MODs, I am right now editing the thread, so dont delete it thinking its a thread without any pic or info... (finished part 1 (south and center-west). Tomorrow I will add more)

Hello, as some of you may already know, Brazil was officially announced by FIFA to host the 2014 World Cup.

Brazil already hosted it in 1950, and back then, it build Maracanã, at the time, the most modern and biggest stadium ever in the world.

The final match between Brazil and Uruguay had (as far as I know) a world wide record attendance to this day for stadiums, of 200 thousand people.

Unlike rich Europe, where new stadiums are always being built or renovated, in Brazil money is more scarce, so most stadiums being used today in Brazil are old and do not fully fit FIFA standarts. So, many stadiums will have to be renovated specially to the World Cup, and some will be built from scratch.

On the other hand, you could say most brazilian clubs were WAITING for a reason to update their stadiums, and now they have a reason.

I will be updating this thread from time to time. I will divide it by the host cities. I will include pictures of the host cities, pictures of the current stadiums, and pictures and videos of the stadium proposals/projects.

Since the host cities are not decided yet, in the beginning of the thread, some cities that may not host matches may appear. Also, projects may change with time. In that case, I will leave the old projects pics, but will edit to give enphasis to the final project.

Remember that some cities have several clubs and some also have municipal stadiums, so a city may have several projects, but in the end ONLY ONE STADIUM PER CITY WILL BE CHOSEN.

Arena Monumental
Existing: No
Property: Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense
Finished: 2011
Actual Capacity: -
Project Capacity: 55k

Brief Description: Grêmio already has an stadium for 50k people (current capacity, once it was 70k) in the Azenha neighborhood. The stadium is from the 50s and is located in the middle of the city. Access to the stadium is complicated in the area. There have been plans since 2006 for the building of a new modern football arena. Grêmio hired Amsterdam Arena Advisory to conduct viability studies, projects, etc. The construction of the new stadium is set to start in 2008, even if the Beira Rio stadium is chosen for the World Cup. The Arena Monumental will be located in the north of the city, on the intersection of two of the main roads in the entire country, BR-116 and BR-101 (both cut most of Brazil, from south to north, parallel to each other, they just cross each other in Porto Alegre). Not only that, but its also along BR-290, a road that goes west in the direction of Argentina/Uruguay, as well as its only 1km away from the international airport and subway line.

4 Projects were presented to Grêmio, only one was released to the public so far

********** Curitiba **********

Kyocera Arena
Existing: Yes
Property: Clube Atlético Paranaense
Finished: partialy
Actual Capacity: 30k
Project Capacity: 45k

Brief Description: this is one of the few modern stadiums in Brazil. Atl. Paranaense demolished its old stadium and inaugurated the new one in 1997. Kyocera (japanese cell phone maker) bought the naming rights in 2005. The stadium was partially finishes because there was a school in the nearby terrain and its owners rooted for the other Curitiba team. After years of negotiation, Atl Paranaense finally bought the school and demolished it, and the rest of the stadium construction has already started.

********** Brasilia **********

Mané Garrincha Stadium
Existing: Yes
Property: Municipality
Finished: 1974
Actual Capacity: 41k
Project Capacity: 75k

Brief Description: this stadium was never finished, mainly because Brasilia doesnt have any big club, specially at the time when it was built, when Brasilia total population was still very small (city itself founded in the 60s). The original design would have those higher stands circulating the entire pitch, and total capacity would be around 100 thousand. Only one section of the stands was ever finished.
The current stadium will be DEMOLISHED and a new one will be built for the 2014 World Cup.

Curitiba has a 2nd proposal. It is to demolish the city (or state?) owned Pinheirão, which is just like the Brasilia stadium. Planned for 60,000+ but only one major stand was built, and it has current capacity of 35,000. It would be knocked down and a new municipal stadium would go there, slightly larger than the Atletico Stadium, and more neutral.

Congrats to Brazil. It should be fun watching Brazil host the WC and show of its cities and football culture.

When will the final decision for which citiy's and what stadiums take place? Is there a firm date on when the decision will be?

No, they have their own stadium, Couto Pereira I think its called. Its from the 1930s.

The stadium used for the 1950 world cup is used by Parana Clube, and only holds 20,000.
