I live in Vancouver's Commercial Drive neighbourhood, which is one of our most eclectic, and I took some photos today of the local part of my daily commute. I did this photo tour late morning at around 11am.

A few steps into my commute takes me from my apartment to Commercial Drive. I'm close enough to be seconds away from the shops, bank, grocery store, etc., but far enough away that there is no road noise.

The City installed a couple of dozen new bike racks this past week along my part of Commercial Drive. They are the single "hitching post" type bike racks that can handle a couple of bikes without taking up too much sidewalk space, which is appreciated for parts of the city with narrow sidewalks like much of Commercial Drive. The ones in front of Prado are usually claimed by fixies and vintage road bikes, sure signs that hipsters lurk within.

This is a classic Commercial Drive shot of a coffee shop, market, parked bicycle with a child seat, old shabby apartment buildings, and a SkyTrain crossing Commercial Drive on its way to downtown. The train in the photo is one of our new Bombardier Mk2.5 SkyTrain cars, part of the 30% fleet expansion we took delivery of for the Olympics.

By contrast here is a train composed of original Bombardier Mk1 cars. The two trains were about 90 seconds apart, which is normal for SkyTrain during much of the day.

Commercial Drive is also pretty much ground zero for wannabe-anarchist lefties. These next two posters were plastered all along The Drive earlier in the day. They will probably be torn down or covered up in a day or two. The basic thrust of 99% of the posters is that business is bad, the government is bad, war is bad, marches are good, the police are always bad, criminals are always innocent unless they are middle- to upper-income white men, nobody should not do anything anywhere since everything everywhere was once First Nations' land, and lastly the government with the support of businesses and most white people are fighting a war against immigrants, people of colour, First Nations and especially women. Plus the Olympics is the worst thing to happen to anybody anywhere, ever, times a million!

I am arriving at the Commercial-Broadway Station precinct. The overhead line leads to downtown, which is about 5 minutes down the line from the station. The station is also the terminus of the 99 B-Line, which I believe is North America's most successful bus route with about 80,000 daily passengers. This route is slated to be replaced by rapid transit, hopefully an extension of SkyTrain, near the end of the decade.

One of our new electric trolleys. The bus route along Commercial Drive uses articulated trolleys exclusively and is usually packed in both directions during most hours of the day.

Well it was a busy train so I put my camera away at that point. That's my walk from home to the SkyTrain. It takes about 5 to 7 minutes and then the train is just shy of 10 minutes since I go to the last stop. Altogether my commute is about 25 minutes in length.

Great pix all. Is the wind turbine actually rotating yet?

I enjoyed the tour of Commercial Drive, but I have to say that - unlike some other neighbourhoods - photos (any photos) really don't do that area justice. It has to be experienced in person, because it is one of the most vibrant and authentic places in the city limits. Great pix regardless.

The Games are in less than 3 weeks, and so far I have to say I'm quite disappointed with both the quantity and quality of decorations we have...and all of those street banners should be up by now, they should have started installation in December.

I agree. I'm not a big fan of the rings on the barge from what I've seen in photos, maybe I'll change my mind when I get there for the games. I thought the bridge-mounted rings in Sydney looked really sharp and was hoping Van could do something similar because it certainly has a couple attractive bridges. Unfortunately the angles don't pan out. But like you said, why not a second set on the Burrard?

Yes, I've been in Downtown several times this past week...it's still not even close to the same extent we've seen at previous Olympic cities. Not to mention, everything should be up by now but it's not...

Having sponsors do decor is one thing, but the actual VANOC Olympic brand is another and that's what I'm most interested in...

Compared to Salt Lake City, from pictures I have seen, Vancouver doesn't quite match up to the number of building wraps that they had. It seems like there is a lot of nervous energy regarding the snow at Cypress. I think the Look of the Games budget having been cut has contributed to some of this. It will all be a frenzy of excitement by the time the Flame arrives in Greater Vancouver. Monday in Langley! I can't wait.

Yeah, you can see some here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/debaird/sets/6141/

Looks like theirs were partly sponsored by the organizing committee (see logo and lack of massive advertising slogans) - so in our case, VANOC cut the budget because of the recession. It would have been nice to see the "look of the Games" on the towers downtown.

The effect of the tens of million dollar that were cut last year from the 'look of the games' budget is certainly observable now. With that said, I am downtown every day and it certainly feels to me like there is activity brewing. Go to Robson Square and tell me that there is no evidence of the Games, try to say the same if you venture towards BC and GM Place(s), certainly the convention centre.

Frankly it would have been awesome to have a dozen towers done up with look of the games building wraps but it will undoubtably feel like there is a lot going on where it counts, at street level, once the pedestrian streets are in affect, not to mention when the giant search lights start streaking across English Bay.

Let's not forget that VANOC made the budget cuts, which affected a whole lot more than the decorating budget, in the midst of the worst of the recession. They still had not plugged the major sponsor holes that have since been filled, nor had they received a major payment from the IOC that was going to be used for cashflow leading up to the games. In the end I don't think anyone is going to especially care whether we have two buildings with Olympic wrap or a dozen. I'm just thrilled that the city is FINALLY getting public information panels with maps. Hallelujah!

^ the excitement/feel of the Games is certainly growing, but it's not where it should be. The OCOG's expenditures on the Look of the Games contribute significantly to the Olympic experience.

So far, I'd say it's feeling very tame. Huge murals of the Look of the Games on buildings is something I was really looking forward to...the designers did an incredible job with the graphic design, but it's not being showed off the way it should be. I'm very disappointed.

As part of a national campaign promoting McDonald's restaurants, a downtown Vancouver lamppost became part of an out-of-home optical illusion, appearing to pour coffee into a giant cup on the sidewalk. At the time, McDonald's was giving away free small cups of its brew for a two-week period, in an effort to attract new breakfast customers. They developed the concept for a lamppost near 6th Avenue and Cambie Street. The post was wrapped in brown vinyl to resemble poured coffee, while an oversized carafe was attached to the end.

endlessly traversed landscapes (http://www.vancouver2010.com/more-2010-information/cultural-festivals-and-events/event-listings/endlessly-traversed-landscapes_131958LU.html)

Endlessly Traversed Landscapes is a public poster project curated by Natalie Doonan, featuring works by Canadian artists placed in various locations throughout Vancouver. Appropriating advertising spaces such as billboards and bus shelters, these images enter into a dialogue with their surroundings. Billboards are highly contested and competitive zones, displaying the drama of shifting social relations, and bus shelters are transitory sites – outposts that speak to the movement of people through a brief moment in time. Surprising and arresting, these images draw attention to the myriad functions of public space.

When:
Friday, 1/22/2010 to Sunday, 3/21/2010

Where:
Various billboards, bus shelters, Canada Line platforms and trains in and around Vancouver.

Ticket Type:
Free (no reservations required)
