Ottawa has lots of apartment blocks very close to downtown, and along the linear development of stores that extend south of downtown. You are right though, the city is lively, and has a nice mix of professionals and students.
Although I don't live there I visit quite often, and always have a good time.

The most detailed views of Ottawa I´ve ever had.

By the way, do canadians like more to live close to downtown and in appartment block than in USA, because the canadians cities I´ve seen have many more residential appartment blocks (with balcons) than the average US cities.

It´s kind of what we have in big latin american cities like mine, where many people live in high residential buildings ( I live in yhe 12nd. floor in a high building) and our residential bulidings use to have a balcon (this is specially desired by brazilians, since our climate is warm and the balcons are the coolest places of the appartments).
