I visited the Colorado Springs, CO area last weekend with mom and shot these photos at the Air Force Academy and The Garden of the Gods.

The Cadet Chapel took five years to design and an additional four years to build. Construction began in 1959 and was completed in 1963 at a cost of $3.5 million. This cost was for the framework alone, all furnishing within the chapel were financed by members of the Air Force or by private donations. Walter Netsch’s design has 17 spires resembling a squadron of fighter jets shooting into the air.

The lower level has a Jewish Temple and a Catholic Chapel. The main level is an extremely large non-denominational chapel. There are 14 Stations of the Cross on the side walls. The marble is Italian carrera and comes from the same quarries that Michaelangelo used in his works. The small cross contained in each station is made of olive wood which comes from the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.

Garden of the Gods, Architects = the Gods. Colorado, or Spanish loose translation, “the color red” is known for Red Rocks Amphitheater just outside of Denver and a few other parks that have similar natural structures like these. Some of the rock climbers are experienced and have the necessary scaling tools, but some are called ‘scramblers’ and do it without any tools. They are usually the ones that end up needing to be rescued or just fall.

I've lived here all my life, but those red rocks will never look normal to me. It's like Mars or something...

Ahhhhhhh. I love Colorado. lol.

Nice pictures. I remember seeing the chapel from I-25 on one trip to Colorado. Interesting structure, and even from several miles away it was clearly visible off in the distance with Pike's Peak as a backdrop.

 I'll have to show my brother this thread. He rock climbs. I do too to some extent, but he's quite the climber doing a few 100 to 300 foot climbs west of Austin. Braver than I, I stick to the low stuff.

I remember seeing the signs for the Garden when I drove through there last year. How far is it from Colorado Springs.

Also, great photos, thx.

Garden of the Gods is a city park... It's in Colorado Springs city limits and is bordered by Manitou Springs, as is Red Rock Canyon to the south. I like Red Rock Canyon because it's more intimate and less touristy. It may just be because it's only been open for a couple of years. Also, Cheyenne Mountain is being converted to a state park. The Park system is still this towns best feature.

nice pics of what could very possibly be my next home. that chapel looks awesome...very, very ahead of its time. nice to see the fighters out there, too. it still seems wierd that one of my exes was in serious contention for the academy, but didn't get a slot...

Very cool chapel, and neat rock formations.
