What a fantastic city. From the marvelous geography to the sometimes brutal industrial architecture to the stellar PNC Park to meeting Albert Pujols at my hotel...

A highly enjoyable couple of days. I didn't manage to make it out to Oakland or UPitt, and I really wish I had, but downtown was more than enough to satisfy my city fix.

Few geographers consider Pittsburgh Midwestern, as most tend to follow state lines, and even fewer Pittsburghers do. Pittsburghers consider the Midwest to be somewhere else, so how can you lump us into a poorly defined region that we don't consider ourselves to be a part of? You can Google Midwest, and you'll see few descriptions that include Pittsburgh, or any other part of Pa. The Midwest is actually very poorly defined, but the biggest bones of contention vis-a-vis the Midwest are; what is the southern border, and are the Plains States Midwestern?

I'd agree with ColDay's second description, although Buffalo would be a legitimate contender for that title as well. Physically, Buffalo is very similar to the Midwestern Lake Cities, while Pittsburgh, is more of a wierd mishmash of styles.

The most eastern-like Midwest city is probably St. Louis, while of course Cleveland holds the title from a geographic standpoint.

That is actually the former Pennsylvania Station (originally Union Station). It has been an apartment building for quite some time now.

Since regions tend to gradually fade into neighboring regions, such a description usually holds some truth. Cincy and St. Louis are both Midwestern, but have more of a southern vibe than Minneapolis, which is far from the South. Conversely, Louisville, which is southern, has more in common with the Midwest than does Birmingham.
