Does anyone have any good pictures of the red mile from 04? tasteful pictures of course. A friend of mine just moved onto 17th Ave, and isn't aware of the massive crowds that could potentially cram the street so I want to show her what it was like in 04.

Also this could be a good place to post pics from this years run.

I doubt we'll be seeing big crowds like last time. Even if the Flames get by the Red wings, which doesn't seem likely. The crowds probably won't be the same. The police are already talking about controlling 17th again.

The fact that we are there is a good excuse to do some partying. Not all teams make the playoffs you know. :D

Actually, I found quite a bit, sometimes you just need to change key words... Calgary Red mile works, Flames Red mile...

then just try a normal google search. I'm sure I quickly saw over 30 different images from the Red Mile, including some boobies, even though I have my Moderate safe search on in Google at work. Hopefully, the net admins here aren't over zealous

EDITPS: I also found a large variety of images on Flickr...

There might also be a pinch of crowd splitting, with Flames Central on 8th. Of course, half of the crowd was from the Saddledome, which will still hit 17th.

The Red Mile is a joke, frankly. It wasn't always so.

In 03-04, partying on the streets was a freak occurence by true fans who were shocked and in awe by their little team that could. I was proudly one of them. These people were largely peaceful and good spirited. Who cares if women want to flash, it was harmless.

Now its a bunch of douchebags who want an excuse to party like morons and act like violent apes (kind of like the "copper kilometre"). I agree that there won't be much to party about this season, and this might be the temporary demise of such an event. If the Flames get knocked out in the first round (again), there will be plenty of room on the bandwagon next year, and many season tickets to be had. Perhaps this is a good thing.

Dude, lay off Whyte ave. The shit that happened there was no different then what happened on the "red mile". I know, I experienced both. I'm sure I can search through some DVDs of images I have from that experience. Although the media kept it on the downlow (unlike up here in etown) There were fires lit, fights, and general holliganisms on the red mile as well. For the most part, on both avenues, it was good natured high fiving, go team go. Theres always a few individuals in any large gathering that try to ruin it for everyone. The one on Whyte Ave just happened to be caught by the national media.

I wasn't disputing that. I said the Red Mile degenerated to that which was caught on Copper Kilometre (that is a pathetic knockoff though). The Red Mile was about fun and camaraderie... now it has degenerated to basic human savagery. Edmonton was just caught on tape better, thats all.

THe only reason last year sucked in comparision to the 03/04 was that fact that there was only one round of games. The red mile was never born until game 6 of the detroit series (round 2) in 03/04.. There was no depth last year, that's why it did not compare. If, sorry, when we get to round two you will see this city start to embrace the playoffs. Right now with game one looming tomorrow there is ZERO buzz around town, it's still "just another game". That will quickly change...just watch!

How can you say that??? Where is your savagery evidence? You talk as if it's a current problem yet there has yet to be a celebration this year.

Lol, nobody branded it that but the media. Of all the times I went out there to party, it was always "Lets go to Whyte" never, "Lets go to the Copper Mile". The monikers were pathetic, but no one was emulating Calgary. Trust me on that one, many cities have seen sports celebrations before, hell even Jasper Ave was torn up back in the 80s, so its nothing new. Thanks for stamping the Calgary TM on it though

Well I meant compared to the roots of it in the 03/04 Detroit series. I saw the savagery, by that I mean vandalism, urinating in the middle of the streets, violence, etc first hand. Soured me on it for sure.

Again, that wasn't an Edmonton attack. Whoever named it the "Copper Kilometre" (likely some dufus in the Toronto media) clearly was trying to knock off the Red Mile moniker. My friends in Edmonton always called it going down to Whyte as well.

I don't think "Mr. Magoo" is reffing these games... (could be wrong). I hope they do go somewhere, but this team has some serious character issues compared to the 03/04 squad, and I don't see them going anywhere.

Calgary had both coaching and teamwork issues. Playfair can't coach, and the the team can't play as a team, they play as individuals. Also, there are only a few players that are giving it their best every game, while the rest just slack.

The Red mile was a freak occurance which made it special. I randomly showed up on 17th avenue after we beat Vancouver in round 1. No one thought that it would turn into a big party so there was very little police presence after that game. To be honest with you that was my favorite memory of the red mile because it was just a bunch of flames fans wanting to go have a good time, and give high 5's and yell. not a bunch of losers who wanted to see boobs and be part of the 'in' thing.

however, Edmonton may have gotten a bad rep on the whyte ave incidents in the media, they were more widespread than what happened in Calgary. Stabbings come to mind.

Fortunately I was residing in Calgary at the time and had the joy of experiencing The Red Mile. 2004 was unreal, such a sense of community and collective purpose. I can't imagine anything comparing to it in the future. The most recent version of The Red Mile operates under a large police presence(not necessarily a bad thing, but definitely alters the experience), with a majority crowd of 20 somethings rather than a mixture of demographics. During 04' I recall high fiving children as young as 5-8 who happen to be with parents/rest of their family, I imagine there's much less of that interaction occurring.

Nonetheless, Calgary fans are truly inspirational with a contagious pride for their beloved Flames and the city which supports them.

The following photos were found on Flames Fan/Red Mile websites that sprung up during the 04' run, some may have come from beyond.ca as well.

What happened on Whyte? Someone lit a fire? In all fairness, the only difference between what took place on both avenues during each respective cup run was the same, save for 3 facts,
1) Different Color Jerseys
2) One fire of a phone booth.

For each one of the pics in this thread, I could show a similar pic that happened in Edmonton, but thats not the point of this thread, and neither is Edmonton, so lets stop talking about Edmonton.

I lived at the corner of 17th and 5th street during the 04 Red Mile. I don't recall any fires and nothing but good-spirited celebration. To me, a fire in the street amongst a large crowd is basically the tipping point between a large crowd celebrating and a riot.

As you said though, this is about the Red Mile, v.2007. Maybe we can discuss the "Blue Mile, v.2008" next year. Until then... GO FLAMES GO!

It's got nothing to do with being a bandwagon jumper, and everything to do with being a fan of the game itself. I'm not going to blindly cheer ONLY for the team that happens to play in the city I happen to live in at the moment. I'll cheer on the home team for tradition's sake, even if they stink - but I'm not going to stand on pride and hate every other team due to an accident of my birth or where I happen to have gotten a job this year.

Hell, if you're going to stand on the old "only ever cheer for the local team" mantra, you should at the very least be able to understand why someone would cheer for a Canadian team once their favourite is knocked out of the playoffs. I put on an Oilers jersey last year because they had a talented team, were a lot of fun to watch - and they beat Detroit. Any team that does that gets my support (hint hint Flames).

I'm not about to stop watching hockey just because "my" team gets knocked out - there are 29 other teams in this league, and it's a fun game to cheer for even when my choice pony isn't in the running.

I'm a Flames fan to the end, and I will NEVER cheer for the crappy Oilers as long as I live, even when they were the last Canadian team last year, I couldn't bring myself to root for them. I will however, cheer for every other Canadian team (except Toronto of course :haha: Losers) as far as they go. Go Ottawa go Vancouver.

I was a Jets fan. Consequently, not only did I get to watch 3 western Canadian teams routinely beat the shit out of my team year after year, but I then got to lose my team entirely.

If *I* can swallow my pride and cheer for another Canadian team, so can anyone (except Toronto of course :haha: ).

Anyway, I wasn't implying that everyone should cheer for the Oilers. But I hate with a passion the casual hockey fans who know dick all about the game, only watch during the playoffs, only cheer for a team due to an accident of birth, and then start shouting "OMG BANDWAGON" when people support more than a single team. Hell, how would you ever attend a Grey Cup game if you thought that way about football?

I cheered for Edmonton right up to game 7 of the final... when I realized if they actually won that game, it would eliminate everything that Calgary had done in '04.

I hate all the rest of the Canadian teams... with a passion!!!

Whatever happens to the Flames this year, I'm thankful that I'm not a Leafs fan.

There was a piece on TV before one of the games showing clips all of the Canadian teams that have won the cup, and the leafs clips were the only ones in in black and white.

Good sir, I tip my hat to you. After coming back from watching the Flames drop out early again, this was the first thing I read. Just what I needed.

You guys joke, but I actually have real, honest-to-goodness tumbleweeds that blow through my neighbourhood when it's windy out in the fall.

Maybe this is normal in Alberta, but I found it exceedingly funny the first time. I kept looking around for cow skulls and cactii (which I know we do have around Drumheller). :haha:

Common in Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan definitely. I've seen that in Calgary, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Swift Current, Mooooooose Jaw, Regina, and some points east of there.
Never really witnessed it in Edmonton Saskatoon or Winnipeg before though.

Or last year, really.

It's fun to blame The Man for putting us down, but mostly it was the Flames not making it anywhere.
