Kwun Tong redevelopment backed


Urban Renewal Authority Managing Director Billy Lam says the redevelopment project in Kwun Tong town centre has been welcomed by the community.



Speaking on radio talk shows today, Mr Lam said the project will improve the local environment and bring huge economic benefits. About 3,300 job opportunities will be created during the redevelopment period, reducing Hong Kong's unemployment rate by 0.09 %. It will bring the area more than 17,300 job vacancies, almost five times the number of jobs now available there.



Mr Lam said the plot ratio will be reduced from 7.98 to 7.5 after considering views expressed by various sectors, adding that the reduction represents the maximum level of market risk that the authority can take.



He said the project has taken into consideration the interests of various quarters and struck a reasonable balance between development and conservation, environmental protection and the use of development space, and between financial cost control and resident opinion.



The authority will begin property acquisition and rehousing of tenants after the Town Planning Board and the Chief Executive in Council has approved the development plans. The project will be delivered in phases and will be completed in 12 years.

The sphere, canopy, and the tiered garden reminds me of the proposal for West Kowloon Cultural Center.
If they cannot build it there, they may as well build a similar one here. It looks great !

I just can see the tower in the scale model(first photo), then its gone, does anyone knows if that tower was cancelled or something?

the tallest tower is in the first 3 illustrations, I think the model in the last couple of pics are just of the landscaping, rather than the towers. Kwun Tong is one of the (possibly the?) most densely populated places in the world - a bit of green can't hurt.

The overall scheme is still the town centre redevelopment, although individual sections are separately named, such as the residential section is Grand Central. No news on the names for the other commercial projects including the tallest tower.

More than a dozen street vendors and business owners facing eviction from an old Hong Kong neighbourhood to make way for the city’s largest-ever redevelopment project have labelled the relocation and compensation packages on offer as unsatisfactory.

Most businesses originally operating as unauthorised shops in Yue Man Square – at the centre of the Kwun Tong renewal project – have accepted compensation deals from authorities.

But 13 hawkers who have operated in the area over four decades on an authorised basis have complained they are being turfed out of their own community.

A further three tradesmen are still awaiting relocation, while three unauthorised shop vendors refuse to leave.

Authorities last month evicted another shop owner in a sudden operation. The man had attempted to take his own life by jumping off a building, but was talked down by rescuers, according to media reports.

The last store standing in Kwun Tong's Yue Man Square – a decades-old fruit juice shop – is being evicted on Tuesday to make way for a major redevelopment project undertaken by the Urban Renewal Authority.

The elderly owner of the shop, surnamed Cheung, told RTHK that she's been holding the fort since her husband's passing, and insists on staying put till the very last minute.
