So considering Hamilton has become "Hollywood North" thanks to tax-exemptions for those filming outside of Toronto, I thought it'd be neat to have a thread dedicated to what's being shot in Hamilton and area.

Between Wed Nov 27th & Thu Nov 28th, I saw a film crew set up (again) at the Royal Connaught.
They were filming a TV Miniseries called XIII.

No offence Hamilton, but I'm pretty sure Vancouver is considered Hollywood North. ;)

But damned if that ain't a list to trump all lists, though!

Good list...but never once have I heard Hamilton considered as "Hollywood North." I think that title is reserved for Vancouver.

I'd love to see some sort of ranking of films/shows shot in Canadian cities....would be neat to see.

Though it doesn't have the official title, if you lived here you'd agree with it. Nearly every week for the past year there has been a movie shot going on somewhere downtown. At one point there was 3 different productions being shot simultaneously in the core this summer (Hulk, TD bank commercial and something else). This of course isn't even counting the rest of the city.

I'd be interested to see what the city is making from all of this...

Quote from the CBC News Thursday, July 13, 2006

It's been a boon for Steeltown where last year alone, about 100 productions shot on location in and around the city.

Wow, those are some awesome shots from Flickr, Steeltown!!!
I think it's important to note that almost none of those smaller shop-like buildings actually exist. They are all film set that took about 3 weeks to set up.
I watched some of those scenes from the Ramada/Plaza Hotel's 2nd storey parking garage and saw a car explode and fly almost all the way from Catherine to John!! SOOO kewl!!

There's a notice in my lobby from 20th Century Fox saying they're going to be shooting MAX PAYNE in the James, King, King William, and Rebecca area. They're going to be using that dark and scary alleyway on the east side of James between King William and King, also shooting outside Lister, something about creating some fake snow, also police and traffic control something something.

Max Payne eh. Mark Wahlberg stars in that.

Between The Big Hit, Four Brothers and the upcoming Max Payne - I guess we'll know early if a movie will be filmed in Hamilton based on whether Wahlberg's in the film or not.

Hamilton Film and Television Office 2007 Annual Report

For the information of the Economic Development and Planning Committee, the following is the annual report for the Film and Cultural Industries for 2007.

There is a growing film and cultural scene in Hamilton and this trend continued in 2007. With over 100 productions shot in Hamilton throughout the year, the City was a beehive of activity. Increased film production brings more creative people which changes the social landscape of the City. More art studios are opening in the older sections of Hamilton, film studios are cropping up and the music industry continues to be strong.

For the fourth consecutive year, filming has directly injected over $10 million dollars into the local economy with spending on location shooting, hotels, restaurants, stores and other services. This financial injection is somewhat smaller than in 2006 which is a direct reflection of the Provincial statistics for the same time period. The number of productions in Ontario are stable but the total value to Ontario of these productions is slightly down.

Year ......# of Productions Prep......Shoot & Wrap Days ......Direct Impact
2002 .................58 ..............................834 ..................$5 million
2003 .................45 ..............................600 ..................$8 million
2004 .................48 ..............................740 ..................$10.5 million
2005 .................90 .............................1330 ..................$15.6 million
2006 .................94 .............................1280 ..................$15 million
2007 ................106..............................1318 ..................$12 million

These consistently strong numbers over the last six (6) years happened in the face of a number of major events and economic pressures from the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic, to 9/11, and more recently, strikes and a strong Canadian dollar.

Hamilton continues to be the location of choice for productions considering Ontario for their shows. Major motion pictures such as The Incredible Hulk, Flash of Genius, Traitor, Repossession Mambo and Splice to name a few, chose Hamilton for much of their location filming but, domestic (Canadian) production is responsible for the lion’s share of our numbers. These domestic productions keep Hamilton immune to the negative impacts of a strong Canadian dollar and union work stoppages across the border.

Domestic production chooses Hamilton for their location shooting because of our great locations and film-friendly attitude but also because of the Provincial Regional Bonus that they are eligible for. We must continue to encourage the Province to keep this regional bonus in order for Hamilton to maintain some leverage in this competitive market.

The City has also made some incredible gains in the cultural industries segment of the cluster. For example, the Art Bus came on strong in 2007 through the work of the owners of the Pearl Factory. As well, attention is turning to James Street North as an identifiable art district and ‘the place to go’ for arts and culture in the City. The Art Bus tour reaches out to many of the communities in Hamilton such as the Carnegie Gallery in Dundas and the Sunrise Gallery along the Beach Strip. These jewels have continued to grow throughout 2007, creating exhibit space for scores of Hamilton area artists.

The Imperial Cotton Centre for the Arts launched a relationship with another property owner to renovate additional artists’ space at the newly renovated “Cumberland Building” (468 Cumberland). This building is essentially fully occupied by artists from Hamilton and other communities such as the GTA.

2008 is starting off with a bang, with the opening of Steel Work Studios in April. We are anticipating another good year for film and culture in Hamilton.

So....I was walking up James N this morning for work and I met an interesting fellow for a moment or two. He said that a new blockbuster action movie was filming in Hamilton, but for the life of him couldn't remember the name.

I noticed trailers in the lot across from Lister and there are a few beside me in the Pigott building. I just hadn't seen anything here, or received an update from my secretary who reads the Spec religiously.

Can anyone shine some light on this?

Film director looking for local zombies

There is a call out in southwestern Ontario for zombies.

George Romero's new zombie movie is set to start filming on Sunday at the marina in Port Dover.

And the crew is looking for people in the area to play extras.

Those auditioning will need to be able to move like a zombie, with slow speed and no co-ordination.

About 40 extras will be needed and auditions will begin today at the St. Paul's Anglican Church at 4 p.m.

The shooting wraps up October 2nd

Couple of things that sometimes happens with the movie listings over at imdb.com if the movie gets shot both in Toronto and Hamilton sometimes they will only include the one city when listing where it was shot and they choose the one over the other because that is where the production office for that film was but I typed in the name of the film on their search engine and did not get a result for it.

I was the one that created that article there on wikipedia. That listing is not a complete one. Just the more notable ones are listed there in that article.

I remember that movie Haley's Gift. I was in the 8th grade in elementary school and I remember the librarian mentioning it so I watched it. This was early 1978 so it was likely produced in 1977 (as I think it was a new production), if that's any help.

I can understand why they do so much filming around here when we have just about every style of housing etc here.

As much as I'd like to agree with you here as to why they like to shoot here, yes we do have the locations and the architecture but the bottom line for these film production companies is the bottom line.

Hamilton benefits in two ways in that one, we are close enough to Toronto, the film hub of Ontario, that a lot of the spill-over work from there spills into Hamilton and yet at the same time we are just far enough away from Toronto and outside the Toronto film zone that extra tax breaks start to kick in for them when they choose to shoot here in Hamilton from the Ontario government.

The Ontario government recognizes that Toronto is the film hub of the province so they offer film companies extra tax breaks if they film outside of Toronto to encourage filming to other parts of the province. Hamilton lucks out big-time in that we lie just outside the Toronto film zone.

When a production company looks to cash in on these extra tax breaks they don't have to have the production office based out of Hamilton. They can have the production office based out of Toronto and have most of the filming done there too as long as they get a percentage of it done here in Hamilton then they qualify. I'm not too sure the exact percentage right now that it has to be but it could be as low as 33% of the shoot done here in Hamilton.

If an Internatinal/ American film company shoots here in Hamilton they get 6% more tax break compared to what they would get shooting in Toronto. The numbers are even better for home grown, Canadian film companies. They get 10% more shooting here in Hamilton compared to Toronto and this is why all the domestic work is being shot here in Hamilton. Whereas Toronto in a lot of cases gets to double as New York, Chicago and L.A. on the big screen Hamilton on the other hand gets to double as Toronto in a lot of domestic films.

The Toronto film folks are not too happy to see all the domestic work shot here in Hamilton but those extra tax incentives are doing what they originally were set out to do and that is to encourage filming to other parts of the province outside of Toronto.

Last season TV/ film industry was a $1-Billion industry here in Ontario and 40% of that was right here in Hamilton, Ontario.

Yes architecture is one of many reasons they film here as you mentioned. :)

They tried for the studio but it didn't go over well unfortunately. Now the building sits empty.

.....a film studio in Hamilton is long overdue....a film studio in Hamilton would do extremely well, with the right people at the helm.

Actually MsMe......the location was a great one when you consider just how many empty factory and warehouse buildings that we have sitting in our industrial north-end that could easily be transformed into film studios...The location was not the problem.

Gritty look of Hamilton in winter perfect setting for new film 'Real Time'

TORONTO — When Randall Cole originally wrote the script for "Real Time," he didn't know he'd end up shooting his movie in Hamilton, Ont.

But the gritty, bleak look of Steeltown at winter's end ultimately provided the perfect backdrop for the film, which tells the story of a hitman (Randy Quaid) who is out to kill a young gambler (Jay Baruchel) but grants him one final hour to get his life in order.

"(In) Hamilton you can sort of go from that dirty core and then ... an hour later be in someplace completely different. You see the good, the bad and the ugly," said Cole, who originally envisioned a Toronto shoot for "Real Time."

"I didn't see it as a pretty film, I wanted it ugly-pretty, which is how (Baruchel's character) is seeing the world."

Hamilton is only referenced as "The Hammer" in the movie, but anyone vaguely familiar with the southern Ontario city will find it instantly recognizable onscreen. Overall, the film seems to flaunt its Canadian pedigree, featuring Canuck currency, a flag, and a Tragically Hip song over the closing credits.

The story plays out as Baruchel's character, Andy, spends his final 60 minutes driving around looking for a hooker, seeking revenge on a former boss and searching for old toys at his grandmother's house.

Throughout, Quaid's character, Reuban, questions Andy about his past choices and the clock ticks down as a soundtrack of classic rock hits plays on the car stereo.

Cole, who directed the movie, chose the songs after fiddling around with a score, which he ultimately abandoned, deciding it would take away from the "reality" of "Real Time."

"I knew it was an option to have the car radio playing," he said. "(The songs) just kind of kept the pace up a little. It felt like the kind of stuff that would be playing in the car of a guy that age. Kind of 'dad music."'

The film takes place in real time (the title, of course, is a play on that, as well as a suggestion that it's time for Baruchel's character to "get real," said Cole). Snagging Baruchel has turned out to be a coup, as the Montreal-raised actor has seen his star rise in recent months with roles in "Pineapple Express" and "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist."

Cole says he nabbed Quaid by writing him a letter.

He pitched "Real Time" as a reversal of the 1973 Hal Ashby movie "The Last Detail," which dealt with similar themes but featured Quaid as the younger man.

The Toronto-based Cole, who studied filmmaking at Montreal's Concordia University and later at the Canadian Film Centre," says the veteran actor liked his 2002 directorial debut, "19 Months," as well as the parallels to the Ashby film.

The relationship between the two characters evolves throughout the film, culminating in a surprise ending. But one thing Cole didn't want viewers to think was that Quaid's character was Andy's long-lost father.

The Texas-raised actor adopts an Australian accent for the film, a device Cole hoped would dispel that notion.

"A lot of people kept saying they were expecting 'The Empire Strikes Back' kind of thing where he admitted he was his father," says Cole.

"I just wanted to get that idea out of the way."

"Real Time" opens Friday in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

Hey Steeltown,

Thanks for that post. Can't believe a movie like that where Hamilton gets all sorts of exposure isn't opening up in at least one location here in Hamilton. What's with that? They should have a red carpet gala here in town on opening night with the actors in attendance.

Yeah guys, I get it, I meant more like a movie that uses actual shots of the city and doesn't cover them up to make it look like something else. I know I left that part out. In that Solar Attack thing, you can clearly see the first skyway bridge and the CIBC buildings and Gore Park being blown up, but it's first class cheese. I'm sure these movies exist but I was also being somewhat facetious too.

Millstone, is there a reason you're concentrating on that aspect of movies made in Hamilton?

I understand at least a little, I think -- about why you're asking...

In my mind it has always been the economic benefits to the city that make the film industry important, however.

I want to know your thoughts though.. why is this an important factor for you?
