Those renovations make a huge difference. If a few of the brick ones were restored (presumably a lot more costly than putting up new siding) they would look very good. Downtown Sydney reminds me a bit of downtown Dartmouth. Both have some nice features but no particular focus and no really exceptional architecture like some other towns around the province. It's actually kind of surprising that Sydney doesn't have more.

Another interesting point to mention is that Sydney is almost a twin of Nanaimo, BC.

With the exception of the Northenders trying to quash anything that might block their "view", there hasn't really been a lot of focus on preserving the historic until recently. Just as long as they don't go all "Heritage Trust" on us, in our time of rebound, it shouldn't be too bad. There are some buildings I'd personally fight to save. This Spanish Gates fiasco has me worried that the Northenders are getting tips from the Heritage Trust in Halifax...they keep talking about neighbouring historic facades when the only building which could be considered historic on a neighbouring property is the Yacht Club (which has Delta on the other side).
