DKR already is an awesome place to catch a football game. I'm really glad they decided to add to the north endzone. Acoustically, it should sound much louder than it currently is. Hook 'em!

So when that end is completed by the fall of 2008. What will the capacity be for the stadium with the temporary bleachers added on what I believe is the south endzone by the new scoreboard aka God(or Ad)zillatron? Also, yes, SMDHorn has been great with those pictures over the past few months.

Right now, 2007 season, with the addition of the 6400 temporary seats in the SEZ, the official capacity is 80,638. Nearly 600 more than the 2005 capacity of 80,082. However, in 2006 the capacity was 85,000+.

From Wednesday's Sports Extra in the Stateman:

Attendance during Mack Brown's era:

1997: 74,040
1998: 77,440
1999: 82,673
2000: 82,216
2001: 83,062
2002: 83,150
2003: 83,339
2004: 83,094
2005: 83,333
2006: 88,505

As you can see, since 1999, attendance has surpassed official capacity. Now in 2008, with the additions in the NEZ, the capacity could be around 92,000+. If the 6400 temporary bleachers stayed, the capacity could be 98/99,000+. And if we sell out above official capacity, with the Arkansas game, we could see the capacity reach beyond 100,000. Of course, ticket demand has to be there for the temporary bleachers to stay there.

I don't think ticket demand is really an issue. If the stadium seated 120,000, there would still be people willing to pay to get in. Additionally, UT's average gameday attendance has been at or above 104% "official capacity" for the past decade.

Nonetheless, even if there is demand, I’m not so sure UT would keep the bleachers in the SEZ after this expansion is complete – for aesthetic reasons. It would be cool if they did; solely for overall attendance purposes…

DeLoss Dodds said that if they receive around 70,000 orders for season tickets that they will keep the temporary bleachers. Now, my memory could be way, so do not take that number seriously. Just keep in mind the if there are enough orders for season tickets, the temporary bleachers stay.

The bleacher will stay... bet on that. The powers that be have eluded to that for some time, but I think there capacity will be decreased to more around the 4000 or so we saw last year. It should push the official capacity up to around 97-99,000 or so. That means for big games, the "official" attendance should be well over 100,000. I'm expecting close to 102,000 for the Arkansas game in '08. A pretty amazing figure when you consider that prior to last season, the largest attendance at a football game in the history of the state of Texas was 87,555.

Lets not forget the 'mediocre' years of the late 80s thru mid-90s (the 1990 "Shock the Nation" tour, notwithstanding). There were at least 2-3 or more games each season that were far from sell-outs (Rice, TCU, etc.). I doubt we'll see those days again during the Mack Brown era, but you never know. Fans can be fickle.

Aren't there plans in the works to fill in the south side of the stadium as well?? I could have sworn I saw renderings for a completely built out DKR a few months ago. If so I imagine the total capacity would be 125,000+

Yes... complete plans call for finishing out the south endzone similar to the North.

The south endzone is awaiting revenue goals from the games/added capacity... only a small portion of revenue is slotted to get reinvested.

I have heard the south endzone could get underway in 10-15 years so its a ways off. When complete DKR will hold between 105K and 115K.

This should put DKR at least in the top 5, if not top 3 game day stadiums in the nation... Michigan, Penn St, Tennessee, Ohio State all seat over 105K. I think next down is USC and UCLA which seat in the mid 90's for regular games... of course the Rose Bowl holds about 120K for the actual bowl... but not season games.

With the completion of the NEZ, the stadium could be the 5th largest college stadium. Of course, it would be larger(capacity) than any NFL stadium as they usually have capacities at 60-70,000. If the SEZ were to be completed, I believe DKR's capacity would easily surpass Michigan's official capacity of 107,000+.

Actually, that will be the stadium's "official" seating capacity (somewhere between 91,500 and 92,500). It's gameday attendances may actually reach 94,500 to 98,500.

According to UT's Master Plan, the stadium's seating capacity will be 115,500; once the south endzone is filled-in. If built, and compared to official stadium capacities of today, it would be the largest football stadium in North America (Michigan=107,501; Penn St.=107,282; Tennessee=104,079; and Ohio State=101,568). However, by the time DKR-TMS closes-off the south endzone, I'm pretty sure one, or more, of the aforementioned stadiums will have expanded as well.

Just an FYI: the Rose Bowl's capacity is 98,636, ot 120,000.

Well. The Longhorns are 24-21 all time I believe at Kyle Field. That's why Texas fans call it DKR East. Win the next four at Kyle, then maybe UT fans won't call it DKR East. Just like many Cowboy fans call Fed Ex field in DC, Texas Stadium East because we have a winning record there as well.

They will only add 1,000+ seats though. Anyway to add even more seats would result in massive protests as people think it would flirt with history and tradition too much.

I dont see how Tennessee could expand Neyland Stadium. There is just no room. Same thing with the Shoe.

with 115,000 or more in the United States, there are 11. The largest is Indianapolis Motor Speedway with 250,000 seats which is the largest sporting events facility in the world. The largest in Texas is Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth with 154,861.

The largest football stadium in America is Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor with 107,501. That also appears to be the largest football stadium in the world. So at total build out at 115,000, DKR Stadium would easily be the world's largest football stadium. That is insane. It would also be the world's largest sporting events stadium that is not for auto racing or horse racing.

With 115,000 tickets, I sure hope they would lower the cost. $60 is mighty expensive to see Arkie St. while relieving myself in portacans. Of course, I wouldnt be going by myself. So at least $120 for tickets, $5 for parking, $30 for a bottle of water. That is just too expensive.

That would be wild if and when they bowled off the SEZ, they put adzillatron:haha: on top of one of the endzones and then created another one of equal size in the other endzone. It would look ridiculous, but it would be wild stuff. Godzillatron is supposedly a fairly temporary structure.

Well, Texas has a winning record at your homefield. Doesn't matter if it's that close. You just have a losing record against Texas in every conceivable way whether you play in Austin or College Station. I think that deserves bragging rights.

I doubt if those are likely to go much higher than about 100k, even if bowled in, because the focus is mostly on premium seating and skyboxes, rather than many more "regular" seats.
The rumor in Tuscaloosa is that Bryant-Denny might start construction on its next expansion after the 2008 season, to be ready for the 2010 season. This would have it bowled in, with the total seating around 100,000.

I'm a Sooner and I got the joke :D

I would think the demand would be there that the bleachers would stay, I know that I am something like 4,500 on the OU season ticket waiting list of about 15,000 after the new deck opened up on the east side to push the "official" capacity to 82,112 but usually have crowds in the 84,000+ range and last years Texas Tech game (which we went to, my wife is a Tech alum) was 85,313. I would think that OU, UT, A&M and Nebraska could all do over 100,000 and will all edge their way to that mark in the future. I think the new renovations will make DKR look nicer and provide a closer in experience for those in the north end zone, should help with noise as well. We will see the other end of the stadium size spectrum this weekend when we go to the Tech-SMU game in Dallas on Monday.

This is what the OU stadium looks like after the new deck, there has been talk about closing in the south end zone more or adding a deck to the north end zone which is where my father's seats are. All I know that it has changed a bunch since I started there in 1982 and the architecture school was still in the north end of the stadium, I only had two arch. classes in the stadium as the others were scattered all over campus.

Thanks for the photo updates. I saw some pans on TV last weekend and it was hard to tell what was going on. How old am I, I remember the switch to grass in the mid-90s. Before that we could go on the field and workout anytime on the astroturf...wow. glad to see the updates.

Update as of 10-24. The NW corner has now been filled and will be ready for Saturday's game. The last third of the lower deck has begun construction and now all towers are in construction I do believe.

It was the same way at OU when I was there in the early 80's. You could get on the field pretty much anytime between football and band practice and play on the field.

^ Yeah I was fortunate to play some touch football on the turf, those were the days, my brother blew out his knee one of those games. I was always surprised they let people onto the field, it would be something to get out there again since I never realized it would surely end due to liability issues and wear and tear. Some of my friends would prefer the stadium kept it's U shape but I wait for the day they make it a monstrous bowl and then add on to the east side so it mirrors the upper deck on the west making it's capacity 150,00 on gameday!:D
