So here it is folks. After 35 months almost to the day Austin finally got some snow, albeit a small amount, only 1 inch.

Unfortunately the whole storm system killed 3 people in the Austin area. On Sunday we had 7 1/2 inches of rain in 5 hours and there was a tornado that destroyed 30 police cars and ripped the roof off a building down in San Marcos. A woman drowned in a creek in Downtown Austin. They had to do atleast 10 high water rescues in the city. 2 other people died in a SUV when it was pinned by two 18-wheelers on I-35 just south of Austin. There were also 7,500 people without power due to lines being broken by ice covered tree limbs and there were about 300 accidents because of the ice. When it was all said and done we had gotten 7 1/2 inches of rain in my neighborhood, 1 inch of snow and a half inch of ice. And we had 23 inch icicles hanging off the roof. Today was the first day we've been above freezing since Sunday night.

 Snow & ice, baby!

Thanks. It was cool actually. We don't get to see this kind of weather very often in Austin, so it's interesting and fun actually. Today all the snow and most of the ice is gone. The icicles are just about gone, too.

I almost forgot these. This is the field behind our house. The snow made for a pretty scene back there.

Come on sammyk, we were looking for an excuse not to go to work. You NJ boys are getting us back to work too soon.

Sweet!!! photos!!! I especially like the ice in the first few, and the pellets bouncing off the van. Some camera you must have there Kevin.

Great shots! I didnt venture too far out of my house before I fell flat on my ass. Thats right, South Texans don't know how to walk on ice, and we put our groin muscles in imminent danger every step we take.

It looks like you had more snow accumulation that we did in Williamson County. I'll share some of my photos soon.

That was a wild storm. Luckily, our neighbors are also in school and with UT, TX State and St. Eds. all closed; we did what any right-minded group of college kids should do: we had a ton of fun.

And this is after we spent over ten minutes scraping the windshield with a CD, an old debit card, a Frisbee and an HEB cup. It’s quite deceiving, how much ice was really on this car and what shows up in the pic.

Thanks, guys. I enjoyed the storm. It's not every year we have one of these, so when it comes along it's a lot of fun. It didn't snow much here, maybe only an hour or so. At one point the flakes were nice and fluffly, but the rest was pretty slushy. The snow did stick because of the layer of existing ice, but it was already gone the next day. And amazingly I didn't fall on my ass. Our driveway and all our walkways are paved with old bricks from downtown which seem to be good at not icing up. Now the wooden landscape timbers, that's a different story, those things are as slippery as snot!

Darn, I missed these photos when you first posted them and now they're "bandwidth exceeded." Hopefully they'll show up soon.

That ice storm certainly was quite the event. Go figure that morning I was scheduled to fly out of Houston to Halifax. I ended up sitting in the plane on the ground for over 3 hours before we finally were able to depart (deicing takes too long!).

The ice storms can be doozies around here. The worst I've ever seen was in January 1997, which made the recent one look mild.

I wonder how many forumers remember December 1983? The whole mid section of the country was frozen. In Austin we were below freezing for two solid weeks, with temperatures rarely above 20 degrees even during the day. Pools froze over, pipes broke everywhere, and they were ice skating on Bachman lake in Dallas. It was a bit much.

Other winters are mild and sunny. Depends a lot on whether we're having El Nino or El Nina. This winter has been cold and gray with only a few nice days.
