Golden Trend Mosaics Adorn
World's Largest Clock In Mecca

Italian mosaic tile producer, Trend, which has its UK headquarters in Kent, is nearing completion of one of the industry's largest and most prestigious commissions in modern times. It is for the supply of almost 400 million glass tesserae, or individual tiles, destined for the world's largest and most elevated clock faces, on the celebrated Mecca Royal Clock Tower in Saudi Arabia.

At total of 40,000 square metres of mosaic tiles, 13,000m2 of which are 24 carat gold leafed, will adorn the four 43m high clock faces, atop the tallest hotel in the world, which forms part of the Abraj Al Bait complex.

Trend was commissioned by Dubai-based Premier Composite Technologies, a global supplier of composite structures that manufactured the 800m high clock tower, and, in a related contract, also supplied mosaic tiles for cladding 250 shading umbrellas in Medina, each of which spans an area of 625m2 and is used for sheltering pilgrims from the sun. To implement this colossal project, valued at around €18 million, Trend is utilising a new automated production line, again the first of its kind, at its plant in Vivaro, Northern Italy, which is currently dedicated to output for the Mecca Clock at a rate of 12,000m2 of tiles per month, to meet the mid-2011 final delivery deadline.

The 24ct yellow gold mosaic tiles featured on this project are from Trend's Aureo Modern range, which are available through UK stockists and more usually employed for decorative highlights or sumptuous feature panels. The individual tiles consist of three layers, each with a thin leaf of gold sandwiched between a supportive layer of 4mm thick glass and a thin surface layer of perfectly transparent blown glass, both made from up to 66% post-industrial recycled material. The remaining tiles are from Trend's semi-transparent Vitreo glass mosaic collection, also with a high recycled content, which are matched in size and depth to the golden Aureo.

Located in the Sirat Mountains of Saudi Arabia, the holy city of Mecca, or Makkah in Arabic, is the centre of the Islamic world and birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad. Here, the Abraj Al Bait complex of seven huge towers is part of the government's plan to develop Mecca for receiving as many as 10 million pilgrims each year and the clock tower will be its focus, with elevators taking visitors up to a viewing balcony beneath its four faces. Upon completion this Autumn, the tower will stand as the tallest building in Saudi Arabia, with a finished height of 610 metres, and it will house a 7-star hotel, the most luxurious in the city.

Already described by tourism guides as 'a definite must-see when travelling to this Emirate', the newly-built largest clock in the world will dwarf the hitherto biggest four-faced clock, Big Ben, at almost five times the size and will be visible from a distance of around 25 kilometres. Each face is being adorned with 98 million Trend mosaic glass pieces, more than a quarter in 24 carat gold, creating an aspect of opulence and quality entirely fitting for a treasured modern landmark. At night the clock faces and hands will be illuminated by 2 million LED lights and 15 powerful projectors will send beams of light far into the sky.

In a related commission from Premier Composite Technologies, Trend has also supplied glass mosaics for tiling foldable shading umbrellas installed in the Medina Haram Piazza. Home to the three oldest mosques in Islam and the burial place of Prophet Muhammad, Medina is another focal point for pilgrims and, with temperatures reaching 45˚C, the giant umbrellas protect them from the effects of the burning sun. The 17m x 18m hydraulically-operated retractable umbrellas create a vaulted interior effect, improving climatic conditions, and at night are closed to promote natural cooling. Composite arms protect the umbrellas' membrane covering when closed and each 11m tall structure is mosaic tiled with Aureo and Vitreo pieces, adding durability, weathering performance and aesthetics.

Since Trend's Vitreo semi-transparent tiles are produced using a superior 'fused glass' technique and coloured en masse, each tessera is tinted throughout and thoroughly resistant to abrasion and sunlight, even in the extreme Saudi Arabian climate. Similarly, Aureo tiles have all the traditional lasting qualities of pure gold, providing durable highlights to the overall design.

"These are undoubtedly the most notable mosaic tiling installations of our times and we are delighted that Trend is being associated with two sites of such historic interest, recalling the earliest days of Italian mosaics as decorative art," says Trend GB Sales Director, Tom Anderson. unlike most people, i find this building to be ok. nothing too amazing, but better than average. a giant glass box here would be completely out of place.

I watched a really great review of the actual process pilgrims go through at Mecca on The Vice Guide to Travel called "Mecca Diaries". I think it sheds some light on an otherwise very mysterious ritual for most Christian Westerners like myself. There were a couple of shots that showed this beast of a building as well.

Wow. That Zamzam Tower base looks great. Any pics of the main entrance to the complex? Also, any of the street conditions at the back of the complex? Lastly, did they demolish that little tower in front of the complex yet?

ok this has GOT to be one of the coolest freaking structures of recent times. yeah there's the over engineered, the classy and modern but this is just out there in it's own little world. damn, hard to believe that those "small" towers are 7 and 800 footers!

and i may take some bullets for saying this, but the main tower sort of, kind of has a similarity to the empire state. imo, more so than it does with big ben.

and that clock is gorgeous, 100x better than i imagined! i still dislike (a lot) some of the color options of the upper parts of the main tower, but as more gets finished it actually looks okay.

Is it an optical illusion or are the clock faces on the sides not true circles, but instead elongated ellipsoids? I realize the side faces are not bracketed by the same wide pillars as the front and back, but the clock faces on the sides never look like pure circles to me. They look squished ever so slightly width-wise.

I was wondering if this was true and done in order to make the four faces the same height but the narrower sides forced this compromise?

(From the ground, the foreshortening of perspective would negate this narrowing of the side faces, to the viewer anyway.)

I think it's because we know they're both different sizes, but from corners they're so close to size that you think one is elliptical, even though that's not the case.

I had been wondering that for the last couple days, not sure if i'm right but i don't think one is elliptical. also, i used to think the front/back clocks were bigger, but it looks like the side ones will be the bigger ones.

:shrug:Imagine if it's not a circle... there will be a problem with the hands. In this video, the hands show that the clocks are a true circle. Enjoy!

The only thing different is the brown ''bars'' at each corner...they are not the same size for the sides, the face is smaller and bigger in front.

One thing I dislike about this tower (besides its horrendous architecture) is how its totally out of scale with itself. You have these huge entry ways and the clock face that 100s of feet high. It just does a disservice to the building by downsizing its overall appearance. Its definitely afraid of its height.

Scale, scale, scale...had it been any smaller another Mecca supertall would have surpassed it and then this one would have been compared to said supertall.

Building a supertall in the middle of a metropolis is concerning, like 15 Penn next to the ESB. A lot of argument over that. But building a supertall in a lowrise city urges developers to get things going in terms of development.

Mecca is in the first few phases of a massive redevelopment which will add some backbone to Abraj Al-Bait's size. It's too early in the construction process to see that, but in a few years that should all change.

The religious tourism industry in Saudi Arabia is taking on an increasingly luxurious feel as high-end hotel construction in Mecca booms to accommodate pilgrims with upmarket needs.

Hadi Helal, a marketing agent for Abraj al-Bait, a complex of luxury hotels, malls and flats on the outskirts of Mecca, said that upmarket hotels choose to open shop in Mecca because business can count on being able to fill rooms and tables with Muslims who must make the pilgrimage, or hajj, at least once in their lives.

“The big name hotels come here [to Saudi] because they know there is business here,” said Mr. Helal in a report released Thursday by Euromonitor. “People will not stop coming to hajj, they cannot do hajj anywhere else.”

Last November, about 2.5 million Muslims went on the hajj pilgrimage, he said.

The Abraj complex–known for its looming clock tower—has 15,000 housing units and 70,000 square meters of retail space. The complex offers luxuries such as Asprey toiletries, a 24-hour butler service and $270 worth of chocolates for every customer.

The growth in Saudi’s hospitality sector comes as the kingdom seeks to boost its tourism industry. Business Monitor International forecasts that that there will be 343,000 hotel rooms in Saudi Arabia by 2015, up from 250,000 in 2011. The firm expects the number of tourist arrivals to grow by an average of 6 percent each year to 2015.

International chains first opened their hotels in Saudi Arabia in 2009. Since then, Mecca has become home to a number of high-profile names, including Raffles Hotels & Resorts, InterContinental Hotels Group and Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

Mustafa Damblat, sales manager at Al Deyar Travel, a Hajj and Omrah specialty travel agency in Dubai, said the reason why there are so many luxury hotels in and around Mecca is expensive land prices.

“It is the one of the most expensive land locations in the world,” he said. “Only upmarket businesses can afford to locate to the best spots in Mecca. They invest with big sponsors and royalty to secure their land.”

For now, luxury hotels surrounding Mecca’s holy site will remain popular simply because they are in the most convenient location, he added.

“They are the closest to the Holy Mosque of Mecca and people want to be in a hotel where they feel the most convenient and comfortable, particularly as many of the pilgrims are of old age,” he said.

The tourism revenue in 2010 reached SR66 billion ($17.6 billion), according to the Center for Studies and Research at Asharqia Chamber. The group predicts that the revenue is expected to cross SR232 billion ($61 billion) by 2020.

The Kaaba, which is supposed to be the focus of this monstrosity, predates Islam- and apparently there was a lot of sex going on in there (even some births). It was already 'sacred' to Muhammad's great, great grand parents even though they worshiped many gods.

So it's only fitting that a small circus is now towered over by a huge one.

The tower´s observation deck will be one of the highest (or just the highest - higher than SWFC or BD) but not in the crescent I think. The staircase and the "windows" in the crescent are for maintenance, cleaning and polishing the crescent imo.

The pic with the workers on the staircase ist nearly breathtaking!

Premier Composite Technologies (PCT) has celebrated its fifth anniversary by hosting a company function around the test construction of the Dokaae Tower’s 23m composite Hilal, which will be placed on top of the largest clock tower in the world in Makkah.

The Dokaae development comprises seven high-rise towers overlooking the Holy Mosque. The towers all have distinct design themes, and their heights follow a grading pattern providing a maximum number of direct views of the Holy Mosque. At peak times, the complex is able to accommodate 65,000 guests and visitors.

PCT has supplied the uppermost 370m of the 601m clock tower, a construction that involves over 60,000m2 of composite cladding. This includes the four epoxy glass fibre clock faces, two of which measure 43m in diameter, as well as the 23m carbon clock hands and the 23m self-supporting carbon Hilal.

ويبلغ ارتفاع الهلال نحو 22 مترا، بعرض 24 مترا، وتم تقسيمه إلى 10 أجزاء يمكن إعادة تركيبها لتسهيل نقله الى أعلى ساعة مكة؛ أكبر ساعة في العالم، بحجمها الذي يصل لستة أمثال ساعة بِيغ بين الشهيرة في لندن.

When you're looking at the nighttime shots, all you see is the clock. the clock is just part of the building. You're not looking at the detail. If the clock is all you want to see, fine; looking at the clock doesn't change the time.

FORMAX gears up for growth in multiaxials

FORMAX worked with Premier Composite Technologies to create the hands for the clock of the Dokaae Tower in Mecca,
the world's largest clock tower.The clock hands are 22 m and 17 m in length and are made out of carbon prepreg.They weigh 6 tonnes each.

Diverse applications

Wessely points out the diverse range of applications the company has been involved in. These range from developing quadaxial fabrics for use in Lamborghini's new carbon composite supercar, to supplying materials for the Dokaae Tower in Mecca – the work's largest clock tower.

On the Dokaae Tower project FORMAX worked with Premier Composite Technologies (PCT) of Dubai to produce the clock hands using carbon prepreg. The clock hands had to be be hollow to allow access to the 2000 LEDS embedded into their surface. They were therefore designed as sandwich structures, featuring an outer layer of prepregged glass cloth, a structural laminate of unidirectional (UD) carbon prepreg and secondary reinforcements using FORMAX carbon biaxial fabrics.

FORMAX materials will also be used in the tower's hilal (cresent moon) structure which will measure 23 m. Working with PCT and Gurit UK, FORMAX developed a custom hybrid quadraxial fabric for this, which uses a blend of carbon and glass fibres.

which will be placed on the top of the Dokaae Tower in Mecca – the largest clock tower in the world.

Dubai based composite structures supplier Premier Composite Technologies (PCT) is celebrating five years in business.

PCT was founded in 2006 by a team of three people, including managing director Hannes Waimer, to serve the architectural and marine markets in the Middle East.

Today, the company has grown to over 670 people. It works a number of European architects, including SL Rasch, Snohetta and Foster + Partners, and has evolved into the building of production race boats, including the FARR 400.

PCT is currently involving in the construction of the Dokaae Tower in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

This the largest clock tower in the world and PCT has supplied the upper 370 m of the 601 m tower, a construction that involves over 60 000 m2 of composite cladding. This includes the four glass fibre epoxy clock faces, two of which measure 43 m in diameter, as well as the 23 m carbon clock hands and the 23 m self-supporting carbon hilal.
