- Hey guys, this is Matt again, my last account got screwed up somehow, so I made a new one lol
- I edited the list slightly, added the sq ft of Avalon Mall, and added Penhorn Mall to 7th place :)
- I do not consider HSC and HSC annex the same mall, as they are across the street and not connected
I do realize that they are owned by the same company and all, but the sources I found (from the owner of the malls lol)
listed them as seperate.
- Just for fun I expanded the list to include all the malls (I could find) over 200,000 sq ft
- If anyone has any other malls they think should be on the list let me know :)
- There are still a few unknowns on the list (10,11,15,23,23,24,25,27)
- I added a "status" column, if anyone can correct me on those that would be great :)

And as for malls that are doing badly these days, I know this isnt on the list but the maritime mall that is probably in the worst shape is Parkway Mall in Saint John. Has anyone visited that place as of late? its an absolute desert.

I agree with you, I just do not understand why ! This mall is in the core of Saint John retail sector. With a strong vision, this mall could solve the space problem in Mccalister place

A few incoherent notes at 3 in the morning:

Lancaster's in fairly decent shape, with Zellers and Superstore for anchors. A handful of vacant stores though. With the new power centre down the road looking like it will go ahead, though, I wonder how long that will last. (Trivia bit: Lancaster Mall was, as far as I know, the first enclosed mall in New Brunswick.)

Fredericton Mall is in the process of being converted into a strip mall/power centre like the Moncton Mall-turned-Northwest Centre; they've cancelled the leases of most of their inline stores but others are still going. The section near Sobeys has been completely gutted.

Brookside Mall in Fredericton has all its anchors intact, but that's everything good I can say. Part of the mall has been converted into a call centre, and a good 20-30% of the store space remaining is vacant. Wal-Mart is opening a northside store within weeks....that may be it for Brookside.

Another one is Prince Edward Square in Saint John (not sure what its GLA is), although it's pretty much dead now, with Zellers having left years ago and Save-Easy giving way to Giant Tiger.

Parkway Mall is a lost cause.

What about Northumberland Square in Miramichi? It was doing pretty well last time I was up there, except for having Bargain Giant as one of the major anchors...though I'm not sure if it's 200K.

Chaleur Centre...geez...I never saw a mall that looked that abandoned in my life til I went to Bathurst last summer. Wal-Mart and Kent both bolted for new locations by the KC Irving Arena, and Sobeys is gone too. There was a new, cheap sign above the main entrance listing the stores that were still there. The "big" mall in town is now definitely Bathurst Mall (anchored by Zellers and Sears, though only 20 or so inline stores).

I *think* both Northumberland Square and Bathurst Mall are still bigger than (anchorless) Park Lane if you factor in the anchors.

Bridgewater Mall surprised me as being larger than I thought it would for a town of less than 10,000; though given that it draws from the entire south shore it's understandable.

Kudos to Mayflower Mall for easily coping with the loss of Wal-Mart to a larger freestanding store around the corner - Winners and SportChek will take over the space.

Other small-town malls (all anchored by at least one major department store) that probably don't meet the threshold: Exploits Valley Mall in Grand Falls NL, Trinity-Conception Square in Carbonear, Truro Mall, Aberdeen Mall in New Glasgow, Yarmouth Mall, Sugarloaf Mall in Campbellton, Gateway Mall in Sussex.

Yeah, I think Phase I of Dartmouth Crossing is supposed to be 1,500,000 sf of retail, and 2,200,000 sf by 2009.

Big Box seems to be in, and malls not so much :shrug:

From my recollection, though I wasn't actively keeping track, I believe there were only 1 or 2 vacancies in Mayflower when I was home over Christmas break, and there were no temporary stores in the main inline store areas (the only temporary locations were kiosks). I may be a little off, but if I don't get home over spring break to confirm, I'll get a friend to confirm it for me.

One reason, I suspect, that Mayflower was able to do this was that the freestanding store is leasing land from the same company that owns the mall, giving Wal-Mart less power to keep an active lease at the mall in its empty location while operating its freestanding location. That gave the mall freedom to renovate the area sooner. They've confirmed three more stores in the renovated area, though two are relocation. At this stage of the game, only confirmed leases will be released to avoid jeopardizing the lease negotiations. "The Rolling Phones" (Aliant) and Music World are relocating to larger stores in the new section, and Fairweather is a new store coming to the area opening in the renovated section. Most of the renovated area is undergoing lease negotiations with prospective tenants from my understanding. Some sections of the renovated area are due to open later in the spring, but again I'll confirm what details are out within the next couple of weeks.

As for the Fredericton assortment of malls, kirjtc2 pretty much nailed them all.

Scotia Square is not bussling by any means but it was doing a lot worse before Pudy's Wharf office towers were built in the late 80s. Now the mall is just one giant food court.

A mall that's also suffering is Park Lane, the whole second floor is vacant. Interesting because Spring Garden Road is doing pretty well, and Park Lane has a movie theatre.

Brunswick Square has about 72,000 sq.ft. of retail lease space. The mall management has recently started converting some common area into rentable space - there have been several new kiosks added including Pink! Sushi, Pretzel Maker and a new Atlantic Lottery booth.
