gritty sexy fun. great shots. what's the ship moored there? that makes me really want to visit, as Hamilton looks like my kinda place from your pics, and a historic warship makes it even more so.

do you mind if i use this pic in an upcoming thread i plan to do for the architecture section on art moderne? and do you have info on this building (name, year built, use, etc...?)

I think it was the Hamilton Hydro or Electric Company building. It was originally a 3-storey building but they added another 3 floors in the 60s. If you look closely at the curvy bit, you can see a slight difference in the stone. The old part ended with the first course of stone above the window. They did a really nice job and it has long been a favourite of mine. The TH&B Railway station (now GO Transit station) is another stunning moderne building in Hamilton.

Make sure you venture off the beaten path while your here, that's where all the good stuff is.

How many people does the steel industry employ in the Hammer?

I'm not sure, they employ a lot but not as many as Hamilton Health Sciences. One of the other Hamilton forumers probably knows.

The ship is H.M.C.S. Haida, a WWII Destroyer. I believe it's the last remaining destroyer of that era and is a National Historic Site which you can tour.

Also, you can use that pic for your thread. It's the Hamilton Hydro building, as Jaborandi said, but I don't know any other info about it. Jaborandi: Interesting stuff about the addition of 3 storeys, I had no idea.
I do have a picture of the art moderne TH&B station, but the dude's pic is better I think:
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k28/segaert/finale/00104.jpg

You can use this picture if you want too. It's still in use as a train and bus station and now called the Hamilton GO Centre. Formerly known as the Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo Railway Station, it was built during 1931-33 and the architects were Fellheim & Wagner from New York.

if you look around the city, some of the nicest buildings are hydro-electric buildings.
the head office shown above, the nice brick one on Hughson north of King William, the Staircase Cafe Theatre, a beauty one at King and Sherman area etc..... they're all over the place. they used to build great buildings.
