Beautiful pics Delirium. What's the concert/festival going on in that first pic?

The "fountain" is part of the City's system of high-pressure salt water fire mains. The city installed a backup system of earthquake resistant water mains throughout the downtown core and, I think, along the main arterials of the city. There are a number of pumping stations that draw on salt water from the ocean and drive them through the system at much higher pressure than normal. That "fountain" was the system being opened and purged, perhaps for ceremonial purposes in light of the Jazz Fest.

this is robson street, on the left

SFUVancouver
Mar 2, 2007, 4:43 AM
The strip of low rises on the south side of Robson is critical to the vibrancy of the street because it allows ample sunlight to reach the sidewalks at all hours of the day throughout the year, even as the sun tracks lower in the winter sky. It is important to note for out-of-towners that Robson is Vancouver's premier high-end shopping street. (Picture Rodeo Drive in LA or 5th Avenue in NYC)

If there were a wall of high rises the streetscape would lose a lot of the "openness" that make it a pleasent place to be. It doesn't feel like you are in a caynon because you aren't. At the same time I think there are a lot of options to increase density along the street without resorting to high rises. 3 to 5 storey buildings with a healthy setback from the property line would be just fine. There are great examples of this on Robson around Nicola and Cardero streets. Two or three floors of apartments, many with fantastic decks and patios, are set back from the over-height retail/commercial/restaurant at grade.

it used to have even smaller buildings and even some old houses back in the early 90's

the street to the right is a laneway or back alley a good way to avoid the crowded street when needing to get somewhere

Such as this one @ Nicola (the entire 5th floor on the front is a huge common area deck):

This has been mentioned elsewhere in the forum but...
Robson is no Rodeo Drive or 5th Avenue. Robson's lower quality shops and the older streetscape (no special sidewalk treatment or special light fixtures, etc.), as well as the ever-present bums and trash make it have more of a "seedy" feel to me anyway.

They should think about widening (by 2X or 3X) the sidewalks on Robson, or even making a pedestrian only street for a few blocks. At least on weekends (for pedestrian only). I don't think the stores along there would need to worry about lost business. It would allow for more foot traffic. At the moment, it seems the capacity of the sidewalks have met it's limit. I'm sure some people, myself included, are turned off of going there because of this. Of course, an argument against that... is there are never enough car lanes to get through downtown. But then there's the global warming thingy...

Overground
Mar 3, 2007, 2:22 AM
I'm for widening Robson a bit because right now if I'm going from point A to point B I take either alley or Alberni St to get to where I'm going. Trying to manoeuvre around people on Robson feels like being an F1 driver dodging backmarkers.

Vancouver is surreal, I suspect people who live there often look at a building and say I have never seen that one before, even though it may be 30 + stories high. Such a notable skyline, probably top 5 in the world. Looks great in every type of weather as well.

Now that's funny. I wonder how much you could produce if you converted an entire condo tower, including parking levels, into an enourmous grow-op? That would sure pay off the mortgage quickly. Mortgage helper indeed.

Though BC Hydro might grow suspicous when you draw more power than a concert at GM place on a daily basis. That and all the residents driving Porsches and crazy stretch hummers that burn whale oil.

Great pics as usual Delirium (whether they're yours or were found). You always manage to come up with more and more great ones. That pic with the helicopter is pretty sweet. The skyline looks great in it too, especially with the addition of the Melville. I also like that pic of False Creek. Makes me wish I was at Granville Island right now.

i hate to rag on other cities - but i was looking at the pic threads for another city in Canada and really the pics were nice but they were so generic and could have been any north american city

vancouver may be bland and monotone to some people but its definately got an identity and is easy to distinguish

I have two questions which were inspired by this photo. First of all, how the heck did the person get the hammock on the sculpture? Second, I assume that this sculpture is part of the sculpture exhibit and will thus be removed any day now? It is such a shame that that exhibit got us accustomed to seeing these beautiful sculptures around town only to have to endure seeing them go after their sale. :(
