ibj.com/blogs/3-property-lines/post/59123-city-to-get-first-look-at-second-phase-of-pulliam-square-downtown)

The developer of downtown’s Pulliam Square apartment-and-retail project planned to submit a design to the city on Thursday for its much-anticipated second phase.

Dubbed The Park at Pulliam Square, the $70 million project would be built on the site of the former Indianapolis Star headquarters at 307 N. Pennsylvania St.

TWG Development LLC is set on July 28 to present its plans to the Regional Center hearing examiner, with construction starting in the fall. The project should be finished in spring 2018, TWG President Tony Knoble said.

The nine-story building would feature 334 apartment units and 4,600 square feet of office space, in addition to 7,000 square feet of retail space at the corner of New York and Talbott streets, which would be marketed for a restaurant.

Kite to build 2 hotels at Pan Am Plaza; city to spend $120M on attached meeting space (https://www.ibj.com/articles/70937-kite-to-build-2-hotels-at-pan-am-plaza-city-to-spend-120m-on-attached-meeting-space)

https://www.capitalimprovementboard.org/main/cib-content/uploads/2018/10/ICC-Expansion-Renderings.pdf

Indianapolis’ once-celebrated-but-now-underused Pan Am Plaza is the planned site of a $120 million, publicly funded addition to the Indiana Convention Center plus two privately funded Hilton-branded hotels that together would have more than 1,400 rooms.

The Capital Improvement Board voted on Friday to recommend construction of the convention center expansion and to work with Kite Realty Group Trust as the master developer on the project.

The resolution gives the CIB authority to work on a project agreement with Kite and an overall financing model.

The Kite plan was one of three submitted in March in response to the CIB’s request for proposals for another convention-style hotel with 800 to 1,000 rooms.

Mayor Joe Hogsett’s administration has endorsed the Kite plan.

A key component of the project is a 38-story, 800-room hotel that would be developed by Kite and branded as Hilton on the northeast corner of the plaza at Illinois and Georgia streets. It would be Indianapolis’ second-largest hotel, behind only the 1,005-room JW Marriott that opened in 2011.

Kite plans to build a second, 600-room hotel, as well, which would be on the southeast corner of the block at Illinois and Louisiana streets. It also would carry a Hilton brand.

Kite would oversee the construction of the ballroom building, as well, but wouldn’t own it. Indianapolis-based RATIO Architects is the architect on the project.

The project would involve tearing down the underground parking structure, building a podium to support the two-story ballroom and additional meeting space, as well as general property acquisition costs, Cook said. The city also would build the climate-controlled walkway over Capitol Avenue to connect the Indiana Convention Center with the new complex.

The city hopes to win approvals for the project within 12 months, setting the stage for groundbreaking in 2019. The construction is expected to take multiple years, but officials said it would not interfere with activity at the convention center.

Elanco Animal Health plans to establish its global operations in Indiana, constructing a $100 million headquarters at the former GM stamping plant site, just south of the Indianapolis Zoo. State, city, and company officials announced the deal Friday that will include as much as $170 million in taxpayer-funded incentives. The new headquarters is part of a $300 million investment Elanco plans to make in Indiana, which will serve as the base for the company's consolidated global operations. The company will relocate its headquarters from Greenfield, about 25 miles east of Indianapolis. Friday's announcement finalizes the company's multi-state search to find a new site to call home...

INDIANAPOLIS - Greenfield-based Elanco Animal Health Inc. (NYSE: ELAN) is making a major statement about its future in Indiana. The company has announced plans to relocate its global headquarters to a new 45-acre campus at the site of the former GM Stamping Plant in downtown Indianapolis as part of a $300 million investment to make Indiana its base of operations. Elanco says the massive investment will retain more than 1,600 jobs and create more than 570 jobs over the next decade. Elanco, which became the second-largest animal health company in the world after this year's $7 billion acquisition of Bayer Animal Health, says the new site in downtown Indy will allow it to consolidate its global operations and more than 1,000 team members at one location...

That is certainly a massive improvement over the current state of the site, and it appears that early planning layouts are prioritizing an urban street grid over something that is closed off to the surrounding city.

Also, would anyone happen to know if the Hilton hotels at Pan Am Plaza, announced a few posts up in 2018, were jeopardized by the pandemic and its associated decline in tourism and events? I would hope that the convention center-adjacent location would work in its favor, as such hotels in other cities are currently still underway.

Bloomington -

I know that this isn't really Indianapolis, by any definition. But it seemed interesting enough to mention it, and I wasn't sure where else to put it. An unbuilt Mies van der Rohe design is now being constructed on Indiana University's campus, to house the School of Art, Architecture + Design. Thomas Phifer and Partners is leading the effort and is attempting to honor the original design vision, but with updated details & systems to meet current codes -
