TransCanada building. Tied for 4th tallest in Calgary with Canterra. It was the last major office building to be built in Calgary around the turn of the century. Now there are about a dozen office buildings in various stages of construction with plenty more planned. Two of the projects are in the billion dollar range.

Huge downpour, June 5, Elbow Drive. It was way worse elsewhere but I was stranded on high ground at home, thankfully!
The mud in the foreground is our driveway and the shrub floating away was sacrificed for GE5 (Glenmore Elbow 5 Street) road widening. It took 13 months, but we now have a paved driveway, a new sprinkler system, and a new front lawn.

Great pics...

I lived in Calgary for a year in 97...I bet there have been a lot of changes on the skyline since then. It amazes me how much office space is in that city. I live in Indy now and the office market is relatively stagnant, with most growth on the northern suburbs. Our tallest is taller than your tallest but our skyline pales in comparison and office bulk.

HI thanks for having a look. I find it hard to believe that 1997 was 10 years ago already!!!
I don't think you would notice much difference in the skyline as nothing taller than PetroCanada has ever been built and it went up in the early 1980s. You would notice a few new buildings here and there, and lots of construction going on. I think the biggest change you would see would be on the outskirts as there are entire areas of the city that are new since then.
The skyline should change by 2010 when the 58 storey Foster designed The Bow tower is built. I'm hoping that since EXXON/Mobil-Imperial Oil has moved their head office to Calgary from Toronto and are scattered in several downtown buildings, they might want to build something higher than The Bow.
They own most of the block between 5 & 6 Avenues SW at 4 Street and they just bought the alley from the City.

Yeah I've seen a couple of different databases with Calgary highrise construction. I think the one here on skyscraperpage has 40+ UC and the one on emporis had like 22. Whatever the current number, it's phenomenal for a city of just over a million.

Calgary may be sprawling out somewhat...but at least they're subdivision lots are small enough, like a lot of cities in western NA, to allow for a short trip to the closest LRT station; then ride to downtown. That's what my dad used to do. Good planning on their part to keep most of the offices downtown. In Indy, only about 1/3 of office space is downtown...jobs dispersed, less use of public transit or light rail capabilities.

is there any end to calgary's growth? well done.

The boom is just gearing up! It should be quite something to see in a couple of years if everything in the planning pipeline comes to fruition and if the price of oil keeps going up. There are quite a few construction projects that I haven't managed to get around to taking pics of yet, so stay tuned for more.
Thanks for having a look and leaving a comment.

How's the ring road progressing in Calgary?

I'm amazed how much office space is downtown. How did they keep it all there? Here in Indianapolis around 1/3 of it is dt and the market there is somewhat stagnant, though may see future growth.

What an impressive skyline for a metro of around 1 million.

The NW ring road is partially built and the rest is under construction between Highway 2 to Edmonton and Highway 1 to Banff. From Highway 2 east to the TransCanada is getting ramped up to construction phase.
The SW ring road through the Tsu'u Tina Nation is still in the negotiation stage between the Province and the Nation.
I think the historical reason for such a concentration of offices downtown is so all the oilmen could walk to the Petroleum Club for lunch with their buddies.
The City would like to see more offices and employment in outer areas near C Train stations, so that not everybody has to go downtown.
Thanks for your interest in my pics Babbage and for leaving some comments!
You will have to come back to Calgary for a visit sometime.

14 Street NW looking SW. It looks like a major thoroughfare that goes through the city right? No, it stops south of downtown, but it starts up again at the Rockyview Hospital which is the large structure in the far distance, however it ends again at Fish Creek Park, but it starts up again with a name instead of a number on the south side of Fish Creek Park.
Most major streets in Calgary are dead ends, the exceptions are Deerfoot Trail which is the only road without traffic lights and 16 Avenue which is supposed to be the TransCanada Highway and it has plenty of traffic lights.

I LOVE Calgary.
Whenever I tell someone I'm born in Alberta I say just north of Calgary... even though I mean Red Deer lol.
I liked your Beat Niq picture the best.

Also, when I was last in Calgary in 05, I was surprised as to how many drug users and homeless people were on Stephens Ave. Is it still that bad?

Hey thanks everyone for your wonderful comments.

Yes Wislaw, I think the drugs and homeless problems have gotten worse.
Of course the 2 issues go hand in hand and there has been a boom at that end of the economy too. I don't have any easy answers to offer, but something has to be done.
I'm glad you liked the Beat Niq pic! That was a lucky timing to see the Rolls parked out front.
