Technopark sets up helpline

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Technopark has set up a helpline to check on the credentials of firms advertising for jobs through various mediums. This decision has come into effect after receiving frequent complaints of companies conducting job interviews assuring employment in Technopark and collecting money promising jobs.

Those who wish to find out about the firms’ credentials can call Abhilash D S, Officer (HR & Admin), Park Centre, Technopark, at 0471-2700222. “Often, many job seekers are not sure if a recruiter is genuine or not. The helpline is meant to help such job seekers,” said Technopark CEO Mervin Alexander.

A 60-km inner orbital road corridor linking Mangalapuram, Pothencode, Powdikonam, Vazhayila, Vattiyoorkavu, Peyad, Malayinkeezhu, and Vizhinjam has been mooted for the district to promote balanced development and to decongest the capital city.

Vehicular traffic in Thiruvananthapuram region has increased rapidly with more people using private vehicles. Traffic experts say that traffic congestion is no longer restricted to ‘peak hours’; it is there all day.

An analysis shows that the development of a radial-cum-orbital network of roads for Thiruvananthapuram will be ideal. Former director of NATPAC and architect of the ongoing City Road Improvement Programme (CRIP) N.S. Srinivasan says a network of three orbital roads and radial roads will improve the connectivity of regional nodal centres with Thiruvananthapuram and amongst themselves. These road corridors will also act as “development corridors”.

The last two decades saw an urban sprawl developing in the capital. The city expanded beyond the administrative boundary. It does not function in isolation anymore and it is functionally related to peripheral areas. In the Thiruvananthapuram Capital Region, the ‘mother city’ and the satellite towns — Neyyattinkara (including Balaramapuram), Nedumangad (including Karakulam), Attingal and Varkala — are almost equidistant, and for such a setting proper linkages are vital.

Dr. Srinivasan says such a development would help to retain the present pattern of distribution of human settlement with rural-urban continuum. Moreover, there is an urgent need to halt further congestion in the city core and to evolve planning solutions at regional level.

Land acquisition

He wants the government to take up the proposed 60-km corridor on a priority basis as land can be acquired adjacent to this road and developed for residential, employment and commercial purposes. Development of a land bank will also be useful. As the cost of land in the mid-region is reasonably low, this proposal is likely to attract many investors. Public-private partnership with funding from private sector and budgetary support has also been suggested.

The territorial jurisdiction of the city police will soon be extended to Kazhakuttam and other outlying areas bordering Neyyatinkara, Attingal and Nedumangadu taluks in the district.

City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham said the police had proposed the creation of new administrative sub-divisions to monitor the city better. The key recommendations of the police included the creation of additional Deputy Commissioner of Police posts to head the Control Room, Traffic, Law and Order and Crime Investigations wings of the City Police Constabulary.

They have also proposed a police station exclusively for Technopark locality, the Information Technology hub of the district.

The City Police Control Room would be further modernised and shifted from its current location near the Secretariat to a new five-storeyed building under construction inside the precincts of the Armed Reserve Camp at Nandavanam. The police would maintain the existing control room to provide security to the Secretariat, the Accountant General’s Office and the District Treasury.

Important junctions, bus stops, roads and shopping localities in the city would come under the non-stop surveillance of police security cameras by September. The communications wing of the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (KELTRON) would implement the project, which was conceived for Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode cities by Additional Director General of Police and Transport Commissioner T. P. Senkumar.

The police said KELTRON would install 192 surveillance cameras in the city to help the police prevent crime and regulate traffic better. They said the security cameras were of high quality, tamper proof, possessed night vision capability and captured images in colour. They would be linked to the Police Control Room through a secure fibre optic network. Control room operators could pan, tilt or zoom the cameras at will.

The auto focus cameras could track and capture fast moving objects with “exceptional clarity” up to a distance of 500 m at night, including the registration numbers of vehicles.

Director General of Police Jacob Punnoose expressed the hope that the expansive security camera network would work as a “force multiplier” and enhance the ability of the police to detect and apprehend criminals (chiefly drug peddlers, pick pockets, chain snatchers and those who harass women in public places).

Inspector General of Police, Thiruvananthapuram Range, K. Padmakumar, said the cameras would instil a sense of security among law abiding citizens, chiefly women and children travelling alone. Potential offenders would feel a higher risk of being caught. The surveillance system would help the police optimise its manpower deployment.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated the first phase of the surveillance system here on Friday.

The bid process for the $ 2 Billion Vizhinjam deep-water port project in Trivandrum is nearing its close. The project’s nodal agency, Vizhnjam International Seaport Limited (VISL), recently released key project reports which have many areas of concern from the perspective of any proponent of Vizhinjam. I have discussed some of the most glaring issues on my blog, together with suggestions how the reports could have been made better and some longer-term proposals for the development of this mega-project! We need to gauge the true potential of Kerala’s biggest infrastructure project and plan to maximize its benefits before it is too late.

Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) may have all factors going for launching a second ship-building facility in Kerala at Vizhinjam near here.

This was alluded to by Mr K. Mohandas, Secretary, Union Ministry of Shipping, during his keynote address at the dedication ceremony of the CSL bollard pull test facility at Vizhinjam near here on Friday.

CSL WILLING

That CSL was considering this option seriously was made public in his address by the Kerala Ports Minister, Mr K. Babu, in the presence of Cmde K. Subramaniam, Chairman and Managing Director, CSL.

Earlier, Cmde Subramaniam had himself indicated that the 500-tonne bollard pull test facility could be the forbearer of a slew of projects that the CSL had in mind for the Vizhinjam area, nature’s best gift for the maritime industry as a whole.

The Vizhinjam pull test facility is the highest in terms of handling capacity, a good 2.5 times higher than the country’s second best at Ratnagiri.

The Kerala Ports Minister also laid the foundation stone for a drinking water supply and sanitation project that the CSL was taking up at Vizhinjam as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.

SECURITY CLEARANCE

Separately, the Minister said that the much larger Vizhinjam international port and deep sea container transhipment terminal project had reached a milestone with two shortlisted companies submitting their technical and financial bids.

But an empowered committee, set up by the State Government, has decided that the financial bids shall be opened only after the two companies, Mundra Port and the Welspun Consortium, get their respective security clearances from the Centre.

The State Government has also started lobbying with the Centre to get the Vizhinjam Port declared as a Customs Port under Section 8(A) of the Central Customs Act to entitle it to grant incentives to exporters.

CUSTOMS PORT

Vizhinjam has already been declared a Customs Port under Section 7 (A) of the Act but a notification under Section 8 (A) had to be issued if it was to get export promotion facility.

For this to happen, the port should build for itself a secure godown, boundary wall, access road and electricity for proper lighting.

The State Government has decided to complete all work in this connection by the first week of January 2012, Mr Babu said.

After years of heady promises and Budget proposals, the development of railway infrastructure in and around Trivandrum has fallen far short of where it should be given the growth of the city, high-technology and the upcoming deep water port at Vizhinjam. With the Indian Railways facing serious resource constraints, let’s take a pragmatic look at how we can achieve maximum impact with the least cost possible. Options for time-bound development of the key stations at Central, Kochuveli and Nemom, commuter rail services and cargo traffic are examined in this article (http://tvmrising.blogspot.com/2011/09/getting-back-on-track-railway.html).

The only beach that does get some amount of tourist action is Kovalam, a suburb of Thiruvananthapuram. Located about 13km south of Thiruvananthapuram’s um... central business district (or downtown, if you will), Kovalam is at that nexus of coconut water, backwater and kallu. It has three crescent-shaped beaches separated by rocky outcroppings and the sea itself is shallow for hundreds of metres, making it quite ideal for non-swimmers to clumsily wade through while pretending to swim. The sand is a curious shade of black and brown, thanks to the presence of thorium- and titanium-rich minerals, and the coconut palms lining the headlands of the beach complete the picture of a tropical paradise.

All these years, many style-conscious Malayalis have been travelling to Chennai or Coimbatore or Tirunelveli to shop for wedding sarees and even other special occasion wear.

Chennai has been the prime destination because of the vast array of wedding saree options that are available in the city.

Thiruvananthapuram seems to be catching up these days. Following on the heels of Kalyan Silks and Jayalakshmi Silks , which opened outlets to flaunt their silk brocades and wedding suits in the city recently is another star entrant.

The national award winner in silk saree designing, Pothys have started their shop here. The five-storeyed store spanning 2 lakh sq feet will stock a wide range of exclusive wedding silks, Kancheepuram, Arni and Dharmavaram silks. The store was inaugurated by megastar Mammootty on September 15 at MG Road. “We had a huge number of customers from Kerala visiting our Chennai outlets.

That convinced us to open an exclusive showroom in Thiruvananthapuram,” says Vivekanandan R, the Chennai based advertising manager of Pothys. So, here is one more reason to head for the capital city this wedding season.

The grand tale of how stupendous wealth reached the cellars of Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple will figure in the epic movie Marthanda Varma, the script for which is being penned by additional chief secretary and poet K. Jayakumar, a member of the expert panel that first saw the great treasure.

Jayakumar told Deccan Chronicle that in the film, being directed by Sreekkuttan, he was delving into the mind of the 18th century warrior king Marthanda Varma to find what prompted him to rebuild the temple, pour wealth into its vaults and dedicate the kingdom to the Lord.

“I am looking at Marthanda Varma as prince, ruler and man,” he said. “As he grew more powerful, he also became lonelier. He found no emotional support and turned more and more towards God.”

Adding impetus to this growing devotion was the king's realisation that a divine power had saved him on many occasions. “He finally realises that his only friend is the Lord,” said Jayakumar. “He leaves his kingdom to God and sets out to enhance the grandeur of the temple.”

Though Marthanda Varma's tale is riveting nobody has attempted to make a film on him after the 1933 silent movie which ran into many troubles. This created the film folklore that the subject is taboo.
But Jayakumar has no such fears.

“There will be no jinx since it will be a tribute to Lord Padmanabha too,” he said.

Pakistani writer Mohammed Hanif, whose visa file was misplaced by Indian Home Ministry, has been given the go-ahead to attend a literature festival in India, event organizers said on Wednesday. He is scheduled to take part in Kovalam Lit Fest Oct 1-2 in Thiruvananthapuram. He was granted visa after a spell of confusion on Wednesday afternoon, director of festival Binoo John told India Asia News Service IANS. “But logistical problems are still there. Hanif’s passport is in Islamabad and he is in Karachi. I am trying to work out shortest possible way to fly him to Kerala before the festival,” John said. Writers from Pakistan who take part in Indian literature festivals are often denied visas or are granted one at the last moment, making their journeys logistical nightmares. On Tuesday, Hanif expressed displeasure with loss of his visa file. “After waiting for my Indian visa for four weeks, have been told my file is lost somewhere in Home ministry. And this for a lit fest which is sponsored by Indian foreign min. So they invite you, then go ummm may be not (sic),” Hanif tweeted.
