See this proposal !! BRPSE under the central govt is suggesting exactly
what HMT did. Why have some of the media and political parties not
concerned ?? Obviously because they did not get hold of it.

As of today, only FACT can be revived without selling land. The rest need
monetary support which can come only from land sale. In that way it is a
win-win deal - not only does the public sector is revived but excess
baggage of land is utilised for job generation.
Those who doubt the "legal rights" of HMT are basically
frauds trying to get the land in an underhand deal instead of open bid route
which HMT adopted.

Sick govt firms can get into real estate

Saubhadra Chatterjee / New Delhi February 05, 2008
The booming real estate market in India has caught the attention of the Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises (BRPSE) as a route for reviving sick public sector units.

BRPSE’s new chairman Nitish Sengupta has suggested that at least three ailing companies, which have been referred to the board, hive off some of their land and get into real estate development to become profitable again.

The companies are Bangalore-based Indian Telephones Industry (ITI), Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) Ltd and Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd (FACT) in Cochin. http://www.business-standard.com/common/news_article.php?autono=312622&leftnm=3&subLeft=0&chkFlg=

Demanding a "Golden IT corridor", the delegation has submitted a proposal for connecting Cochin with the IT hubs at Bagalore and Hyderabad. This route will reduce the distance between Bangalore and Cochin by around 120 kms.

"It could become a Golden IT corridor connecting three nerve centres of IT in south India and lead to development move," a member of the delegation said.

India’s Cochin International Airport is seeking a foreign partner to take a stake worth at least Rs25bn ($616m) in what would be a rare chance to take part in the country’s fast-growing aviation industry.

India’s fourth largest international airport, which began life a decade ago with contributions from southern Indians working in the Gulf, is considering the sale of about 25 per cent of the company to an outside investor
We’d prefer a tie-up with someone who’s got experience in aviation and who can help us expand in the aviation sector,” S. Bharath, the airport’s managing director, told the Financial Times.

The Cochin facility, which serves the southern state of Kerala, was one of the first Indian airports to be built largely with private-sector funds. The government of Kerala owns 36 per cent. The airport was set up partly in response to a surge in the number of migrant workers from the state going to the Gulf.

With air travel in India forecast to grow 7.7 per cent a year for the next two decades, New Delhi is seeking private sector help to overhaul international airports in New Delhi and Mumbai.

Mr Bharath said he had yet to begin marketing the stake to investors, though the airport had received a number of more general expressions of interest from foreign institutions.

He said these included Deutsche Bank. The German bank declined to comment.

Cochin’s air traffic grew 36 per cent in the year ending March to 2.6m, a figure that is expected to reach 3.5m this fiscal year.

Mr Bharath said the Cochin management was pursuing a plan under which it would invest Rs45bn to build an “airport city”. It would have a maintenance and repair centre, an aviation academy and hotels.

But an industry expert who declined to be named said Cochin needed to speed up its plans before it began to run into competition from new airports being built in the smaller Indian cities of Hyderabad and Bangalore.

He questioned whether the Kerala government, which is controlled by a leftist party, would allow the stake sale.

Kunjumon, 60m is never way too big for a highway designed for heavy load traffic as the Vallarpadam road. This is the standard for any highway built as per international standards. In fact NHAI is recommending a standard width of 60m for all highways in order for scope for future developments also.

If we have a look at the International standards for highways across the world we will recognize the shortcomings of our 4 lane roads. A minimum of 3.5m is adopted as a standard for a single lane in developed countries for highways catering to truck traffic. So a 4 laned road would have a carriageway of 3.5 X 4 = 14m. An outer shoulder of 3m and inner shoulder of 1.2m on both sides would necessitae another 8.4m. A median must be at least 5m. This itself would make the road 27m. Then you would expect an emergency lane and parking lane, drainage facilities, avenue trees and service lanes which would necessitate another 15-20m. This leaves just enough width for extra 2 lanes which could make an 8 lane road. :)

I think they have enough width to make the Seaport- Airport Road 8 laned. Mr.Kuryan who was the RBDC Chairman showed good vision in acquiring land, well enough for future expansion. The new Smart City road is 32m wide which is also commendable. In fact 32m must be the minimum width for any arterial road planned in future, if we dont want to see an MG Road scenario.(MG Road is 21m including footpaths)

The information is just a misquote. Because, TECOM had put this condition before the UDF government and the government agreed to this, but the project never took off. And then came the LDF Government, they took off the two major claus in the TECOM agreement with UDF the first was that the government is not ready to give Infopark to TECOM, and the second was that they cannot assure TECOM that no other IT city would come in kochi. That is becuase you cannot stop a city from going forward. And after all its just an evening daily that reported the news, it is just to stop HDIL from coming. Cochin needs schools having European and American syllabus for children of NRK' & NRI's.

NRK's ,PIO'S and NRI's children along with being able to readjust DESPERATELY need INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS or else how would they be able to cope with ICSC, CBSC, SSLC etc? Since the syllabus OVERSEAS is very easy, they would find it very hard to be on par with students back in Kerala. At the moment the nearest school having European syllabus is in Vazhakulam and it’s called the Bethlehem International school. It’s around 45 Kilometres from Cochin in Muvattupuzha. There are who have this issue of not having a European , American and other International syllabus schools in COCHIN( Kochi). NRK's , NRI's and PIO's need more incentive to return home and invest in COCHIN's economy. So far this issue hasn't been adressed by own politicians or developer. IT IS TIME WE DO!!! The AEROTROPOLIS being built by CIAL is an ideal place for a international school. CIBER City a megacity concept that I came up with would be another ideal location for International Schools. For more info on CIBER CITY please refer to this link http://cibercitycochinindia.blogspot.com/ The younger generation residing abroad also need to be catered to and their needs also need to be taken care of.

The biggest bane of most developing cities in the country is disorderly growth.
Kochi too has been facing this problem and can learn some lessons from the experience of other cities such as Bangalore, perhaps. It was considered one of the best places to be in some years ago, and now it is very much a chaotic city.
Suddenly, Kochi too has become a prime destination for many a venture. The list of such projects has been growing - the Vallarpadam international container terminal, Smart City, the Indian Institute of Technology project of the Cochin University of Science and Technology and Metro Rail.
It is perhaps in this context that the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewable Mission (NURM), launched on December 3, has particular significance for Kochi. One of the 27 cities selected in the category of population between 10 lakhs to 40 lakhs, Kochi would get assistance from the Union and State Government to raise the bar of infrastructure facilities, which are grossly inadequate as of now.
Choking roads
The population explosion and migration has put the city under strain, and it is unable to cope with burden of such a large number of people. "Within a couple of years Kochi's roads will be choked," said senior architect A.K. Jayachandran of Jayachandran Associates. "The city is developing left and right." Housing projects have grown exponentially, which alone shows the demand, said Mr. Jayachandran.
According to the note on NURM, cities and towns contribute over 50 per cent of the country's Gross Domestic Product and are central to economic growth. These cities can realise their full potential only when focussed attention is given to improving infrastructure.
NURM with a corpus of Rs.1 lakh crore intends to recharge these cities and help them cope with the massive growth.
Making available such substantial funds for urban facilities will bring in innovative infrastructure development with private-public partnership, said P.M. John, Secretary, Kerala State Housing Board.
The mission covers the viable risks in a project. Private players will be interested in planning projects under the mission, as the Government will provide a buffer for the initial losses, which are inevitable in infrastructure projects, said Mr. John. The payback period for these projects is usually long, he added.
Major problems of Kochi are perhaps water-logging, transportation and water supply, said Mr. John. The funds can be utilised to tackle these problems.
A sound master plan with the help of satellite services will be required to make zoning changes, said Mr. John. A number of projects that have been envisaged by private players can be realised through the mission by bringing in more transparency.
Guiding force
There is a need for a guiding force to implement the mission's aim in a city's perspective, said Mr. Jayachandran. A group of experts or a social organisation will be needed to implement the projects the right way.
More open areas have to be found and the development of the city has to be spread there, Mr. Jayachandran said. As far as Kochi is concerned, it has a limitation on the West side, so development should be pushed to the eastern side, he said. "There is also more land available there," he added.
Framework
The mission framework is for a period of 20 to 25 years with five-yearly updates. Each city has to identify projects and strategies, which will be vetted by a Central sanctioning and monitoring committee in the Ministry of Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation.
A national steering group chaired by the Minister of Urban Development will consider the requests from the States for inclusion under NURM. These will be scrutinised by the sanctioning and monitoring Committee. At the State-level, a steering committee chaired by the Chief Minister will decide and prioritise projects under the mission.
The Centre, State and the local body in the ratio of 50:25:25 will finance projects in the case of Kochi, it being in the category of a city with a population of over 10 lakhs.
The States and the urban local bodies need to undertake certain reforms too to be able to get their projects sanctioned. Kochi Corporation will be able to meet most of the reforms, said C.K. Manisankar, Deputy Mayor of the Corporation. Some of them are already in progress, he said.
The council will form an expert committee and decide what projects will be submitted under NURM.
* * *
Reforms at the local level
Certain reforms at the State and municipal levels are mandatory for the implementation of the JNNURM. The State-level reforms required are:
Effective implementation of the decentralisation initiative as envisaged in the Constitution (seventy-fourth) Amendment Act, 1992.
Repeal of Urban Land (Ceiling and Regulation) Act, 1976.
Reform of Rent Control laws, by balancing the interests of landlords and tenants.
Rationalisation of stamp duty to bring it down to no more than 5 per cent within 7 years.
Enactment of a public disclosure law.
Enactment of a community participation law, so as to institutionalise citizens' participation in local decision-making.
Association of elected municipalities with the city planning function.
(In respect of schemes for basic services to the urban poor and schemes for water supply and sanitation, the two mandatory reforms - repeal of the Urban Land Ceiling Act and reform of rent control laws will be treated as optional).
* * *
Activities admissible under JNNURM
Urban Renewal - that is redevelopment of inner (old) city areas (this would include items such as widening of narrow streets, shifting of industrial and commercial establishments from non-conforming (inner-city) areas to `conforming' (outer-city) areas to reduce congestion, replacement of old and worn-out water pipes by new/higher capacity ones, renewal of sewerage/ drainage/ solid waste disposal systems, etc). Land acquisition cost will not be financed under this component of the programme.
Water Supply, including setting up desalination plants, where necessary.
Sewerage and solid waste management.
Construction and improvement of drains/ storm water drains.
Urban transport.
Laying/ improvement/ widening of arterial/ sub-arterial roads and bridges to remove transport bottlenecks.
Laying of ring roads and bypasses around metro and mega cities, provided certain cost recovery measures such as toll charges are built-in.
Construction and development of bus and truck terminals.
Environmental improvement and city beautification schemes.

Smart City construction to start in March !!

SmartCity enters India; to develop 246-acre IT/ITES SEZ

New Delhi, Feb 7 (PTI) Infrastructure development firm SmartCity is foraying into India's booming property market with plans to develop a 246-acre IT/ITES Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Kochi at an initial investment of Rs 1,500 crore.

Dubai-based SmartCity, which has formed a 84:16 joint venture with the Kerala government for the SEZ project, has already received the in-principle approval from the Centre.

"We will create offices and infrastructure technologies in the SEZ. Initial investment has been estimated at Rs 1,500 crore but as we want to expand the project up to 400 acres, so eventually the cost will also increase," SmartCity Executive Director Fareed Abdulrahman told PTI.

The company has already acquired the 246-acre land for Rs 95 crore and holding discussions with the state government for expansion of one of the largest IT/ITES SEZs, he added.

Abdulrahman further said the final investment picture would be cleared once the master plan is ready.

The company expects to receive the formal approval from the Central government during the next Board of Approval meeting. "Once the formalities are done, we will start the construction in the first quarter of the next fiscal and expect it to complete in 10 years," he said.

Kochi, Feb 12 : The foundation stone for the country's first full-fledged marina to house around 50 yachts will be laid at Bolgatty Island here March 1 by Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan. It will be the world's only marina with a golf course.

A marina provides docking, storage, maintenance and other facilities for boats.

Compared to marinas elsewhere in the world, the Kochi marina is billed to be a unique one in more ways than one.

Speaking to IANS, Cheriyan Phillip, chairman of state-owned Kerala Tourism Development Corp (KTDC), which will build and operate the marina, said this would be the only marina with a golf course.

The marina, between the Kochi Marine Drive and Bolgatty Island, can accommodate close to 50 luxury yachts.

"We plan to develop this in two stages with the first phase to be completed in less than 18 months at a cost Rs.80 million ($2 million). Of this the central government has given Rs.40 million," Phillip said.

K.G. Mohanlal, managing director of KTDC, said that the proposed marina would be eco-friendly in keeping with the ambience of Bolgatty Island.

"At other marinas in the world one sees more of concrete structures and less of greenery. But in Kochi it would be more greenery and less of concrete."

There will be a marina house built in traditional Kerala architectural style with nearly two-dozen state-of-the-art rooms and recreation facilities.

"This marina, when complete, is going to give a huge boost to tourism in the state because this will be a stopover for all yachts that go from the Middle East to the Far East and vice versa," Mohanlal pointed out.

The marina will be built jointly by KTDC and another state-owned organisation KITCO, which will look into the engineering aspects.

The Marina's got a golf course??

Cochin Shipyard plans IPO. Many private shipyards are being planned elsewhere in the country. This is a good time for CSL to make this move.

Cochin Shipyard is in the process of seeking an approval from the government to launch an initial public offering (IPO). The shipyard is looking at raising the amount so as to set up a new dry dock, reports Business Standard.

The shipyard has submitted a concept paper to the government. It is looking at launching an IPO before the end of this year, sources said. It is believed that, the new dry dock complex will require an investment of about Rs 8 billion, and will have a capacity of 175,000 DWT, sources added.

NEW DELHI, JANUARY 8: Less than a month after the Kerala Government finally signed the state support agreement for four-laning the two major national highways in the state, the state PWD is set to revive a Rs 10,000-crore mega expressway project connecting the northern and southern tips of the state. The 520-km expressway connecting Thiruvananthapuram with Kasargode will cut down travel time from the 12 hours at present to just over five hours. Incidentally, the expressway— the biggest-ever infrastructure project in the state— was initially proposed by the previous A K Antony Government, but had run into stiff opposition from the LDF which was then in the Opposition. "We are trying to revive the North-South expressway project and trying to build a consensus to sort out all issues of concern. The project will mean a lot for the state as it will cut down travel time and give a boost to the economy. Various financial models like Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT), annuity, institutional funding through international agencies, like the World Bank, are being considered. We are looking at a timeframe of five to six years to plan, construct and operationalise the project," Kerala PWD Minister Mons Joseph told The Indian Express.
The minister was in New Delhi for an even more surprising appointment. He met the Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport & Highways T R Baalu to get more of the state's national highway stretches expanded. While earlier attempts by the minister to persuade Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and even interventions by the PM failed to make the LDF Government agree to a toll-based expansion of its national highways, the state has now approached Baalu's office with a wishlist.
"We have asked the Union Minister to also help expand NH 220 connecting the Periyar Tiger Reserve besides upgradation of roads to the famous pilgrim centre at Sabarimala. Under NHDP VII we have requested that decongestion plans for Kochi also be covered along with four-laning of the NH 213 between Palakkad and Kozhikode," Joseph said.
Baalu promptly agreed to expedite four-laning on NH 47 & 17, institute a feasibility study for NH 213, include NH 220 and NH 49 in NHDP IV and also allow decongestion measures for Kochi. The minister has also assured to look into improving roads to the Nedumbassery airport and the Vallarpadam container terminal.
Joseph explained his Government's sudden turnaround on the larger perspective of public interest. "We have just signed the state support agreement for expansion of NH 17 and NH 47 with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Once these two highways are four-laned people will be able to understand why it is important for the state's development. The Government's initial stand was against toll-based project as it will burden the common man, but it is not a bad idea keeping in mind long-term benefits, besides in a tourism dependent state like ours, good connectivity is crucial. Hence, the decision was taken in the larger public interest," he said.
The change of stance also has much to do with the Centre's final threat to the state. After having failed to dissuade the LDF Government from its anti-toll stand, it had warned that Kerala would lose out on infrastructure development while other states, including Left-ruled West Bengal, would sprint ahead if they did not agree to the model. Kerala has just 33.6 km of four-lane highways. Of the 1523 km of highways in the state, just 411 km are two-lane.

Kerala ranked the most investor friendly state in the country!

Kerala leads in the overall investor friendliness parameters followed by Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, according to the latest study by KPMG.
....
The state that has just 3.5% of the total population accounts for around 12% of the non-farm jobs generated in India during the last decade.
...

Unemployment in Kerala declined from 19.1% in 2002-03 to 9.4% in 2006-07 and the state has generated 560,000 new jobs during the same period, shattering the myth that the state remains to be a money order economy supported by its huge population of overseas workers.

Advocate General clears HMT-HDIL land deal

You should have seen today's Asianet !! They were struggling
for a cover up, accusing AG for not toeing their lies. AG on Friday
gave the legal opinion that the exemption given to HMT entitles
the PSE with right for sale. Govt of Kerala has decided to back the
land deal that happened through open bidding in which 11 companies took part.
Asianet was giving wide publicity for the report of secretaries of various
depts which suggested cancellation of the deal. But final legal opinion
from Advocate General who is taking up the case in HC on behalf of govt
has has held the land deal legal. Asianet now wants govt to go into court
and lose the battle.

Anyway, its real intention will never work. The land will not come for
a rebid, which some of its backers want to have a go.

Here's a report from Manorama

Once the PIL in High court is sorted out favorably, HDIL will be free to go
ahead with Cyber City. Since the govt has agreed to the land sale, there
are no outstanding issues. Only thing to watch is how long its going to take.

HDIL has put up huge billboards of Cybercity all over the city. I could count over half a dozen in between Nedumbassery and Palarivattom.
There are innumerable smaller ones too. Wonder why these ooth congress
and bada congress left them untouched :) Also, congress MLA KV Thomas took part in the foundation stone function

Now its interesting what happened to Bangalore land sale of HMT. This was
done under Congress govt in Karnataka. Why are they silent on it.
This is just competitive race to destruction. When LDF rules cong whines

Twelve families from the Edappally north village and 44 families from the Edappally south village received plots of three cents each. Two acres have been identified for the rehabilitation of the displaced at Thuthiyoor near Kakkanad.
Draw of lots

Mayor Mercy Williams drew the first lot and councillor Anil Kumar drew the second lot at a function held at the collectorate.

Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish drew the remaining lots. Deputy Collector (Land Acquisition) R. Ramadevi and special tahsildar for land acquisition for the rail link Babychan were also present.

With this, the path has been cleared for the completion of the land acquisition process for the rail link.

The Collector had announced last week that documentation and sale of the land acquired in Edappally North and South villages and Vaduthala for the rail link would be completed by Saturday. http://www.hindu.com/2008/02/19/stories/2008021961160300.htm

Here is a great news on Metro.

Metro will be extended to Airport City

That is a very sensible thing to do ... the metro doesnt have much significance unless the Airport is part of it. Wonder if they will eventuallly have a parallel metro line from aerotropolis to Tripunithura via the seaport-airport route or will there just be a line from Kakkanad westwards to the planned route probbaly meeting at Edapally?

LDF fully support HMT-HDIL land deal

LDF directed govt to support HMT-HDIL land deal as legal experts have opined that
HMT was well within its right. It is also heard that Central govt also has the same
opinion. With this now, the matter can be handled in court without any confusion.

Some NGO which is a puppet of a shady real estate company has filed a PIL
in HC. Now this stand to collapse. Alas these frauds who pretend to be "justice
seekers" may escape, even after the case collapses. People should not let
these criminals and their aides in Asianet go scot free.

There is also a funny writ petition saying that Rs.130,000/cent bid by HDIL
in 2005 is less than the present market price which is Rs.700,000/cent.
This is a very weak case which will collapse because the Rs.130,000/cent offered by
HDIL is the highest till 2005 to be registered in Kalamassery !! If there were a
Rs.700,000 offer then he/she could have taken part in the bid process and won the land.

LDF discusses HMT land deal

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The LDF State committee met here on Tuesday to discuss the position the State government should take when the public interest litigation questioning the validity of the Kochi land deal between the HMT and a Mumbai-based company comes up for hearing in the High Court.

The LDF State committee meeting was in the context of conflicting views within the front, as well as the officialdom, on whether the HMT could sell the land (40 hectares) given to it by the government specifically for industrial purpose. A committee headed by the Chief Secretary had proposed invalidating the sale, while the Advocate General had given the government the opinion that the HMT was well within its rights in executing the sale.

The LDF State committee meeting was not followed by the usual media briefing by its convener. According to informed sources, the meeting decided to direct the State government to go as per the Advocate General’s opinion while filing its affidavit in the High Court, keeping aside the views expressed by the committee headed by the Chief Secretary. — Special Correspondent http://www.hindu.com/2008/02/20/stories/2008022055550400.htm

After HC decides on it there may be one more round at SC if the mafia are that

The foundation stone for the country's first full-fledged marina to house around 50 yachts will be laid at Bolgatty Island in Kochi on March 1 by Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan. It will also be the world's only marina with a golf course, and is coming up on five-acre land.
The marina, when complete, will give a huge boost to tourism in the state because it will be a stopover for all yachts that sail from the Middle East to the Far East and vice versa. The eco-friendly marina, between Kochi Marine Drive and Bolgatty Island, will accommodate close to 50 luxury yachts, and provide docking, storage, maintenance and other facilities for boats.
The prospects for the project are bright: several luxury yachts travel from the Gulf region with the Far East as destination passing through Kochi. At present, there is no intermediate berthing place for them once they leave Dubai. The marina will exploit this opportunity.
Although the project was announced last May, it could not take off due to technical hassles. Now that all the technical hitches have been resolved, Kerala Tou-rism Development Corporation has appointed Kerala Industrial & Technical Consultancy Organisation as consultant. KTDC will build and operate the marina.
They plan to develop it in two stages with the first phase to be completed in less than 18 months at a cost Rs 8 crore. Out of this, the Central government has given Rs 4 crore.
The complete pontoon (small boats) jetty will be made in marine quality glue laminated yellow agathis for docking cross-ties, rotational moulded polyethelyne pontoons filled with expanded polysterene, dock cleats, etc. The marina will have a wet dock and machines for carrying out repairing works, two luxury cruisers and five jet skis.
A marina house will be built in traditional Kerala architectural style with nearly 24 rooms and recreation facilities.
"There won't be any new concrete structures that will destroy the greenery and heritage architecture of the surrounding buildings, since it is coming up on a heritage precinct, near the Bolgatty Palace. The marina house is designed to complement the existing Dutch style palace," said Cyriac Davies, Joint GM, Kitco. He added that a major part of the project would be complete within six months and launched in later this year.

Kerala's tech university set for upgrade

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 20: The central government is set to take over the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and upgrade it as an Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST).

"At today's (Wednesday) cabinet meeting, we decided to inform the central government to take over CUSAT and to upgrade it as an IIEST," Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told reporters after the weekly cabinet meeting here.

"We have also asked the central government to see that the reservation system presently followed is kept intact," he said.

IIESTs are proposed by the central government to meet the growing demand for setting up highly rated Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) by every state in the country.

The central government has selected seven universities for upgradation as IIESTs.

The Kerala IIEST is expected to reserve 50 percent seats for domicile candidates and rest will be open for students from other states.

VEEGA Hitech Amusement City

Veegaland, one of India’s premier amusement parks, is planning a Rs. 770 crore Tourism Township `Veega Amuse City’ at Pallikkara near Kakkanad in Ernakulam district. This mega project spanning 64 acres will come up right next to Veegaland and have industrial and commercial complexes, ultra-modern residential complexes, convention centres, star hotels and a new hitech amusement park. Estimated to cost Rs. 770 crores, the project will be executed in different stages. A 30 crore 3-star theme resort is expected to be ready by the end of 2009.This sprawling resort, set in 2 acres, will have 126 rooms and all modern facilities.

The proposed new amusement park will be totally different from the Veega Land. It will have imported hi-tech thrillers and world-class rides, mostly indoor ones, so that visitors can enjoy them throughout the entertainment centre for children, making learning a fun experience. This centre will help them to easily understand different branches of Science, made simple through interesting practical applications. Apart from the amusement park, this project also offers shopping malls, IT-business space, convention centres, high-end apartments and luxury hotels with state-of-the-art facilities. The world class convention centres will be suitable for all events – big or small. Everything from international conferences to the tourism affairs to business meet can be conducted here. The hotel complex which will have 500-plus rooms with different star ratings, will offer the ultimate in hospitality and luxury.

The Veega Amuse City’ will be self-sufficient in terms of water and electricity as it will have large-scale rain water harvesting systems and high-capacity generators capable of generating enough power for the entire project. The `Veega Amuse City’, on completion, boasts of being the biggest tourist spot in South India. It will also, as a commercial project and tourist destination, put Kochi on the global platform and help further its business and industrial sector growth. The future development of Cochin city will be focussed towards the eastern region. Besides, this project will also generate substantial amounts for the State Government as tax revenue.

Veega Land, which has committed itself to the cause of protecting nature, plans to dedicate 10 per cent of the project area to this cause by planting rare trees and herbs, which will act as a Green Belt for the project. This mega project which will employ 1,700 people directly and around four times the numbers indirectly, is expected to boost the tourism industry in Kerala. Besides being strategically located next to the proposed Smart City, Veega Amuse City will definitely make Kochi a much sought-after destination, attracting visitors from across the world.

The first venture of Veega Holidays was Veega land which was opened to the public in 2000.To date, over 55 lakh people have visited Veega Land, of which 20 per cent were from other states. The Park provides employment to over 200 people directly and 500 people indirectly. Veega Holidaya is also planning to set up a new amusement park at Mumbai, which is estimated to cost around Rs 150 crore. Around 150 acres of land has already been identified near Panvel on the Mumbai-Pune Highway for this ambitious project.

Development bonds for Kochi mooted

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A greater Kochi region consisting of Kochi city and several adjoining towns will require funds of the order of Rs.20,000 crore for major infrastructure development projects in transport, housing and other sectors.

The funds could be raised through a process similar to the one adopted for building the Nedumbasserry airport or by issuing greater Kochi development bonds. This was one of the suggestions put forth by V. Suresh, former Chairman and Managing Director of Housing and Urban Development Corporation (Hudco), at a discussion on ‘Kochi alive’, organised by the Kerala Management Association to mark the management day celebrations on Thursday. Mr. Suresh said Kochi had no master plan and called for preparation of a Kochi 2021 master plan this year itself. The floor area ratio (FAR) restrictions enforced on Kochi were not conducive to the growth of the city. He said Hyderabad which had recorded high growth, did not have FAR restrictions.

Rs.2000 cr Sky City project at Kochi

UAE-Kerala in Dh1.8bn Sky City plan
By VM Sathish on Saturday, February 23 , 2008

(SUPPLIED)

UAE officials are working with the Government of the Indian state of Kerala to develop a Dh1.8 billion Sky City project at the coastal city of Kochi. The proposal involves building an eight kilometre-long elevated highway above an existing 4.2km bridge that carries traffic over water.

The new road would be lined on both sides with 20,000 square metres of residential and commercial space.

Kochi is a booming commercial city in the southwest of the state flanked by the Arabian Sea on one side and hills on the other.

Sky City has been proposed as a solution to the city’s growing traffic congestion problems, which would not put pressure on the limited land resources in the area.

Three-storey apartments, shopping centres, leisure facilities and other amenities such as pedestrian paths and car parks would be built on the highway platform. There could also be helipads and marine transport.

“The UAE Government is currently studying the Sky City project in Kochi,” said Ashok Lal G, general manager of projects at the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation.

“The project involves the construction of a bridge up to eight kilometres long over an existing bridge and will use the space above it to build shopping complexes, offices and residential buildings.

“There is an acute shortage of land in Kochi to develop new roads and people are reluctant to give up their land for road development.

“Last December, a UAE delegation led by Younis Al Khoori, secretary of the UAE Ministry of Finance and Industry, and other senior government officials visited Kerala to boost UAE investment.

During their visit it was announced a new investment company, a joint venture involving the governments of the seven emirates, would invest in Kerala projects.”

The UAE has experience of reclaiming space for construction through projects, such as Dubai’s Palms and the World and Abu Dhabi’s Breakwater and Al Raha Beach development.

“We are trying to use Dubai’s expertise in growth and infrastructure development. Part of Dubai is reclaimed from the sea and we are confident Dubai companies will be actively involved in the development of the 20m to 30m high bridge above the existing Maradu-Thevara bridge and the development of residential and commercial buildings.”

The official said the Kerala chief minister’s office had approved the Sky City proposal.

Once the feasibility study is completed a memorandum of understanding would be signed by the two governments setting out details of the project’s structure and financing.

“The Government of Kerala will have to grant rights to build over the existing bridge and the Coastal Zone Authority will have to approve the project.”

The proposed development would have supermarkets, community halls, entertainment centres, restaurants, hotels, garment and jewellery shops, car showrooms, offices and business centres.

The plan also involves provisions for amusement centres, healthcare facilities, water sports, an oceanarium and a theme park.

The state government is working with Tecom to develop Kochi SmartCity, an information technology infrastructure project. Original News : http://www.business24-7.ae/ (http://www.business24-7.ae/cs/article_show_mainh1_story.aspx?HeadlineID=2748)

Kochi: Waste disposal has been posing problems for the civic authorities. The issue had generated much heat and dust recently when the garbage got piled up in city corners. There was even a threat of outbreak of epidemics arising out of the unhygienic conditions prevalent in the city.

Treating the waste to make products that are beneficial to the population has been a pet theme for planners and authorities. The Cochin Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as part of its 150th anniversary, has launched a novel project for waste management. The project named Cochin Waste 2 Energy is estimated to cost Rs.15 crore.

It is being implemented by the chamber with technical assistance from W2E USA Inc., an American firm promoting energy diversity.

The waste treatment process involves gasification which is environment-friendly, according to Renee L. Comly, president of the firm. The process helps suppress harmful emissions and reduce the impact of global warming unlike incineration and other ordinary methods for disposal of non-biodegradable waste, she says.

The municipal waste and industrial waste are collected and fed into the gasifier.

Agro and animal waste, e-waste, biomedical waste can be processed without any sorting. The gasification converts the waste into a clean fuel, known as syngas. This fuel can produce electricity without creating harmful emissions.

The project is to be set up in one acre area in Wellingdon island, according to Jose Dominic, president of the Cochin Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

The capacity of the project would be 48 tonnes per day. The chamber proposes to collect waste from hotels and industrial establishments. The electricity generated from the project would be provided to the grid of the Kochi port.

Oops. I overlooked it. Probably your are right. Actually, there is no existing

this is confusing.
Yasorams project was initially of the order of 1000 cr. It was supposed to go from

That makes it 8 km. This is just my guess.
