My subjective list of the most compelling building and infrastructure projects happening in the North Shore: North Vancouver and West Vancouver.

1. Redevelopment of Lower Lonsdale and Shipyards site in North Vancouver (including the potential establishment of a national maritime museum)
2. Sea To Sky Highway Upgrade
3. Seymour-Capilano Water Utility Project (one of the biggest but most under-the-radar infrastructure projects in the GVRD)
4. Port of Vancouver expansion of North Vancouver container sites
5. City of North Vancouver Library and adjoining condominium towers
6. Cypress Mountain Terrain and Quad Expansion for 2010 Games
7. North Shore Costco on former BC Rail site in Norgate area
8. City of North Vancouver Green Necklace -- connecting Mahon Park, Lonsdale corridor and Grand Boulevard
9. 2010 Legacies Walking/Biking Pathway connecting Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay
10. Lynn Valley library and town centre redevelopment

:previous: Can't argue that list but there are a couple of large-ish proposed NS projects that I'm wondering what their status is ...

1. The proposed Squamish band mall located directly east of the Real Canadian Superstore
2. The proposed Save-On-Foods store and mall located directly east of Capilano Mall

Some other interesting upcoming ones are:

-the proposed new sewage treatment plant in the Norgate area that would replace the existing facility underneath the Lion's Gate Bridge
-the 40 floor tower near the foot of Lonsdale (not sure if you're including this one with the shipyard site)
-the proposed 4 towers in the Seylynn neighborhood
-the new sea to sky interchange through the Eagleridge bluffs

I wish we could get some aerial shots of the sea to sky construction, I took a walk up there this morning cuz they didn't seem to be working and it's just incredible how they're building right into the mountain, this is truly a massive project, I didn't have time today, but if u walk further down you get to the point where they're still cutting down trees. This is gonna be a really impressive highway to drive.

these are a bit old but should be updated soon

gives you a feel of the size and scope of the West Van work of the Sea to Sky.

My comments:

1. I've seen those old buildings for years and nothings been done in a hurry. I think they should put the "erection shop" sign back up at the old shipyards.

2. Sea-to-Sky upgrades are really needed. I wouldn't count on getting to Whistler at breakneck speeds during 2010 with the upgrades.

3. Almost done. I've walked by the facility at Rice Lake several times. the thing is huge. Good to know that our water is clean.

4. More business for us $$$

5. Haven't acually heard about this one (probs cuz i live in the district)

6. This makes cypress just that much bigger. The new area should have a smaller lineup considering that most of the runs feeding off of it are blue and black (of course, that one green could increase beginer traffic). If it is anything like how Sun Peaks has Mt. Morrsey away from the main village (it has no lines at the peak times of day) it should make that mountain much better.

7. as I like to call it "the literal big box store". Good to see one here.

8/9. Green is good. The Baden Powell trail is an excellent hiking path. I'd like to see more of those trails pop up in the near future. It's our tourism. Nothing flashy, just a dirt trail through the woods.

10. I said in 8/9 the trails weren't flashy, this is flashy. Nice spacious interiors and a great overall appearance.

Moving Foreward:

With that $14b transit announcement this morning, I was hoping for at least a rapid bus going somewhere on the north shore. We're too small for skytrain or anything similar. But something that would either rapidly cross the north shore or give phibbs exchange something quicker than what we have.

So what do we really need on the north shore?

We need to decentralize our transportaion network. Our entire road system east of the second narrows bridge is fed entirely through two places: Mt. Seymour parkway (and adjacent on/off ramps) and the Main Street/Dollarton Highway Bridge (and adjacent on/off ramps). There is a major problem when the bridge is backed up because that entire area gets plugged. The same thing goes for the Lions Gate bridge. if there is major traffic or an accident, traffic stopps along the arterial roads (and in the case of the second narrows the only roads). For safety concerns and for mobility concerns, the north shore should look at a link between Lynn Valley and the Seymour area in order to provide a route that is independant of the bridge. Something that isn't totally reliant on one piece of infastructure.

Cheers
