I do like the name Pinnacle...
my only negative thing is that I had a gut reaction of "well if a 30 story building is the pinnacle, then by default 30 stories is the highest building that will ever be in Halifax"! :-)

Probably this will be the tallest that will be built in many years (unless it turns out very well and it causes people's attitudes towards tall buildings change). However, I added Harbour Pinnacle to make it a bit more specific (maybe it could be Harbour Point Pinnacle). We need more of these :skyscraper:

It seems to fit a 30 plus story building better. However, if it is being used for a nearby building then I guess it rules it out. It has been used for buildings in other cities so it isn't really a unique name. (Coming up with a unique name will likely be impossible).

Are there renderings for the project at the Royal Bank parking lot?

There is a drawing on the diagrams database here. (http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?buildingID=64354)

I think I have the full-sized rendering of the Sentinel somewhere... If I remember correctly the project was abandoned because the site would have required extensive remediation. Unfortunate.

I wasn't aware that there had been a proposal on the Royal Bank parcel - it looks pretty interesting and certainly bigger and better than what's there now. Was there a specific reason why it didn't go ahead?

Hmm.. not sure where I put it. A few weeks ago I found a bunch of old development stuff I had saved from around 2003-2006. I'll probably make a thread of old projects at some point.

I made a thread for that stuff a while ago. :)

There were a few renderings of the sentinal floating around. This is the only one I could find at the moment.

There was also this proposal from before my time. I'm guessing it was from the late 90s

This block is owned by the WDC, was it the case back with this proposal? Or did this happen after the contamination was found?

Interesting, from their website: (https://www.my-waterfront.ca/development/project-highlights)

"WDC-1 Conceptual Design (Dartmouth)
WDCL is working on development alternatives for this vacant property, which is located between King Street, Alderney Drive and Prince Street in downtown Dartmouth."

The rendering I have is a bit larger and hand-drawn (renderings have gotten much more sophisticated!).

It really is a shame that it was never built. It would have worked well with King's Wharf and the ground-floor townhouses were a good design element.

The groundfloor townhouses give it a human scale. One of the best ways to make people think a building isn't as tall as it is: break up the massing. Its a trick I've used a lot and it seems to work well - trillium was a great example.

I agree though, shame this didn't get built - but there is always the future. With the possibility of the brightwood viewplane being removed; the site could go even higher (potentially).

Height? I find this development is moving so slow! I understand the construction process, parking and base levels do take longer but I've been following this for some time and there has not been moving very fast at all. Are there any holds up that anyone knows about?

DigitalNinja
Feb 5, 2011, 2:06 PM
I think that it's because they are working on both buildings at once. And they are sharing a crane and probably crews between them. Where the parking structure is the first 2 floors of this building it does take some time. Plus working in the winter is always slower than in the summer.

Seems to me it's going to start showing progress a lot more regularly from now on. The main floor plate will be poured for the Anchorage and then it's straight on up. The Keelson will follow close behind. There should be rather drastic progress by the end of summer.

The support columns for the second floor are in for both buildings I believe, but they have not started on the second floors yet. Things seem to be progressing fairly slow on this, but you also have to keep in mind that their working on two buildings at once with one crane.

Anyone else notice the public parking lot wedged between the King's Wharf's driveway, the Canal and the trail bridge NEVER has cars in it? A sign on site claims its monthly parking only yet even in the middle of afternoon on a weekday there isn't a single car on the lot (excluding me blocking the entrance for the photo above :P).

According to the SSP Database, Admiralty Place is 13 stories, meaning these twins will be roughly the same height, possibly a bit taller.

Its sad that 13 or 14 stories is considered a tower, I can't wait for the signature tower.

Good to see how high up the road bed is, I can't see that flooding in a storm so easily. I watch this being built from work at NSCC and think about how far Dartmouth has come since I was a kid growing up there. This development will really change downtown, for sure.

Anyone else remember "Starvin Marvins General Store"? :)

I think they will go fast now that they are out of the garage and that the weather is getting better. Also they are building two buildings at once, so that will slow things down. I've noticed they've been focusing more on the condo building as of late, but this weekend they have started setting up the flying formwork on the apartment buildings. Omega, the formwork company are also doing the RCMP building in Burnside, so they might be spread thin because that building has large floor plates. Now that the form is mostly up for that, maybe they can put more guys and materials on King's Wharf.

I was thinking the same thing worldly.

I wonder what the time frame is for the day-lighting.

The effect would help with the Portland\Prince Albert\Alderney\Canal street car-mash.

Does anybody have any idea what might go on the other side of the Canal entrance? It was the opportunity to compliment Kings Wharf, in a way that would magnify the effect it has for the Dartmouth Waterfront.

The daylighting plan at the corner of Prince Albert is part of the proposal for developing the Irish town Road properties. As far as I know they have not come back with any new renderings of those buildings after the first public meeting. The daylighting plan looked good.

I was speaking with one of the sales people the other day at the Entrepreneurship expo and she said that they are going to be concentrating mainly on the Keelson until it tops out around the end of June, early July and then construction will go back to the Anchorage. She also said that the road is pretty much at grade now and should be paved within the coming weeks. And one last tid bit. Piling for the next slew of buildings should be done before these ones are occupied, so sometime within the next year and a half or so.

Seems that the parking structure is not fully enclosed on the Anchorage. I'd bet they have to do that before they have the road at grade all the way. Maybe I'm wrong.

If the full project goes ahead (tower et al) this is going to look fantastic from Citadel Hill.

Signature tower is essential... it will define the skyline of Dartmouth.

Hopefully the signature tower will look like the renderings and not like Horizon Crt.

It is too bad that the developers didn't spend a bit more money to put in larger windows. The small windows really look out of scale with the Horizon tower.

Considering that a big part of the reason why this project got such a glowing approval was that it would correct the overwhelming failure of the Dartmouth MPS's population projections for DT Dartmouth - I highly doubt that the iconic tower wouldn't go forward. If anything, I suspect there would be a significant discussion from the planning dept if it didn't go through.

The whole point of this project was that the Dartmouth MPS population projections for Downtown Dartmouth figured the population would be around 5000 (as I recall) and they were actually 10% of that (may 25% at the most). So they want more people there...

Thanks for the photos. Those are really coming along.

I love the combination of the canal and the new buildings. The canal could become a great focal point for the neighbourhood. Too bad there's already some botched development nearby.

Thanks for the update DJ! It looks fantastic so far... I feel as though KW gives Dartmouth a new identity, almost similar to the impact of Purdy's for Halifax.

Depending on the signature tower and the other proposals for Dartmouth, there could be a serious skyline rivalry here.

Factoring in what's going on in Bedford as well, HRM will be much improved.

The skyline is one thing but I hope this actually ties in to the rest of the downtown area. Hopefully there will be good pedestrian connections across the highway-like Alderney Drive and railway tracks.

Ideally there will be some future interesting/useful development along King Street with new retail and more offerings on Portland Street to give the new residents of King's Wharf a reason to visit the rest of the neighbourhood.

I think there were plans for a small grocery store in this development. Hopefully it's a decent one that people can use for most of their day-to-day shopping. That would be a huge asset to the area. Living within a couple blocks' walk of a grocery store is great, as is the short ferry commute to the downtown.

King's Wharf is very noticeable from the waterfront:

It's just over half of its current height right now.

Here are some pics I grabbed this morning.

There is a patch of ground that they have seeded with grass. Looks somewhat odd within the construction site. I wonder if they are testing grasses for the roof of the podium of the main tower?

Nice! If/when the iconic tower gets built, Dartmouth may be in a position to claim a better skyline than Halifax.

Actually from the angle of that photo the iconic tower would block out the rest of DD. :haha:

And don't worry much about skyline competition Bedford is going to sneak up and steal the spotlight in a decade of so. ;)
