Metal slabs crash down on Ottawa worker (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2007/10/25/ot-falling-platforms-071025.html)

Last Updated: Thursday, October 25, 2007 | 5:10 PM ET

CBC News (http://www.cbc.ca/news/credit.html)

A man is in serious condition in hospital after several large metal platforms fell on top of him in a construction pit several storeys deep.

The 27-year-old man suffered serious head and chest injuries in the incident at Besserer and Cumberland streets in Ottawa's Sandy Hill neighbourhood around 1:30 p.m., said an Ottawa Paramedic Service news release.http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/photos/2007/10/25/ot-rescue2-071025.jpg
It took rescuers about an hour to lift the injured man out of the construction pit.
(CBC) The Ministry of Labour has launched an investigation into the case.

The worker had been in a 10-metre deep pit excavated for the basement of a condominium building under construction.

A crane had placed the platforms on a surface about three metres above the man's head, but they shifted and fell.
He was knocked unconscious and pinned underneath.

Kim Ayotte, chief of special operations for Ottawa's fire department, said the platforms had been removed by the time rescuers arrived.

"It was a matter of getting him out of the pit," he said. "The only way out for the workers is through a ladder system."

Over the course of an hour, the fire department's technical rescue team strapped the man to large tray and hoisted him out of the pit using high-angle rope techniques. By the time he was sent to hospital, he was able to talk to rescue workers.

"Hopefully, he'll be fine," Ayotte added.

In June, a wall of the pit at the same construction site gave way, causing a landslide that sent a car parked on a nearby street plunging down into the hole.

Despite Thursday's incident and one last Friday in which a worker was rescued from beneath the rubble of a building that partially collapsed in downtown Ottawa, Ayotte said rescues requiring the fire department's special teams usually take place only twice a year.

Who are the companies doing the excavation and construction for the Galleria? Do they have a lot of experience here in Ottawa?

Well it's about time that this project is moving at a good clip, normally it should have been topped out for quite a while.

Not as God-awful as I have been fearing it would be. The photos make the cornice seem very small for the scale of the tower, but that finished window is not terrible.

I have a decent view of this building from my office at NDHQ...it will be cool to watch the 2nd tower rise near it in the future. Are they going to build the 2nd one taller, or the same height?

For sure, although I can't see it going ahead any time soon. Richcraft has two other sites in the downtown area with Development Charge exemptions which may soon end, so one or both of those would probably proceed quicker to avoid the DC's. Besides, who knows how the market will fare over the next little while.

This exterior of this building has turned out to be a real disappointment, IMO. It has very little character.

The original renderings showed it having a very large cornice the whole way around the roofline, not the wimpy little brackets they have now. It also had a nice two-story tall window effect at the top two floors, and instead they now have those awful green bands dividing the upper and lower levels of glass. Ick.

Even the large medallion up at the roofline doesn't stand-out at all, like it did in the renderings.

Does anybody have those early drawings (it's not the one in post #1)?

LOL... except notice that the second one to the right has been stolen?

Approximately 15 unsold units, mostly the more expensive 2 bedroom - 2 bath + den on the backside of the building. The other remaining units have left over granite from the elevator lobbies installed as floor tile. Looks a little too much like common elements IMO.

Overall the Galleria is a well built building with a much higher finish level than what you get from Claridge but design leaves some to be desired. No garbage room on the first floor, kitchens so small you could not open the originally spec'd appliances, you can not get to the parking garage by stairs from either the lobby or first floor, and you can not get to P4 by elevator. You must go to P3 and walk down the ramp... which is also where ALL the lockers are located. And yes, they too had floods. Several majour ones early on in the finishing stages (due to freezing pipes) and several minor ones after move in. I know the kitchens will be addressed in Galleria II but I'm not sure about the other issues yet.
