WHatever y'all ssay about the proportion issue re the spantenna, I think the size of it---which is bigger than I actually though it was gonna be--is a pretty decent trade-off for whatever outward gilding was gonna be done.

Yeah. That was a boardwalk. And all that empty space, those were buildings. Then Superstorm Sandy came through and decided that she didn't want those things to be there anymore...

None of those lots were formerly buildings. I'm not aware of any multifamily buildings anywhere that were destroyed or seriously damaged by Sandy.

The boardwalk was obviously destroyed, but is being replaced.

Yeah so one a moderator sees Ron Jeremy's testicle popping out this is gone,
but this has to be the funniest post on this forum in quite a while.:haha:

A post like this is more rare than when Sandy took out half of the power on 1wtc for sandy, may I suggest some screenshots? it's now or never.

Also the building looks great, looks like the cladding will be done by the end of may after all.

The mast gives it more impact and dominance as expected, but I still wish the radome was applied to expand the illusion that 1 WTC was really 1,776 ft. This is going to be Lower Manhattan's peak for a very long time.

According to this news article at least it says it will go up today. Dunno where they're hearing that from though:

They will still need to jump the crane to install the last piece. It's no where near tall enough right now. They're raising windows and other steel up all day long though. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire south-western face isn't complete by the weekend; two weeks at the most.

Also, I think it's interesting that the guy wires are purely decorative as they've built the entire thing without the added support. Maybe it was more crucial with the heavier radome / will be needed once it's covered in antennae?

Good point, I thought the same thing about the guy wires, they might be to steady it in high winds with the extra broad cast weight added to it.

My guess, even though that one NBC news article I posted said it would be raised today, the top will be raised tomorrow. Tomorrow has less wind and no clouds. I want it to happen today cus it's my birthday but I think for them the wind might be a little too high.

Well from what I've seen in this thread if the PA says it's going to do something by a certain date you simply add 3-5 years to that and you have your actual time.

What the hell - they cant even give the courtsey to announce their plans for finishing this thing?....I'm real glad I did not blow off work today to go see the final piece installed, who knows if I should try tommrow either?

I get it with the wind being stronger up high than it is down on the ground but jee wiz guys keep the media in the loop. Just stick it up there and be done with it already. :haha::rolleyes: Maybe they had to reschedule Alica Keys or Richard Simmons or someone else for the ceremony....The big inflatable King Kong is out for repairs...who knows?

WTF?!?! May 8th?!?!? How can they predict the weather will be better a WEEK FROM NOW as opposed to today and tomorrow which look PERFECT? Weather prediction a day out is so much easier to predict than a WEEK out. I thought that was common knowledge? I don't see how this makes any sense at all.

Today the weather is great, tomorrow is even better. You postpone something for rain one day the next logical thing to say for a clear sky day the following day is JUST PUSH IT BACK ONE DAY! IT'S SUCH A SIMPLE CONCEPT. Instead they're now shooting in the dark for May 8th which may or may not have good weather? What happens if the weather is bad on May 8th??? Then let's reschedule it for August 15th I guess?!?! And hope the weather is good on that arbitrary date in the future instead?

ThatOneGuy
May 1, 2013, 12:29 AM
You expected it to be placed one day after they postponed it? Really?

It needs to be raised first and secured on the platform, which takes about a day, then they make sure everything's okay to place it, then preparations for the ceremony have to be made again and only THEN can they put it on top. And knowing the time some pieces stood on the top platform you can't expect it to go quick. Is the crane even ready to put this thing on top?

It's a major media event. Setting aside the logistics of allowing all the extra people onto the site, and the extra notice that would require, you don't think that the world's media and all of the officials who plan to attend would like more than 24 hours notice of the rescheduled date? They were prepared in advance for Monday, but when it was cancelled, they couldn't simply move it to the next day. Members of the media have many different assignments, especially photographers. They don't just sit around waiting for things to happen. They have something lined up for every day. And other important officials are similarly busy with the rest of their lives, and appreciate notice for schedule changes.

'Tallest' building in the West? Symbolic One World Trade Center aspires with spire

http://msnbcmedia3.msn.com/j/streams/2013/April/130430/6C7153486-g-cvr-130430-one-world-trade-center-1210p.streams_desktop_medium.jpg

A. Pawlowski

Once everything is in place, the needle will make One World Trade Center, the gleaming office building in downtown Manhattan constructed to replace the two towers destroyed on 9/11, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey noted in a statement.

Such a designation can be both a tourist draw and a mark of prestige for a destination, said Daniel Safarik, a spokesman for the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

“A tall building is a serious iconic symbol of the aspirations of whoever is constructing it, and that can extend to the developer, the architect, the city in which it’s placed and even the whole country,” Safarik said.

But One World Trade Center’s aspiration to be “the tallest” won’t be official until the council weighs in. The non-profit group has three different methods of measuring skyscrapers, looking either at the height to a building’s architectural top, the highest occupied floor or the height to the tip.

The first method is the most widely used yardstick and the one the council employs to put together its "World's Tallest Buildings” list. A spire usually counts as an architectural top – it’s considered a permanent part of the building, unlike an antenna – but the council has not yet issued an opinion on One World Trade Center because it hasn’t received the final construction drawings, Safarik said.

Once the papers are sent, a “height committee” will make the final determination, he added.

But looking out of his Rector street office window at the World Trade Center construction site, Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat Chairman Timothy Johnson told NBC News that, at present, it "looks like the structural mast of an antenna."

If it accepts the spire as an “architectural top,” One World Trade Center will indeed be considered the highest building in the Western Hemisphere. If not, the new skyscraper would rank third, behind the Willis Tower (formerly called Sears Tower) and the Trump International Hotel & Tower, both in Chicago.

Plus you have to factor in the other construction work scheduled. This whole building has been mostly assembled using a "just in time" supply chain system. The north crane spends all day lifting pieces of the comms ring and/or windows. It's easier to reschedule the last piece of the spire when it'll minimize the disruption to the rest of the scheduled work.

Nice! At least it's on site at the foot of the tower. This thing looks like it should be attached to the Death Star or something, awesome.

The crane looks tall enough from my angle.

We already have the perfect angle to determine if it's high enough:

http://franktko.com/pics/crane.jpg

Because in this picture, the boom is at the angle it will need to be for the last lift and the crane has not jumped since that previous lift. If the last piece is shorter than the last one installed, then maybe. If not, I think the crane needs a jump.

How do those dates sound better to them than tomorrow or May 2nd which is predicted to be sunny and clear?

today is a beautiful day.. i'm telling you it's something political they have to make sure Bloomberg is available along with some PA people and maybe celebrities who knows?

Idon't mean to rain on anyone's parade but I said Fri, I knew this wouldn't be done on mon or whatever, I still believe It's not gonna happen the 8th either, it'll never be 3rd at the rate ST is rising, they won't connect that spire, at least my guess before ST tops out. well it was delayed because of weather!!! they didn't do all those press releases to waste peoples' times. Let's stick to facts here. The way it looks this tower will top out in the next few weeks if not sooner, that's good enough for me considering how long it took for us to get to this point.

The glass on 4 WTC looks so much better than the original pics, it's amazing. 4WTC is really growing on me. I just hope they can get what they need for 3 WTC to keep it going.

I agree on 4, but it's 1WTC in my mind that has the best render-to-real-life makeover on the glass. The boxy base on 3 that juts out is going to be very prominent at the plaza level.

Note how it's from "Business Insider." I wouldn't take stock market tips from this individual ever. Kind of pointless how they picked Monday to do it knowing it was going to rain. Perhaps it is a scheduling thing and people like that dip shit Bloomberg and the media have to be available for this. Well at least the thing will finally top out after 7 years of construction. Seriously, the amount of bitching in this thread needs to stop. I'm sorry the people paying millions of dollars and risking their lives to construct this building are going too slow for you. I bet if you cry a bit more they'll get the message and speed up, just for you.

Yes, the crane has to be guyed in case of strong winds when it is jumped up a few more sections so it can install section 317/318 and then crane has to remain at that height with boom up since it is the aviation marker light till the aviation beacon (red light ) is hooked up and functional, so at least a 24 hr period if not longer.

Is it possible that a shell could be constructed around the antenna to create a radome at some point in the future?

I think it is possible and that is what I am hoping for since the radome is non load baring and the structure being built now is the main structure I dont see why they cant attach a shell to it.
However upon saying that do I think it is likely? No, it is very unlikely since restarting construction and getting the cranes back up will be very costly.

Maybe some time in the very distant future, like when the complex is done and generating enough revenue that they may decide to do something like that.

Well, NYguy posted an article a few days ago that didn't make much waves. Maybe a negative determination from these guys might be enough motivation to put a finishing touch on the spire.

'Tallest' building in the West? Symbolic One World Trade Center aspires with spire

...

^ I don't think either party (Durst or the Port Authority) cares about that.

The final pieces of the spire that will top One World Trade Center — and make it soar to a symbolic 1,776 feet when fully installed — are being raised up to the building's roof.

Edit: Right now! Also remember that this lift will just put it on the temporary staging platform. The installation date isn't set.

I believe they will also install it today. You have all this media coverage there. Why would you make them come back? I believe we will see it topped out before the day is over.
