^Crazy to see Royal Centre/Hyatt under construction. Guess it was the new tallest in its day. Wonder if there were any skyscraper enthusiasts closely following its construction as we now follow Shangri-la's.

you just made me remember, I had a whole slew of vintage Vancouver skyline pics in the old SkyscraperPage gallery. when I get that back up and running we'll be able to take a look at all of them again!

Here's one from 1973....

No idea what year this one is. The city is almost unrecognizable, save for the Marine Building.

Cool thanks Dylan. Maybe we could merge it into this thread.

Here's a pic of the lighting on the Sun Tower. Apparently from 1946.

Would be a really cool landmark at night if it still had that lighting on it.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. The caption on the website actually said Grouse, so I figured they knew better. Obviously not!

Picture looking east down Hastings at Granville. You can see the Birks Clock in its original location - across Hastings from its current location. Sadly I couldn't find a date for this one (but obviously a major leap back in time from the previous pictures posted).

Just found this other pic (small - sorry) at the exact same spot in 1907. Based on all the wires I'm guessing this is an earlier pic than the one above.

That'd be totally amazing if they restored the Sun Tower's lights to their former glory.

It had a few incarnations. It was The World tower at one time with a globe up top. I think I've also seen a pic with a Shell logo up top.

Wow. I had no idea it was built in 1958. I had friends who rented a unit in there a while ago. It's obviously been taken care very well because I never would have guess it was that old. It was one of Vancouver's first forays in to the 'international' style. The other would be the tower on Burrard St. The name escapes me at the moment.

My sentiments exactly! I'll bet back then lots of people looked up at the Royal Bank building and went "wow!", just as we are today with Shangri-La.

As a Victorian, the most amazing thing about the Georgian Towers is that it is the exact same size as a building built here in Victoria 11 years later. The difference is that our building (Orchard House) is still the tallest, whereas the Georgian Towers is virtually invisible in Vancouver now.
