I'm really liking the cladding too. It's definitely shinyer than what we were lead to believe, but I wouldn't say that's a bad thing. There might be a hint of the 80s in there, I don't know. If there is that could also mean its just ahead of its time. All great design tends to be just that. I really like it so far, although I haven't seen it in person. :)

The vision glass is quite transparent on that one floor. Is that because the ones above are actually opaque and covering mechanical and the main office floors will be like the transparent floor OR is the rest of the tower going to be mirrored like most of that cladding and that one floor is just an anomaly?

The lobby will have transparent glass while the office floors will have ultra reflective glass.

That floor will be a part of public space(lobby/atrium) thus the justification to be distinctive from the rest of the floors. Though the rest of the floors wont follow that pattern they will be mirrored.

this is that floor specifically

^^^ The upper floors will have the ultra reflective glass. The clear glass I beleive was unique only to the base and that 1st floor where it is already.

In what way? It looks like a glass facade,no different from Lever House or any other all glass facade that was ever built.

...:haha:. Yeah. This is just I dont even.

For those of you who are wondering how fast the glass are installed, you should check out this timelapse video I posted on the Museum and Memorial thread.

The video focuses on the Memorial, but you can see the progress for 4WTC very clearly on the upper right.

I apologize if the video is short, it was only a timelapse covering construction progress of 6 hours.

I still can't get over the reflective mirror-like quality of the glass. When I was in New York, they had only just started installing the first line of glass along the west wall, and it was difficult to get a feel for how it would look. Now that there is an appreciable amount up, the glass looks absolutely stunning!

Was biking down 5th Ave yesterday after I'd been outa town for a couple weeks and didn't realize that this will loom over 5th. Should be a really impressive site to look down the endless street wall of 5th Ave and then see a nearly 1,000 foot office building looming over it.

I'll try and snap a photo in the next few days just to get a different perspective.

Is it a Beauty Contest or a Wrestling Match?

I think 7 may win the Beauty contest. I like 4's cladding, but the chunky and awkward asymmetrical setback up top, mars its perfection.

However, 4 would win in a Wrestling match, handsdown! I mean look at it! It is bottom heavy and has a good 20 floors on 7. No contest!

yeah, i agree with the 4WTC setback, it's just awkward how the bottom half is so bulky... I wish they'd put the setback lower down (to balance it out), or have another major setback. 4WTC is the least attractive out of the other new WTC towers (or at least the one that looks most out of place), or the most conservative,
honestly, i wish this tower was slimmer,

Four World Trade Center is already massive at street level even though it's just poking at Lower Manhattan's skyline right now. I haven't been there for 1 month, but from street level that building was a monster then. I think this monster has became way bigger now. Must be a killer from street level now, and I can't wait to see how big it is once it's complete.

Will the bulkiness serve a security purpose - i.e., make it more resistant to collapse in the event of significant structural damage?

I really like those "criss cross" support beams on the north side of the tower. Too bad they're going to be covered with the mirror-like glass, barely being able to see them afterwards. Take a good look at it now before the facade rises on the north side.

It's funny, but I was going to ask if they would rush to cover those beams up before the 9/11 anniversary, because they are kind of odd looking. It seems that for whatever reason, the west side cladding is way ahead of the north side. And I assumed that one reason was the greater complexity of attaching mounting brackets on the north side, because of those same irregular beams.

Recall, according to info posted on this thread previously, the X-beams were not part of Maki's design. They were put in because of the unevenness of the Manhattan bedrock; by shifting the columns over several feet, they put the structural load onto more solid ground.

Yeah, I didn't like it back then, but now that the tower got alot taller, it looks nice. I mean hey, it looks better than having 4 identical vertical columns going up and down on the side of the tower.

Also, another reason why I liked them is because 3WTC's X bracing appears to be removed in the latest renders. Because of this, I was hoping 4WTC's "criss cross" beams can fill in the spot. It's the closest we'll get to 3WTC's X bracing. (If it gets removed, of course).

hate to be so argumentative, but the "criss cross" beams of 4wtc will have such an infintesimal effect compared to the x bracing of 3wtc, and to be honest will not come close in any way, imo of course.

Or they might not have any effect at all, if the beams are hidden by the cladding. And if the north side glass has the same optical qualities as the west side glass, then they probably will be. Maybe at certain times of day, or from the inside looking out, you could tell that they are there, but otherwise not.

Which means the criss cross beams might end up being the answer to a trivia question. Or one of those "little known details" that guides talk about on architecture tours. ;) Anyway the good point is, we will probably know the answer to this question soon, one way or the other, because it's likely that they will install that glass in the next couple of months.

Not just the mechanical floors, but all floors as well. These ultra reflective glass panels prevents anyone even up close to see the floor behind it.

I'm going to have to disagree. Up close, yes, Tower 4's glass looks FANTASTIC. When you look at it from afar, though, it looks kind of dark and bland. I will reserve judgment until the cladding is complete, though.

Tower 1, on the other hand, looks great all over. I just hope they don't goof up that podium.

I'm really looking forward to T2 as well. It'll be the "busiest" of the towers when it comes to the cladding.

That's because, from far away, the viewing angles don't allow you to see anything other than A) the ground and B) the building across the street. Both of which are usually in shadow, since it's Lower Manhattan. Tower 1's curtain wall started several stories higher than this facade has even reached yet, and as such you see reflections of the sky and taller buildings that stick out of the canyons, giving it a false appearance of being lighter colored that 4, when in fact the opposite is true.

Up close/far away isn't really going to matter with this kind of cladding. It's a mirror with almost perfect reflections. The reflections aren't dimmed or color shifted. It will look nuts when done. The light colors will be brighter, and the shadows will be darker.

If I'm looking at this graininess correctly then that should be cladding on the north side of the building. Also, are they not putting glass on the podium for the same reason the aren't putting it on the base of 1 WTC? To get stuff into the building or something?
