This is it. It now stands tall on its own. Better than the renderings with just the antenna. The essence is still there.

Anybody see the movie Oblivion? In a flashback the completed WTC is shown from the Empire State Building's 86th floor observation deck. This is in 2017, the same year a war left the planet in ruins.
Sixty years later, the Empire State Building is buried up to it's 86th floor. You should be able to see the WTC buildings, but you can't, meaning that they got destroyed in 2017, right when the complex was newly open.
Anybody find this a little depressing? I know adding the ruins of the WTC would've cost more money and time, but still. Wouldn't it be cool to see the ruins of the towers in a movie?

Oh yes I noticed that too. I was surprised because the WTC was not visible, however it is taller than the ESB.
But, you know, 9/11 is a "censored topic" in Hollywood so it's not allowed to mention a new destruction of the WTC. As you saw in Avengers, we never see the new WTC being destroyed by the aliens. And a new destruction-movie in NY wouldn't show anything related to the WTC

So was the steel beacon added after they removed the radome? Or was it supposed to be above the radome anyway?

No, it was supposed to be clad with radome material.
The original design was a metal open lattice structure. It was later replaced with the radome conept due to fears that the open spire would allow the internal components to be damaged. They then scrapped the covering altogether.

I believe, and someone correct me if I am wrong, that the beacon was always going to look the way it does. After all, they didn't really redesign anything, they just subtracted the radome covering and put up the structural parts that they had already construed in Canada. This makes sense when you look at the shape of the beacon; it looks like a cap to a wider structure that isn't there.

Yeah, but if you look at the whole conversation, this was clearly not what he meant by original spire design. He meant the radome covered version and incorrectly though the covering was planned to be steel.

The funny thing is, is that 1WTC will probably outlive 90% of the towers in NYC because of its ridiculous strength of construction. 1WTC is the strongest building yet built by human hands, using the strongest concrete, the strongest iron, fireproofing, over-engineering of architectural weak points, etc. The Empire State Building is flimsy by comparison.

Calling the Titanic unsinkable?
I highly doubt that the new buildings will exist as long as the Empire State Building. It's due to the fact that the site that it's standing on will guarantee that it will be attacked by terrorists. The World Trade Center is one of the places in the world that terrorists want to destroy, and there is nothing really out there that will be able to prevent another 9/11 or car bombing unless if we destroy terrorism..........

You didn't seem to grasp what I had written, though. This building is not something that can be destroyed by any amount of car bombs or even jetliners. It has been overbuilt to the point that no act of terrorism like we have seen before can bring it down. Of course I don't want to oversell it like the titanic, a nuclear attack by another nation would certainly put an end to the building, but this is a matter that would be far worse for everybody not in 1WTC, rather than inside of the building (especially the sealed core). The ESB was built with speed in mind, and is a building that is actually vulnerable to some form of attack.

The beacon and the design of the radome spire are pretty much the same. It's the material that's different. That always seems to get lost.

"The beacon and the design of the radome spire are pretty much the same. It's the material that's different. That always seems to get lost."
That's what I was saying.
The original (not lattice, that is going to far back) design called for a radome covering but a steel beacon. The current beacon shows the design elements, but not the materials that the rest of the antenna would have been clad in. This is a very simple concept but I guess things need to be spelled out.
We got the beacon part as it was always designed. We didn't get the radome cladding. There, I hope everyone gets it now.

I don't think there's any such guarantee. 9/11 was the result of a very organized plot that took advantage of an obscure vulnerability. That vulnerability doesn't exist anymore and the rebuilt 1 WTC is the most well-reinforced high rise on Earth.
I'm not saying that terrorists are reasonable people, but their motivation isn't hatred of buildings or inanimate objects. It's to influence political situations through news headlines and societal disruption, and to come across as powerful. Since it's common knowledge that the WTC is being re-built to withstand a terrorist attack, I think it makes it much safer from being targeted in the first place since there's such a high likelihood that the attack would fail. Let alone the fact that all currently-known forms of terrorism are prevented from getting access to the building or defended against by mechanisms built into the building itself.
1 WTC is probably one of the safest buildings in the world to be in, and it's impossible to know how long it will really last but pretty easy to say it will be there 100 years from now.

There's a reason it's the most expensive office building on the planet.
But folks, unless you're part of a terrorists organization (and please let us know now so we can alert the proper authorities), no one knows for sure who or what or even if anything
will be attacked. So please leave that convo for somewhere else. We're here to discuss the construction of this building, or to agree or disagree on its appearance.

Council on Tall Buildings weighs 1 WTC's height claim
September 5, 2013
By WILLIAM MURPHY
Developers of 1 World Trade Center, formerly called the Freedom Tower, say that at 1,776 feet it will be the tallest office tower in the Western Hemisphere.
That claim is being considered by the authority of such matters -- the Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. The group's Height Committee will convene in early November and hopes to make an announcement by Nov. 9, spokesman Daniel Safarik said.

Fencing at WTC coming down, adding accessibility
September 5, 2013
By WILLIAM MURPHY
Construction of 1 WTC, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, is to be finished on the northwest corner early next year, according to the Port Authority. The fencing at that corner will be removed soon after, and much of the fencing along the northern end of the property will come down when the Transportation Hub opens in 2015 and the temporary entrance to the PATH commuter trains is closed.
Most of the exterior work on 1 WTC is finished, including a 408-foot radio spire bolted to the roof in May. Interior finishing will continue into next year before the first tenant, Condé Nast, moves in, according to the Port Authority.

The Construction Elevators will go as soon as the internal elevator systems can take over all the materials and people transporting.
They removed the entire west side construction elevator several months ago. Also the 2 people cabs on the south side of the east Construction Elevator were removed a few months back. This indicates to me that they already have some elevator capacity inside the core, or that they don't have as many construction workers ascending and descending the tower now.

The down side of having the CTBUH vote in favor of the 1,776 height is that the building might end up on this new list, if one is created for the Western Hemisphere:

Well the lights as I understand it from the renderings after the construction lights are removed won't be blue at all. Also they could end up lighting the entire building at night because the building is a 'green' or 'eco' building meaning something or other blah blah blah no energy wasted to run it?
I have one question though which I've never asked on here. Is there a 13th floor included in this building or is the 104th floor the 105th floor?

I feel you but the building won't look as attractive, this why I believe the building is going to look like the picture by night ...Its like the Empire State Building not having half it's LED's. You might be right though because in old renderings with the old spire, this section wasn't lit. But that's with the old spire it's completely different now.

Once the building is completely done and tenants move in etc, it will be lit just like any other office building at night.

Ground zero tower not yet nation's tallest
One World Trade Center's 1,776-foot measure could get trimmed on technicalities
Blair Kamin
September 10, 2013
For years now, it has seemed a foregone conclusion that One World Trade Center, the skyscraper that has arisen on the site of the destroyed twin towers in lower Manhattan, would rise to a symbolic height of 1,776 feet and dethrone Chicago's Willis Tower as the nation's tallest building. But with the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks approaching Wednesday, new twists in the arcane game of measuring skyscraper height have raised the unlikely — and, for some, unthinkable — possibility that One World Trade Center won't be No. 1 and that Willis would retain the coveted titles of the tallest building in the U.S. and the Western Hemisphere.
The widely recognized arbiter of skyscraper bragging rights, the Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, will consider in November whether to knock more than 400 feet off One World Trade Center's official height, owing to a technical distinction between spires and antennas.
Such a call would disrupt the carefully calibrated symbolism, envisioned by ground zero master planner Daniel Libeskind, of a tower rising to 1,776 feet — a reference to the year the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence and an expression of American resolve in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.
.....Yet even if the council's height committee rules in One World Trade Center's favor, another technicality could upset the tower's appeal to national pride. Four years ago, the council revised its rules to state that a skyscraper's height is measured from the lowest significant, open-air pedestrian entrance to the building's top.
Because One World Trade has a secondary, north-facing entrance that is five feet lower than its main, south-facing entrance, the tower's height in feet could be 1,781. That hardly has the same patriotic ring as 1,776, though it would recognize the year of the decisive Revolutionary War battle at Yorktown.
"The issue is not just about the height of the building. It's about the base of the building," said Antony Wood, the council's executive director.
...."Eliminating this integral part of the building's design and leaving an exposed antenna and equipment is unfortunate," the architect, David Childs of the New York office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), said in a widely disseminated statement. Because the council, a private nonprofit association based at the Illinois Institute of Technology, relies heavily on architects' descriptions of their skyscrapers, Childs' statement appeared to lend credence to the view that One World Trade Center's mast could no longer be considered a spire.
"No one outside our organization has picked up on the subtlety of that," said Wood, the tall building council's executive director. SOM on Monday backed off Childs' earlier statement, saying in an email "there is no doubt in our minds" that the mast atop One World Trade Center qualifies as a spire. But SOM did not explain why the tall buildings council ought to heed its new position, leaving the door open — if only a crack — for the council's height committee to base its decision on Childs' original remarks.
Addressing the issue of the lower secondary entrance, a spokeswoman said SOM's hope is that the design will be grandfathered in because it was unveiled in 2005 — four years before the council made its rule change.
"The 'front door' of (One World Trade Center) — symbolically and practically — is the south entrance," SOM said in its email. "This is the entrance that faces the 9/11 memorial and is, therefore, the most significant entrance to the building from every standpoint."
Ridiculous. An entrance is an entrance. It's not like it's some hidden door out "back".

The superblock at Church & Vesey has been The World Trade Center since it became a superblock, and I couldn't imagine the complex with any other name. The terrorists only destroyed the site's contents, not the site itself, and now new contents are rising.

"Ground zero tower not yet nation's tallest"
What a crock. The height is there just count the damn thing. It's pinnacle is taller than the Willis Tower so technically speaking it's already the nation's tallest. I thought the whole issue would revolve around the whole "antenna" not being an architectural element, therefore, it wouldn't be counted. Now it's because of the North Entrance being lower than El. 311' 2". Such nonsense. The Trump Tower in Chicago was supposed to be 1,362' but ended up being taller because they measured it from the lowest entrance. Certainly the same can be done for this Tower. If they're worried about losing the 1,776' symbolism by the Tower being 1,781' why bother. If they choose not to count it, 1,776' is already out the door. F**k the Chicago Tribune.
