I thought people might want to look at this...

http://www.cityofkingston.ca/residents/recreation/arenas/lvec/

A new 5,000 seat arena for the Kingston Fontenacs (OHL) under construction about 1 block from the centre of town. It's good to see Kingston knows where to place its crowd-drawing professional sports facilities (unlike Ottawa and to a lesser extent London).

We also have 2 high-rise condos going up on the water (unfortunately the last bit of undeveloped waterfront property) and a 250 million dollar new student activity and sports centre just starting construction on Queen's University's campus. The arena and the gymnasium will each have a seating capacity of 2000.

The new arena is situated in a prime spot indeed. I hope that the arena will spur some development in the surrounding area. Aside from the LCBO and Food Basics there's just a lot of abandoned buildings in that area (especially since the police will be moving out soon).

As for the 2 condos downtown, I like how the newer one completely blots out the lakeview from the first one finished, especially considering how much Homestead is charging to rent those apartments.

Where should Landsdowne Park and Lynx Stadium have been placed instead?

Where should the John Labatt Centre (right smack in downtown London) have been placed instead?

For some reason, I thought the Labatt Centre was across the river. Regarding Ottawa, I was referring to Scotiabank Place.

The block D condos are hideous. Too bad for such a prime location on the water. Oh well.

There is actually a really cool midrise building going up on Queen Street near the Staples. I have seen the rendering, but don't have it on me. right now it is a pit.

Regarding Ottawa, I was referring to Scotiabank Place.

Unlike the Kingston arena, Scotiabank Place was not built and operated by the municipality.

The new arena is on Barrack, next to the Food Basics and diagonal from the LCBO.

I have a buddy from Edmonton that writes for the Whig now.... glad to see some densification and smarter building (new arena in the DT location) for this beautiful city.

Where is the current arena located and how many does it seat? It looks like Kingston saved money using consultant reports done by other cities too. Nice.

The current arena is an old concrete barn (basically) northwest of Downtown in a seedy 'hood. I think it seats 2,000.

you forgot to get in a dig at windsor... their new OHL arena is way out in their eastern suburbs, in big-box mall territiory and miles from the downtown core.

Only 2000? Wow, I thought OHL would have higher minimum requirement then that. This new arena is going to be awesome for Kingston then, especially for Frontenac fans. Should be good for Kingston and the OHL.

Too bad about Windsor.

Windsor's choice was unfortunate, although it was partially driven by the fact the Casino is building a 5000 seat theatre downtown. I still think it was a mistake.

That being said, Scotiabank Place has to have the worst location of any Ontario city's primary arena.

I lived in Kingston for three years -- never figured out where the OHL team played....

They play at the Memorial Centre on Concession Rd, a few blocks northwest of Princess & Division.

Very true. Like many arenas south of the border.
