I don't think I've ever seen the ocean freeze in Vancouver. Crazy weather out there.
There is a bright side to all of this. The pine beetle is taking some serious losses in the mountains right now.

I put up some snow pics in the Canada section but you can see all of mine on my flickr site as I just don't have the time to post them. I'm preparing to go back home to Calgary for the holidays and I'll be driving though the mountains tomorrow. Should be an interesting drive.
I saw what looked like ice forming in False Creek this morning. I didn't think that happened here. Crazy. Too bad I'll miss Van's white Christmas but Calgary will certainly be white and much colder. Ugh.

Here's one we've heard before regarding the current cold weather impact on the Mountain Pine Beetle....too little, too late. Staffan Lindgren, of the University of Northern B-C in Prince George says, the beetle larvae have already produced their natural anti-freeze, making them less susceptible to the cold. He adds, while temperatures around Prince George, like here in the Peace, have been below minus 30 in recent days, most beetle larvae can withstand minus-40 degrees for short periods.

Not to mention that the pine beetle is now widespread in the much warmer southern interior valleys (the Thompson, Fraser Canyon and Okanagan) where it will never get below -40. Even a temp below -30 is rare and if it does occur (such as this year in a few spots) it only lasts a couple hours.

Actually while we are off topic about the pine beetle, i do want to shed a little more light on this topic. The idea that the pine beetle problem has been created entirely from the fact that the winters are no longer as cold as they use to be is incorrect. while warmer winters has definitely helped their population increase on the higher elevations, it does not explain why they are more common now in the lower elevations that have always been 10 or more degrees warmer in the winter. The answer to this question is human controlled fire suppression. The dry pine and fir forests of the interior of BC are suppose to burn periodically. Before people were here during the summer season fires would be ignited by lighting and would burn, sometimes for months, until the fall rains returned. Pine beetles traditionally targeted old and dying trees. These old and dying trees would be burned up during the forest fire season, killing the pine beetles inside. These fires would also clear many of the smaller pine saplings keeping the ground clear and adding nutrients to the soil. Hence todays pine forests are unnaturally crowded, causing more competition for light, therefore weakening the average tree, leaving it more susceptible to pine beetle infestation. Occasional controlled burns done by the forest service are nothing compared to natural forest fires. Yes there are more forest fire stats today because of man but all of these fires (man made and natural) are doused so quickly that the area of forest burned today compared to the past in miniscule. Blaming global warming is the quick easy target for everything today, but many problems, such as the pine beetle, have many more layers than simply "warmer temperatures."

fires are natures way of controlling things - man wants to control nature - and well when they do that nature changes/adapts

It's a rare sight. Count yourself lucky. We all should, to be able to live in a city with some wildlife left, it's amazing actually. I count my blessings every time I see a blue heron thriving in our fair city knowing that they aren't doing great anywhere else.

I can tell you exactly where the beavers and anything else are. In biol 432 (i think) with Dr. Darren Irwin, students do a field survey of flora and fauna of plots in Pacific Spirit Park and some students during our year found a dam. There's so much life in Pac Spirit, it's amazing.

If you want to see raccoons all you need to do is hang around UBC at night. On average I see a raccoon (or a family of raccoons) once every 1-2 weeks there. I also come across the odd skunk from time to time. Those things freak me out. I'm always nervous I'm going to run into one while jogging at night and get sprayed, especially since a former roommate once told me they can spray as far as a school bus in distance. I'm not sure if that's true or not but I make sure to keep my distance regardless.

I remember doing the same field trip you just mentioned and also being surprised about the beavers in there, and then maybe a year later I saw a beaver running along the sand and swimming in the ocean at Wreck Beach! It was a pretty random and awesome sight. I think that's the only time I've ever seen a beaver in the wild. I've seen a few beaver damns though. There was one last spring at Blackie Spit in South Surrey/Crescent Beach which surprised me.

I'm not entirely sure where you mean by the "bottom middle left hand side" but that pool and the beach just above it is Kitsilano ("Kits") Beach. Essentially the whole area in the bottom half of the picture is the neighbourhood of Kitsilano ("Kits").

The shore below the pool is fronted by expensive houses and pocket parks (which are part of the Kits neighbourhood). It's mostly rocky and there isn't much there at high tide. From my experience it's open to the public but I'm not so sure if it has a name. It isn't exactly Jericho Beach (not the main stretch anyways). There really isn't much of a beach there for it to be called anything beach. It's really just a meager stretch of shoreline connecting Jericho and Kits Beaches. The water it fronts is English Bay. Hope this helps. :shrug:

lol, I used to see raccoons all the time in my backyard until the city had everyone to use standardize garbage cans for the new garbage trucks. Those cans are raccoon proof, and I haven't seen them around in my backyard ever since. Right after we started using the new garbage cans, the racoons started showing up in the middle of the day - i would think that they were starving and getting really desperate.

The most epic of all raccoon visits to my backyard would have to be the morning of the day Vancouver won the 2010 Olympics. A whole family of raccoons, if I remember correctly around 8 of them in various sizes, going through my garbage. It was rather momentus, and I took it as a sign that Vancouver would win. :D

As for the beaver dam, unfortunately I didn't see any beavers....just one huge massive dam and a flooded forest. It's pretty cool that they live so close to the city....

There's a path along there (the bottom of ecstaticist's pic) that I think runs from the north end of Trafalgar street to Kits beach. Really cool to do as the sun is setting, but I wouldn't let it get too dark...

This shot is taken from North Vancouver at the Lonsdale Quay Market. Vancouver is a lot like Seattle but way bigger, much more diverse, and has a more metropolitan feel.

It is one of the few places outside of Seattle that I could live.

I always find it so interesting when people don't know the population stats but say Vancouver is bigger than Seattle based on appearances (ok, I know the city of Vancouver is technically bigger than the city of Seattle but you know what I mean).

I've had similar experiences with Seattlites coming to Vancouver and thinking it's a larger city. When I tell them that their metro area has over a million more people they don't believe me. It's weird.

I have always felt that compared to American cities Metro-Vancouver in general feels like it is twice its population. Also, do remember that American metro areas seem to stretch to areas that we would not consider part of the metro population. For example, Seattle's metro population includes Tacoma and other areas very far away and detached from Seattle itself. If Vancouver were in America it's metro popuation probably would also include the entire Fraser Valley to Hope, Squamish, Nanaimo and Greater Victoria (no joke!). So in the end Metro Vancouver's true size is probably very similar to "true" Metro Seattle's size.

Downtown Vancouver is way bigger than downtown Seattle. There is really nothing in downtown Seattle of much interest other than the Space Needle. The city life is quite blah compared to Vancouver.

Hey Crazy, what exactly is your beef with Seattle. You always have to comment on how you don't think Seattle is anything compared to Vancouver. Vancouver is a very physically attractive city but I guaratee you there is a million more cultural opportunities in Seattle. Just the Space Needle huh.. what about the Pike Place Market, you know the one that Granville market is modeled after. Oh yeah and the EMP, the Seattle Art Museum, the shopping that so many Vancoverites seem to enjoy every weekend. Please and don't even get me started on the music scene comparisons, P.S.-some real nice photos here.

That's a nice aerial shot. Downtown Vancouver really is quite dense. Are they going to build out east (towards DTES?)?

Someone took an unwaranted and frankly incorrect shot at Seattle... they are just defending their city. Im sure we would do the same in their position.

And Metro, if you find seattle boring maybe you should spend more time downtown and not at the "depressing sprawl outlet malls". Seattle's downtown is usually quite busy with quite a bit of bustle and noise almost any day of the year. There are a ton of cool restaurants, bars, jazz lounges etc that make the city a great place to visit or live.

Also how does our film industry make this a better/more vibrant place to live?

I agree with you Leftcoaster. I used to hate on Seattle until I actually spent some time downtown last summer and was able to get a feel for the place. It was vibrant and interesting even on a Sunday morning, especially Pike Place Market. I would definitely go back and spend even more time there.

:previous: I personally just don't find Seattle entertaining, and yes i have spent time in the downtown area, which does feel rather small to me. Not to say there are not beautiful parts to it, and i would agree that they have a better music scene, but as i said before that is not my scene. And actually having major film productions can add a great vibe to a city, you would agree if you have ever been invited to a full scale production party ;)

But if someone from Seattle does not like what someone on a Vancouver forum said about it then they don't have to come belittle Vancouver. We can all have our own opinions and to me Seattle is boring. Not everyone has to like Seattle. The same way not everyone has to like Vancouver, or Toronto, or Osaka, or Paris etc...

And saying its downtown is smaller than Van's is not trying to be provoking, it is just a geographical fact.

And it is also true that the majority of Canadians who cross the border here are only going to the outlet malls, which i find depressing (hence why i have only been to them twice in my life).

So why does everyone here have their panties in knot?

Again, why is it wrong for me to have an opinion that i personally find Seattle boring? I *personally* have more fun in Edmonton, Reno, and Portland than i do in Seattle. My ex-girlfriend lived in Tacoma, so trust me, i have been to Seattle many times.

I have to say that I like Seattle :) I enjoyed my time there when I went down there. It's a very beautiful place. Is downtown Vancouver "denser" - yeah, I think it is. There's a lot to do down in Seattle, some very interesting places, and lots of places to just hang out. Vancouver and Seattle both have their pros and cons, and I enjoy both cities. I love Vancouver, because well, this is where I'm from, and I love my city, but I'm not going to belittle Seattle, simply because I'm a Vancouverite.

Seattle's a great place, and there're lots of great things about the city (the Mariners - well, at least when they were winning, the Pike Place Market (that such a neat area. I think the first Starbucks store is there!). I'm planning on going down to Seattle with some friends in a few weeks time, so it'll be good to go down there again. I love the new(er) Premier Outlet malls, 'cause I can get some pretty good deals down there. Is it sprawl? Yeah, it is, but that doesn't hinder me and my friends from going down there and enjoying our time there. I think Seattle has a lot of potential still (Corporately, they are much MUCH stronger than Vancouver) to densify, and they will given time.

^ yeah.. i agree. two reasons for me. 1 because it shows mostly our commercial business district and few condos and 2, goes to show that we don't need mountains to have a nice looking skyline. also, the new Georgia tower is going to fill in that gap on the left really well.
