Sigh. My aunt was convinced she was going to get flooded out of Steveston so I had to go calm her down. Got some pics of the extremely high tide though:

New ONNI development, pumphouse to the left. City crews were standing by, looking for flooding I guess,

oddly North-West Produce CLOSED down a few months back..... maybe they moved to the Valley but I doubt it as their phone number is NOT IN SERVICE.

I was wondering what was to happen with the building. good to see its gone now and will be a prime redevelopment site on terminal.

The building has actually been vacant for a while now, since at least last summer. They've had problems in the past with squatters using the loading docks to camp out so they put up plywood hoarding and some mornings there's a security car parked there. But that didn't stop them from getting inside the building as that's likely the cause of this fire. I'm sure this building was going to be gone in the next couple of years anyway. Out back, however, a luxury car dealership was using some of the land for their new car storage. I wonder if any of those cars were affected.

Thanks for the link! On my way home today I noticed they moved all the cars to that street that runs parallel to Terminal. I guess they have no where else to put them. There's still a few cars behind the fence though...

This confirms a longstanding suspicion of mine that the streetlights on residential side streets are spaced closer together in the City of Vancouver than in neighbouring municipalities, resulting in a more well lit street network. You can also pick out exactly where industrial land use occurs based on the presence of floodlights with a different colour hue than conventional street lights, with the exception being the container terminals on Burrard Inlet. One of the first things I noticed when I moved to Toronto is that the streetlights are generally white-ish instead of the orange I have grown up with in Vancouver. Interesting to note that UBC shies away from the orange sodium vapour lamps street lights used almost everywhere else.

I was in Poco recently, and noticed that a large section of Shaughnessy has white LED streelights instead of sodium vapour lamps now. I presume use will continue to expand.

except North Korea has *NO* street lighting that can be seen from space. (except for pyongyang, for propaganda purposes).

While the surrounding countries have more light pollution at night since 1992, N Korea doesn't.

Why? I see those signs in many places, having huge flocks of birds at a station's entrance is an incredible announce and actually a health hazard as well, they are there simply because people keep pouring bird feed all over the ground there, sometimes it gets really disgusting.

I just meant to say that those people that feed the birds around there are probably not going to care about a sign. And the people who would care about it aren't feeding pigeons on Granville Street.

I don't know about the history of the building itself, but during the late 80's when the Vancouver Medical Dental building was redeveloped into what is now Cathedral Place, the additional lots along Hornby Street, including Hy's, were to be assembled into the new development. After repeated offers the owners of the Hy's building refused to sell; believing that they could delay or even prevent the new development from going ahead without them. At some point the City allowed the Cathedral Place development to go ahead, leaving the Hy's building as one of the City's most noticeable "orphan" lots.

It's only about 30 feet wide, so would be difficult to redevelop. I think Hy's does alright anyway so there probably won't be any change anytime soon.

Unless they did some small development in between the two towers. Interesting that the son of the founder of Hy's is currently is the president of the Keg. Sounds like the Hy's Hornby location is still owned by the Aisenstats family.

Lots of lightning again today, tried to snap some pics but it was futile with a crappy Samsung Galaxy. Did get one of a great sunset, the pic didn't turn out well but the low lying clouds really made it spectacular.

I loved the design of the old stations. White, red, green, blue. The lettertype they used on everything and the meshing (when it was clean) that under light was semi-transparent but at night you could see straight through. Everything was tubed. The signage (especially the really old stuff) had fine little details which you could see up close but otherwise made sense from a distance. The fluorescent lighting made the open spaces feel warm in almost any weather.
The new stations have too much glass. Too much exposed concrete. The halide lamps add modernism but the platforms feel cold.

My understanding is glass wall improves visibility leading to safer feeling of the patron in the area. Exposed concrete is probably for lower maintenance.

Sounds like a fun time. The weather actually had little to do with the lack of people in my photo - it was actually fenced off. The lens of my crappy point and shoot was shoved through the holes in the fence. :)

Don't have a great picture of the fence but here it is from down the street

There wasn't even a reflecting pool at that point. They had it fenced off (and hidden) during construction and throughout the Olympic period. I guess they were worried about people climbing onto it.

Wow, what photos, thanks people. Jimby, you get the Oscar for this page, anyway, they're fantastic.
OK the question; where the color picture series begins, second photo down, Howe Street, with antique police car ....
Is the green "lantern" structure that seems to protrude, and sort of "overhang" from (presumably) a post some where), near the middle-just back a tad, of the police car, just a sort of special effect, or is it part of Vancouver permanent street furniture in metal. I'd really like to know.
Thank you, if anyone knows. This is very important to me.

It's rather large and stylized.
This could indicate that city planners have passed the "utilitarian only" stage in that part of downtown and the street lighting there, and are focussing more on image and style.
Nice to see some aesthetic evolution in the downtown street furniture.

Aren't they two different chains?

Same owner, apparently. And same concept, right down to the same kind of bread sold.

Now all we need for competition would either be France's Delifrance or South Korea's Tous le Jours to enter the local market.

Sounds like they are different from this article about some lawsuits in Korea.

Rotiboy and PappaRoti, the top two bread chains selling the popular coffee-flavored sweet bun, are tangled up in a bitter mix of lawsuits with their disgruntled local franchise operators.

The foreign brands have been running businesses here for nearly two years now and while sales are climbing up, relations with their Korean partners are turning sour over similar problems.

Hong Kong-based PappaRoti, which currently operates almost 100 domestic franchises, is in a legal battle with two dozen of its former franchise owners who claim that the parent firm provided them with sub-quality ingredients.

According to industry sources, they filed a joint lawsuit demanding PappaRoti repay the initial costs totaling nearly 500 million won to set up their businesses.

However, the bread company fired right back, denying there was any problem with the ingredients, claiming that the franchise operators are only trying to find a justification for prematurely breaking the original contract period.

A group of former PappaRoti franchise owners have launched a new brand called Bun & Fun.

``The legal battle with our previous partners is taking a hit on our brand image, but the court ruling will hopefully untangle the problem,'' said a PappaRoti spokeswoman. The court is set to issue a ruling on Thursday.

Facing similar problems regarding contracts, PappaRoti's competitor Rotiboy is currently dealing with five lawsuits.

The Malaysia-based firm has filed three charges against its former franchise operators, while the other two have been filed against the parent company.

The biggest problem is the overuse of Rotiboy's trademark.

A group of Rotiboy's previous franchise partners have started up a new brand called ``Caf? Roti,'' while using the interior concept and supplies that were provided by Rotiboy.

Company officials say that such action is an infringement of intellectual property rights.

``It is wrong for the former owners to use Rotiboy's concept if they are running their business under a completely different name,'' said a company spokeswoman, who stressed that consumers can be easily confused.

The firm's ex-partners, however, are arguing that Rotiboy's misled management guidelines forced them to cancel their contracts with the parent company.

``It is feared that the ongoing legal mess may scare away prospective franchise operators,'' said a Rotiboy official, who added that the court is expected to issue a ruling sometime soon.

Last March I took the Helijet in from Victoria and got a great view of the city. Only problem is I ended up on the wrong side of the helicopter to see downtown. However, I did get some cool pictures of the suburbs.
