Not to bring down the party but.

You really need to be creative here, almost all of those textures are from the 3D Warehouse, for example the Woolworth Building is one of the most obvious. I also see parts of my WTC Model in there :( Also Gotham? I'm sure you can come up with a much more creative name that hasnt already been taken, look: Palm Dunes, City City, Staunton, Neulite, Alex City.

These are just tips, I'm sure eventually your city will turn out to be one of the best ones here :)

i dont think your very creative making a city thats all most exactly the same as an existing city. Dude Gotham is an imaginary city and how cool is to have it as a model and yes i did copy and past textures but not from 3d warehouse actualy i saved them, like three of them are from 3DWH buts thats because its very hard to find textures. Also how do i make textures???????????????if i knew how to make textures then probably everything would be original.

Yes, Staunton is based off of an existing city, I know it dose look too much like New York, but hey, I like it. Palm Dunes has LA in it, City City is a mix of Chicago and Millwakee. But they still turned out great.

Gotham is from Batman, thats not very creative, you really cant come up with a better name? I'm sure your more creative than that. But if you like it, then stick with it, I guess.

I just dont like how you are using other people's textures to use, without their permission I see several of my textures there.

Making Textures has been stated in these fourms several times, how can you have missed it? CGII even gave a detailed list of Instructions, (I think it was in my thread)

Did you see it? I can post it here if you want.

I just was giving you advice, do you want me to stand back and just say "wow" or "cool". It dose get boring after a while.

^^^^^^Not for nothing Patrick, but I think your afraid this city will steal thunder from Staunton. You have to let people do their own thing and be creative on their own. Its not your job to police the forum of cityscape.

On a more positive note, love the city tanster, especially the thunder trick. Nice job!

Patrick
Feb 26, 2007, 11:00 PM
Actually I couldnt care less if "Gotham" got more attention than Staunton. I wonder how you miss all my posts in SSP Cityscape encouraging to show more, especially cities that have stopped.

I'm not policeing the fourm, I'm giving him advice which would later benifit his city. Saying "Wow" and "Good Job" just dosnt do the trick.

Tanster, it probably looks like I'm a total ass for attacking you like that, I was angry, but my main point is that you took other people's textures, without permission, or credit. I was a little too harsh because I cant take plagerisum, it has just happened to many times to me.

In the first pic, behind the Woolworth Building, I can clearly see the black box's textures are from my "World Trade Center & Surroundings" Model. In the 2nd pic, I see another black box (under the glass tower) way to the left uses my textures from the same model. In the 6th pic, the building directly behind, torwards the right, uses my 7WTC textures from my WTC 1.0 model.

You can use them, but with some credit.

Here is the list, exactly as CGII said it, but to Rowbk, who has, mysteriosuly, dissapeared.

:brickwall:

Turn on your computer.

Open your web browser. This is most likely Internet Explorer. It may go by a different name, but take some time to find it.

Go to Google.

That's http://www.google.com .

Click on the 'images' tab at http://www.google.com .

Type 'Building' into the query (that's the empty rectangle witht he flashing line).

Click 'Search.'

You will find multiple images to select.

Let's pick this one.

http://www.ihs.nl/photogallery/Building/images/IHS%20Building%202.jpg

Using your photo editing program, select out one face of the building, preferably the side whom says 'IHS.'

Copy this selection of the building.

Paste the copied selection into a new file whose edges just fit the edges of your selection.

Adjust the corners of your selection to fill the canvas.

Save this file in .jpg format.

If you don't understand this much, we've got a problem, and YOU're going to have to do some work on YOUR own to figure out how to do this. It's really quite simple.

But heres a question, any of your buildings have a name yet?

Patrick,

I agree completely with what you are saying. In all honesty I would've said the same thing, except maybe just not be too blunt about it. HOWEVER, if some people check out your postings specifically on Page 1 of "Palm Dunes - A Google Sketchup City", they'll see that you may sound pretty hypocritical regarding plagerism, not because you did it, but technically foxmtbr did it with the same 3D Warehouse during the start of Palm Dunes, and instead of saying "Hey, you plagerized!" you say "Hey, great work! Keep it up!". Since then I do not know if foxmtbr has asked for permission to continue using them, but I thought I'd kindly throw this out there before someone else slams it in your face like a banana cream pie to a clown.

Actually, Patrick, the term 'Gotham' far predates Batman. It was a nickname for Manhattanized urban areas from the 20's and 30's, though was used as early as 1807.

But it is very wrong to steal textures. Not only those glass boxes, but I see some Battery Park City textures from his WTC model and the Equitable Building textures from it as well. Definately a no no. At least give the guy credit.

I do not get textures from the 3d warehouse. (The only texture I have ever stolen from there was the seating for my stadium, taken from a Google-uploaded model. I'm sorry, Google!) For all my textures, I do exactly what is explained in CGII's post that has been quoted here, cropping pictures from Google images, or finding textures on there from sites which I have posted before. Now, in Tanster's city, there is one obvious example of a texture which is already used in my city (the tall blue building), but I cannot blame him because it is not my texture, it was taken from a texture site found on Google, so he has every right to use the texture as well.

Now, I believe you guys are talking more about him taking textures from Patrick's NYC models, which, if Patrick made them himself, is wrong, and Tanster should have gotten permission to use them first.

P.S. If you guys ever feel that I am plagarizing or anything, feel free to tell me, I wouldn't want to intrude others' rights. :)

Actually, he didnt, (as seen in his post below) except for the Stadium Seats Textures (which he already mentioned)

Actually, Patrick, the term 'Gotham' far predates Batman. It was a nickname for Manhattanized urban areas from the 20's and 30's, though was used as early as 1807.

Good Point. And Yes, the Equitable and Woolworth Textures are very noticable.

Tanster - I did not make the texture in the first pic. Tanster, I'd probably say take them off, but I dont want to look like an Ass, so I guess I'll let you use them.

My basic point is: I just got mad that you gave no credit or asked for permission. Its too late to ask now, This happened so many times (ESPECIALLY on 3D Warehouse) that I attacked you. Sorry for attacking you, you can use them if you want. Stauntons textures are all made by me (well modifed, etc.) but usuing others just dosnt make your city your own. If you really cant do it because you dont have the right programs, then you really have no choice, for example, like Foxmtbr, his textures were made for people like him, sortof.

Tanster
Feb 27, 2007, 5:42 AM
so those are your textures??????sorry for taking them i did not know.....If i knew that those where your textures (which i still think there not because i could of swore i got this from a website) then i would of never put them on. Yes some buildings are actualy buildings but those are my favorite buildings.

I'm referring to when you started. You even said yourself in the beginning of the thread that all you did was google "building textures" which would lead you to 3D Warehouse. I'm not mad or anything, but I just feel you're posting incorrect information. I'm also not tryin to point fingers at you foxmtbr, just kindly pointing it out.

If you look up at the picture above, you'll see these textures (taken from 3D Warehouse):

http://amazingtextures.com/textures/data/media/28/BUILD_093.jpg
http://amazingtextures.com/textures/data/media/28/BUILD_019.jpg

Although now I feel bad for straying the topic off course, I just wanted to kindly point this out to you, like I say, before someone else harshly does, and I don't want to come across as a jerk or anything. In fact, if I recall correctly, as long as you cite the source, and as long as you don't make money using hem, then it shouldn't violate plageristic laws, and if they do violate them, then I'll just keep my mouth shut

I didn't get those textures from the 3d warehouse, I got them searching Google images, from texture websites(not the 3D warehouse). That just means that someone on the warehouse found the same site I did for textures.

For example, you can find many of the textures I have used on these sites, stored in my favorites:
http://mayang.com/textures/Buildings/html/Modern%20Commercial%20Buildings/index.html

http://absolutetextures.com/cityscape.html

http://www.texturama.com/main.php

Obviously, since I found these textures on websites, many other people are capable of finding them too, so it doesn't surprise me at all that other people have the same ones.

P.S. I decided to check the URL on the images you posted, and it is www.amazingtextures.com. I checked the site, and yes, that is where I got them. I don't see what is wrong with getting textures from a texture site, lol... I'm even registered there, so it's all good.

Now, I think we've all (myself included, my apologies)hijacked Tanster's thread enough, maybe we should just let him get back to his city.

Yall need to take people's advice. We wasnt downing your city, he was saying his opinion, I kinda agree, some textures dont go well with the city. Your buildings need more quality, they seem rushed. The problem is many of your buildings are very plain, they just seem duplicated.

Take time on your buildings, brainstorm what you want your buildings to look like. Get some insperation, it actually works.

Maybe we are being to hard on you, how old are you?

Are you going to take me and Dac150's advice? Or ignore it?

Gotham, on the West Coast? Gotham, Next to Long Beach? Gotham, the size of a small downtown area? Lets be realalistic here, the city is to large to fit on that tiny island, plus a city with that many 20's - 30's buildings would not exist on the West Coast. I suggest something on the East Coast, sounds more realalistic, also find a vacant area for plenty of space for your city.

Gotham is going to be on the west coast and you'll see why later...
yes your right about the island thing i need to fix it
maybe Gotham can be in Catalina Island hmmmmm

Why dosnt Gotham get its own Island? :) BUT Still, Its in California, Gotham? Shouldnt it be named like Los Angeles or San Diego?

For Example here are some examples
- Santa Palmita
- San Hernandez
- San Fernango
- Palm View
- Palm Bay
- San Sanchez
- San Henando
- Palm Beach

I want Gotham to be close to Hollywood.
so i could seem like if Hollywood chose Gotham as a location for the Movie "batman" or show. You know what i mean?

if gotham gets its own island, i would have to make it because the only island in SC is Catalina island
What do you think?

I really think you should change the name if you want this city in that location. Sorry to bring up that debate again, but I'm sure I speak for some of you. I also think you should move it further away from LA. Kinda close in my opinion.

I agree, especially since there is already Oceanside, Palm Dunes, and Sun City, as well as LA and San Diego in the SoCal area, unless you want to put it in a totally different Sketchup city universe.

make it its own island with an underwater tunnel connecting it with the 710 in Long Beach or something...thatd be neat

You just cant have a large East Coast Styled City, On the West Coast, In Southern California, inside another Major City, it just dosnt make any sence at all.

If you want to keep it on the West Coast, I suggest moving up torwards Northern California, for Example, San Francisco has a good amount of 1930's buildings.

But I strongly reccomend a Island, you dont have to put it on an already existing island, such as Catalina Island, Whats wrong with putting it on its own island?

^ I agree. As with Dear Leader's city, let's just let Tanster do what he wants, it's his city after all. Sure, it might not make sense, but it isn't a real-life city anyways, so it doesn't have to make sense.

UPDATE!!!!!!!! i was busy this past week but i found sometime
well this is what I’ve been working on

Many of Gothams Theatres where built around the 1920s. Theatres such as The Gotham, The Ivry, and the Royal theatre. Gotham City and the Gotham theatre soon became well know in 1939 when the first, "the-batman" comic book came out using the City Gotham as the place where Batman fights crime
The Gotham theatre soon was one of the best theatres for its show "The Batman" which orginaly came from the comic book. Many new Theatres Where built (around Gotham blvd and Broadway)
In 1946 The city proposed a new GRAND theatre it was called the Gotham Broadway theatre. IT was completed in 1948. But by the 1960s many of the theatres where forgotten and abandon. Most of the attention went towards Hollywood with its movies and shows including Batman TV shows. Gotham theatres where no longer in service.
The renovation of the Ivry theatre has caused a spark (or flame lol) to the rest of the Gotham theatres many theatres have been renovated
with new signage and shows………………………

Gotham Theatre has been renovated with its original show "the batman"
