View Full Version : Winnipeg lazy prairie town afternoon

Aug 24, 2007, 3:23 AM
Winnipeg time again for me this month. My stay reminded me of the once-famous song by The Bells:

It’s a moody Manitoba morning
Nothing’s really happening, it never does...

It’s a moody Manitoba morning
And I like it that way
It’s a long and kind of gentle
Lazy prairie town afternoon
The sky is high
I can feel the grass growing
From yesterday’s rain
Sun’s a glowing and so am I...

Actually the sun wasn't a glowing in all these photographs but that's life. Enough words. On to the highlight reel.

Not so great

Now to an excruciatingly boring part of the southwestern part of downtown.

Winnipeg Convention Centre:

Parking is plentiful here:

The federal government's Stanley Knowles Building, which I haven't really noticed before -- not bad:

South from Portage and Main

Enough of that. Maybe the southeast part will be better.

Here are some people doing their best to wash the Richardson Building. For skyscraper fans, this is a skyscraper:

The Bank of Nova Scotia building, Portage and Garry:

A multi-year restoration project is beginning with terra cotta repair and replacement:

It is reflected in the glass of Portage Place across the street, a not entirely successful 80s attempt at urban renewal:

It dwarfs Holt Renfrew which of course isn't actually Holt Renfrew anymore but a jeans store:

Main Street near Logan -- the worst part of Skid Row is starting to look pretty decent again:

The southern part of downtown was once full of substantial brick homes, which mostly made way for the dozens of apartment buildings that now dominate the area. A few of the old Ontario-style houses are still scattered about, though:

61 Carlton Street (Dalnavert Museum, home of Hugh John Macdonald, built 1895):

Wow, I'm so jealous!
Winnipeg has done an amazing job at preserving their historical/architectural masterpieces!
In Hamilton we tend to tear them down almost immediately after a tennant leaves!

Awesome Job!

it is always pleasurable, andrew, to virtually walk around with you in downtown winnipeg while wishing it was 1914.

andy you truly are a brilliant photographer. I want to look at your pics of other cities too.
my heart beats looking at these ones tho, since this is my home town.
these pics remind me that the potential is all there for our city, all we need now are more people living downtown to fill the streets and better support the urban amenities. I have some hopes pinned on an upcoming downtown housing plan that's rumoured to be emerging from the planning department this fall.

Thank you, Adrian. I don't mind if you post from that day unless there are embarrassing pictures of me.

Michael it is always a pleasure to have you along -- it can be 1914 again if we believe it is.

Thanks for the other comments as well. I don't really take many pictures of other cities although perhaps I'll do a Toronto thread again one of these days.

This is your best photo thread yet, Andy, and certainly one of the best Winnipeg threads I've seen.

It was nice to see some seldom-covered parts of town--including North Main st--but of course, it is impossible for the Exchange District to not outshine other areas.

Thanks, guys. It's kind of funny how with photographs you start noticing things you've not noticed before -- e.g. I was just looking at the brickwork in the attic window of the Masonic Temple and remarkably it is in the form of a sunburst. Hmm. It would have taken a lot of work to do that, I thought.

But it's meant to be a representation of the Masonic all-seeing eye symbol, with the round window being the eye. An example is on the U.S. $1 note:

More examples on this site:

Also the eye image is framed in a pentagon, another bit of Masonic symbolism.

Great tour, Andy! I'm surprised by the fantastic building envelope within many areas of Downtown Winnipeg -- namely the Exchange District. Also, some of the apartment blocks that you posted later in your thread wouldn't look out of place in Centretown here in Ottawa.

Very well done. An enviable mix of new, used, abused, and unused architecture which gives insight into the Winnipeg perspective. I also enjoyed the cynical commentary ;)

Thanks for the pics Andy, I'm heading home to Winnipeg right after the Labor day game in Regina and this was a great preview. I always love driving back to the peg and I always have the same familiar feeling when I pass under the Perimeter, that simply your heart always knows when it is home.:)

That looks like the downtown of a healthy U.S. metro with a population of about 3.0 Million.

Say, what is the metro population of Winnipeg?

Do you know the population with a 50 mile radius? I believe it is quite a bit more with places like Selkirk, Stienbach, Ste. Anne etc ...

I'm no expert, but from the University of Manitoba (the most acclaimed of Manitoba's educational institutes, based in Winnipeg) has lobbied the Metro in some articles (albeit not published in journals) in and around 750,000, using a tight measurement, including Selkirk, of which I would argue/imagine many Winnipeger's already think of as part of the metro? (even if Stats Can doesn't).

Thus, from a Conservative to more Liberal guess, it's probably safe to say the Capital Region or area assumed by the parameters listed above, which is what I would certainly call the Winnipeg metro, to be between 750,000 to 800,000 people. Personally, I would argue that 800,000 is excessive, and I'd be more inclined to state 750,000.

Using the American standard of metro's, an American forumer had recently stated that Winnipeg is roughly the same size as Jacksonville, Florida. I can't ascertain the validity, but who knows?

Great photos, Andy! Thank you so much for posting them!

I'm a resident of 74 Carlton (The Ellesmere) and was happy to see the building included.

I'm wondering if anyone else has any photos of my building?? We (us residents) are working on restoring it right now as we absolutely love the place.

Any ideas on the history of the building, as well?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks very much,

Tim

Thanks for the bump @alittle1. This thread looks familiar because I looked at it in 2007 and never posted, but Winnipeg is amazing in it's urbanity for a city only around 750k. Thanks for the pics, @Andy6.
