Last week I was in Vancouver and I found a nice place to view the downtown skyline, just west of Commercial Dr.

Great show Dylan. I'm hurting my brain trying to estimate where you took that from. I'm going to guess that it was on the grounds of Brittania school. Am I right?


I just checked in Google Maps' new 3D view and here's what I came up with. It's pretty crude and cropped from a much larger image but it matches up with your shot almost exactly and I took it from the southwest corner of the Brittania School running track.

Yes, it was from the field of a school, so that could be the one. It's a really good angle of the skyline we don't see around here very often.

Crazy-ass sun shower rolled in this evening. This was taken from my balcony and when I took this I knew that the Canucks scored their first goal from the cheering I could hear outside, hehe

cool - i hear there is a big rainbow tonight

todays weather was cool - the north shore was all grey and dark and the south was all sunny with great fluffy white clouds and blue sky - the light was amazing around 3 pm

Ha! As I was scrolling through the pics and saw the starfish clinging to the rocks, I really started to miss Van - especially now that it's spring there. And then I remembered a seagull eating one just before I saw your next pic, Locked In, and boom! Nice combo. Thanks for the memories everyone. Oh, and my brother refers to those flying fortresses as, "shithawks"!

I think they were just plastic, but the box wasn't filled with them, they were just spilling out. The display is already gone!

Two questions about the last post... What are the top windows for or were for on the sears building? Is that floor even used anymore? and where is the last picture?

the last picture is on the 7th floor of the bay - its the home to ralph lauren furniture - I believe it used to be the restaurant many years ago

as for sears - I think the store is 4 floors with the 6th floor being the sears outlet and than the 5th & 7th floor closed off to the public and just sit empty according to a friend who worked there - I haven't been up inside the store in a long time - but i seem to recall when you go to the outlet level you go past a boarded up level

It's a fantastic book, one I've been meaning to buy. Of course, I would have bought it already if my pictures that were supposed to be in it actually made it in. :rolleyes:
Oh well, I'll have to make my own book, I guess.

Vancouverites filled Commercial Drive today for Italian Day, which this year occurred less than 24 hours after more than 70,000 people were in the streets downtown to celebrate the Canucks win in game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final. It's been quite the weekend for street parties!

some pics of gastown for trofihn - sorry i can't figure out how to spell your name without looking at it ;) I noticed walking around hastings near woodwards and save-on-meats the derelict and homeless etc are outnumbered by regular folk and tourists, scenesters, hipsters, trendsters etc. kinda weird and was not on edge at all like would normally feel when walking down there

In your Gastown photo series, I can see a subtle upmarket trend visible, regarding the refurbishment of a building, to a "tonier" look to some passages etc. I wonder if Gastown will ever gain the critical mass to become another Yorkville? Of course, in Yorkville, it's mid-town and far from poverty's edge, so I doubt it, and of course Toronto is a much larger market.

Thanks for the pics. This Gastown Courtyard is a real mistake, even moreso today than it was when it was first built (early 80s?). I can kind of get what they were trying to do (ground floor), but it was poorly executed. I don't get the upper floors and what sort of architectural considerations they put into that.

That complex, plus the empty former Museum of Vancouver create a void zone along Water right now.

Nice autumn photos! The weather was beautiful this past weekend.

Nothing you guys haven't seen before, but, I was testing out my new Fuji X100 :P It has amazing dynamic range for a small camera, and extremely saturated colours. Of course, having no zoom and being forced to shoot at a 35mm equivalent can be troublesome if you're used to zoom cameras, but some times a challenge is nice :haha:

I posted these on the Canadian skyline section but it seems that if your photo or post is not about Toronto (or a lesser degree Montreal and Calgary) it will be ignored, haha, so here they are:

Here is a suburban splash from the rarely seen Brentwood and Holdom skylines (which will likely in the future becoming one) of Burnaby.

Again this is how much Burnaby amazes me as a suburb is it doesn't have just the Metrotown skyline, but these two as well (and actually the Lougheed one too)

The Brentwood skyline is a hard one to find vantage points clear of trees and powerlines with good lighting, but I think I may have done just that. You can see the M-line skytrain line snaking through it if you look hard enough. Two more towers are currently u/c in Brentwood and you can see one of the cranes slightly in these pictures amongst the towers.

Interesting pictures, Metro! Would it be possible to get some shots of the Lougheed Town Centre? It looks spectacular when approaching from the west on Highway 1 through the wooded Central Burnaby valley park, and "baf" the buildings suddenly appear!!

Have they added any in recent years, or has it remained more or less as it was five years ago? Love to see it, if & when you have time. Thanks. :tup:

This is the best pic I could find. They are actually really prominent being the tallest buildings in the area (I think the tallest building is 38 stories). At night those glass lanterns light up for a subtle but classy effect.

Awesome pics btw Metro! I eventually want to do a compilation of all of Vancouver's many suburban skylines and post an epic thread. I think even Toronto forumers would be shocked by the amount of density we have outside the CBD.

So there's a tower at Lougheed 38 floors tall? Whew!! I'd like to say that I think your idea of a suburban skyline thread is great! Please, please go for it.

Actually that has been my plan for a long time to do a super Metro-Vancouver skyline photo thread.

Lougheed is one on my list I still need to do, as is New West (done a few but need some good density shots) and West Van.

Metrotown is done to death, I finally feel I have done Brentwood justice, have a few of Coquitlam.

there were also two towers built on the coquitlam side in the last 5 years but they aren't that tall maybe 12-15 storeys - but they are on high enough ground that they add to the skyline coming from the east or south

there are plans for more on the coquitlam side i expect to see them go up soon this area is changing rapidly with expectation of evergreen line - already numerous houses have been demolished with denser townhouses and low rise condos taking their place - the area around burquitlam plaza especially is seeing a whole bunch of projects on the go right now

I dodged my responsibilities today to snap these pics. I tried to get a New West skyline shot, but even on the Queensburough bridge it doesn't work out. One set of trees in the mid ground finally get out of the way just for another set in the foreground to get in the way, haha. At least I got some decent walking in.

Anyways here is what i got of New West. I will post them in the Canada section as well where I am sure they will get buried quickly by endless Toronto posts.

I made a thread called "suburban downtowns" on skyscrapercity canada a long time ago, with a bunch of pictures, so I already know how it'll go down...
