Hey Mike, do you know of any downtown parking garages with an open top level and cool background of the skyline for doing a nighttime car photoshoot? Thanks!

TowerDistrict

You may be able to get a shot on the top level of the garage on 14th and H
Street. It'll be a little tricky as the walls are a bit tall... but the view are great.

innov8
Oct 16, 2007, 6:39 PM
Yup, that's the one I was thinking of too. There is a high point above the
walls on top that if you position the car just right, you could get a sweet
view. I would also try the garage across the street from the EPA building on
I Street and also the garage next to the current US Bank building and library.
I think the high walls around the side on the top would be a problem with
a car and it's low profile.

I would also go in on foot first to see if any of these locations work for you
before paying parking fees.

If I think of any others I'll let you know. There are some other nice locations
downtown but they are State owned garages and only State employees can park there :(

I graduated from Sacramento Country Day in 03 and took photos for the school newspaper all 4 years. Every year we had to do a story on the progress of the new campus in Folsom. Basically, in 2001 GenCorp Inc. gave us 80 acres, which sits in the 30,000 acres-plus of oak grasslands that run south of Highway 50 from Folsom to Rancho Murieta.

In any case, this is a picture I took back in 2001, and, well, it hasn't changed much since then. I have much better photos, but I'm bored at home, and this was the only one of Sacramento I could find. I'll keep digging.

Send them down to South Sac to "deal with" all the gangs down there! Then, rebuild all the mental institutions (under a differnent name to be more humane) and put the homeless in there! Sacramento (and most cities) would be a better place. :)

From what I have heard, the majority of chronic homeless in Sacramento are mentally ill. Also, someone recently pointed out that we spend all this money to house and feed and care for criminals; but, we don't spend the money necessary to take care of the homeless...especially those that have mental illnesses. It's a sad commentary on our society. We spend how many millions more trying to teach people a lesson than we spend for those who may not be able to take care of themselves?

wburg
Dec 24, 2007, 12:32 AM
neuhickman, if what you are advocating is providing housing for the homeless (not locked institutions, but housing) then I take back my remark. The solution to homelessness IS housing, but that's a solution that the free market can't provide.

Many of the chronic homeless are mentally ill, but "chronic homeless" only applies to about 10% of the homeless population: people who have been homeless a year or more, or who become homeless several times in a period of a couple of years.

"Housing first" programs target the chronic homeless by getting them into housing before addressing other problems--because, once the person is housed, those problems become MUCH easier to treat. Any problem a person might have becomes much worse on the street. As I have mentioned here before, in other cities (like Denver) they have found that providing "housing first" programs and case-management followup actually costs a great deal less than the emergency services (jail, emergency rooms, psych wards, detox) that they would have used if still on the street. Add to the fiscal benefit the community benefit of fewer homeless on the street and the social benefit of helping some of society's most miserable become, at least, more stable (and sometimes, back into productive members of society) and you've got a real option--a solution that works. It's not particularly cheap, and it's not particularly easy, but homelessness isn't a simple problem and it doesn't come with a simple answer.

Enough moralizing! More Sacramento photos!

I was helping a friend from work paint some houses a week or 2 ago and noticed that there are some awesome views of the skyline, and the entire valley from the cameron park el dorado hills area. I would of taken a picture but all I had was my camera phone. Somebody with a really bad ass camera could take a shot and it would be amazing. Just go to one of the side roads off 50 and take some, and some of the deeper roads into the hills in the area.

All you have to do is go up into Empire Ranch in Folsom and you get some great views of the skyline AND if you look South, you can see Rancho Seco.

I just love this old "business district" postcard shot:

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/9708/sacoldphoto2qc0.jpg
It shows a lot of the old West End, and a lot of the old city fabric wiped away by redevelopment and changes in transportation. Sacramento's waterfront was heavily industrial, with everything from grain mills to canneries to lumber mills to ironwork, and three different railroads running alongside the river.

If you note the building on M Street just past the Tower Bridge (which identifies this shot as post-1935) to the right, you'll notice it has a "slice" taken out of it. This is because the Sacramento Northern tracks off the bridge used to swing to the right between Front and Second Street into the SN's original freight station. This station was destroyed in a fire, and the brick freight station (visible in the photo just above that building with the slice) received cars via a sharp S-curve of track at Second and N Street (you can see the boxcars in front of the station.) The building was abandoned in favor of the Western Pacific freight station on Second and R Street after SN switched from electrics to diesel in the early 1950s.

The other artifact of the SN era in this photo is the old passenger station on Terminal Way. Find City Hall on the far left of the photo (should be easy to see if you can find the Cal-Western building, aka The Citizen Hotel) and it's the brick-red structure just up and to the right.

The big boat in the foreground is either the Delta King or the Delta Queen. They alternated between Sacramento and San Francisco, passing each other in the middle of the night somewhere on the Delta, from their construction in 1926 until they were taken out of service in 1940, so obviously this shot has to be from somewhere between 1935-1940.

I remember seeing photos of the area and it looked like a ghost town completely run down.

Just curious.:)

petescafe: Most of the photos of the West End you see are from the redevelopment era, when most of the businesses had been forcibly closed. Of course, if you forcibly run people out of a neighborhood and don't allow anyone to move in, it's going to look like an utterly run-down ghost town, but before that social engineering was done, the West End was the most densely populated part of the city.

If you are interested in seeing some of the photos, go to the SAMCC online database:

http://www.sacramenities.com/history/Catalog/catalog.html

Use the search term "West End" and you'll see some urban street scenes that look straight out of a Dashiell Hammett novel. Very "film noir."

I grew up without any of this knowledge either...I'm 38, this all happened before I was born, but that's just part of doing history. A visit to SAMCC or the Sacramento Room to look at some Sactown photos (see, on topic!) provide a peek at the parts of the past that we can't visit in person anymore.

A book on the West End is definitely on my "to do" list. Gimme a few years, though...

Here I thought wburg was this old kurmudgeon in his late 40's or 50's... and we're the same age!!

Back to topic however, having grown up in Amador County, I am constantly reminded of the ongoing need for historic preservation of photos and then getting them into some type of media such as the above links that allow those of us who might not have been old enough to remember, enrich our knowledge and love of our towns and neighborhoods by learning the in-depth history and seeing the past revealed before our eyes.

SAMCC is a great resource. One of the nice things about modern archives is that they can put their collections online, although currently SAMCC has about 50,000 photos up, representing less than 1% of their photo collection! Although there is no substitute for going to the archive and talking with the archivists, and seeing the stuff they can't just scan and post online.

There are many archives with Sacramento materials, some of which is online in various forms. The California State Library, the Bancroft Library, USC's archive, all have online databases. The Railroad Museum library doesn't have photos online for the most part (they did scan some materials for a joint Sacramento history website which is currently undergoing revision) but they do have a searchable collections database to help researchers determine what collections might be useful before they come in.

Some of the most fascinating stuff to me, and perhaps to folks here, are some of the ambitious plans for Sacramento that never got built. One of the original plans for Old Sacramento was to raze all of the old buildings and build three mid-rise condo/apartment buildings surrounded by parking lots and park areas.

I would love to see Sacramento's premier city photographer (ahem Mike) contact the city of Sacramento and West Sacramento, to arrange for the city (and all the buildings with ornamental lighting), to be illuminated one night a year, in order to be photographed for CVB or postcards whatever..

Cal EPA
Ziggurat
Robert Matsui Federal Courthouse
Meridian I
1201 K street
Wells Fargo
Esquire Building
Plaza Park Tower (aka U.S. Bank Tower)
621 Capitol Mall (aka the future U.S. Bank Tower)
and soon 500 Capitol Mall (aka Bank of the West Tower)

What a picture that would make.. A picture the city could use to market the city and downtown..

(Mike, Rob are you guys listening?) ;)

Sacramento's nightime skyline will truly be one of the most striking of any California city (despite it's modest density and height)..

It's just a shame the state refuses to illuminate Cal EPA and the Ziggurat.

That is an awesome idea! Please help us with this, Rob! You must have SOME clout by now! :)

I was actually thinking about drafting a letter to Doris Matsui to see if she could get the Courthouse's lights turned on more frequently, if not every night. It would be a great tribute to her late husband and a treat for Sacramentans.

Good luck!

I've already tried that and the only response i got was her yearly or quarterly report from congress...

I even blew smoke up her @## and talked about the legacy of her husband, and how the Federal Courthouse illuminated at night was a fitting tribute.

She didn't bite. In fact nobody on her stafff wrote so much as a thank you for your idea or drop dead letter.

Sacramento photoshopped by snaptam on flickr.com:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2174/2153952104_45e31774d2_o.jpg

This must have been taken soon after a heavy rain. As gorgeous as the picture is, the flooded causeway gives an artificial impression of the city.

The reflection off the water is photo shopped. There has not been enough
water yet to open the spillway from the Sacramento River to fill the causeway.
This photo is taken from the levee road east of Davis before you drive on the Yolo Causeway.
Hopefully by February there will be enough rain to make this shot possible,
but even then, the buildings downtown would have to be twice as big to
get a reflection like this. If you look at the reflection you can see that ripple effect
is to consistent to be real plus: to get a reflection like this, downtown would have
to be right on the water when in reality it's about three miles away. The photographer
did a good job; I've been meaning to get out that way

As Mike said above, it was Photoshopped. The other give-away is the tower crane for 500 CM. Right now the river is a relatively small trickle from the dearth of rain to date (about to be inundated starting tonight...).

Anybody know where i might be able to find historical photos (to frame) of Sacramento?

I'm hoping to hang a few of them in an entertainment room I'm planning...

urban_encounter: Talk to the folks at the Sacramento Archives & Museum Collection Center: http://www.sacramenities.com/history/

They print photos for various uses, normally producing two prints each time and choosing one. The others they set aside, and make available for sale. Most of the photos are 8x10 or 5x7 and are very reasonably priced--you just sort of have to flip through the boxes they have until you find something you like.

You can also order custom prints of any photo at SAMCC: they have a searchable online database of around 50,000 photos. Of course, that represents only about 1% of their collection!

Ordering a custom print costs more (you have to pay for the negative) but if you are looking for specific scenes it's a great way to do it, and a nice way to help support the operation of Sacramento's treasure trove of city history.

Thanks wburg. It's an incredible collection and much more affordable than going to Stage Nine in Old Sacramento.

This is going to be a fun project.

For all its modesty, I think it is probably the most striking in California at night when everything is illuminated; (and i can't remember the last time i saw that.)

It's just too bad the state now controls two buildings that were built with ornamental lighting only to see it go dark when the state took the keys.

Then there's the Federal Courthouse... (Can't light it just in case Osama decides to hijack a 747 out of Sacramento InterGalactic Airport).

Here's one more I took last week from Arco. I drove by the Natomas East Gateway
tower today and they were almost done rasing steel for the 6th floor. You can
see the crane for the East Gateway tower just below the 500CM tower to the left.

Hey everyone,

I just moved downtown, but have been watching this page for some time now. I absolutely enjoy reading all of your posts, its truly my favorite place to get the inside scoop on what is going on in Sacramento.

Here is a picture I took of the ornamental lighting on the Elks Tower, is this new? I know I just moved here, but I have been downtown many times and I don't recall the building being lit like this; I think it looks great regardless.

Hopefully I have a chance to post more. Also, does anyone have a site recommendation for image hosting?
